Riccardo Tisci’s First Burberry Collection Lands at Barneys

Today Barneys unveiled its Burberry takeover at its famed Madison Avenue boutique, as part of the exclusive US release of the Spring ’19 collection. This marks the first collection by Riccardo Tisci, who was appointed creative director of the British label last spring and debuted his vision in September. The immersive in-store experience carries over the designer’s rich heritage, taking cues from the newly renovated London store, which was made over to encourage bespoke experiences.

“Barneys New York is thrilled to be the first to launch Riccardo Tisci’s debut collection for Burberry,” Daniella Vitale, chief executive officer and president of Barneys New York, said in a statement. “We can’t wait for our customers to be the first to experience the new era of Burberry, both in our stores and on Barneys.com later this month.”

The Burberry Spring ’19 is available at Barneys New York and Beverly Hills and will launch online on 2/27. Check out a couple of the looks below.

A Year of Designer Musical Chairs

As the fashion industry continues to evolve from antiquated models, this year saw a significant number of high profile designer switch-ups. Several influential veterans of the industry stepped down from their positions in order to clear the path for the next generation of talent and to help propel these legacy labels into the future. Here are a few of some of the biggest changes we observed.

Virgil Abloh joined Louis Vuitton as Kim Jones moved to Dior

In June, designer Virgil Abloh debuted his vision as the artistic director of Louis Vuitton Men’s Fashion Week in Paris. Originally from Rockford, Illinois, Abloh is a renowned multidisciplinary expert across mediums, who introduced the world to a Wizard-of-Oz-themed LV collection that featured the yellow brick road, huge prints of Judy Garland, and many, many poppies. His personal brand, Off-White c/o Virgil Abloh™ was started in 2012 and still operates from Milan.

Kim Jones joins Dior as Kris Van Ashe departs to Berluti

Only three days after Kim Jones’ friend and mentor Abloh took the runway by storm with his Louis Vuitton men’s collection, Jones presented his first capsule collection after having taken over as artistic director of Dior. He official replaced Kris Van Assche in March, who held the role for eleven years. Led stoically by the KAWS plush teddy bear that took over Instagram just a few months prior, the English designer’s Dior SS19 collection introduced a new take on the mascot with pastel colors, whilst also featuring Prince Nikolai of Denmark as one of the models.

Kris Van Assche joins Berluti to replace Haider Ackermann

In April of this year, Kris Van Assche took over Haider Ackermann‘s role as the artistic director of Berluti, after Ackermann announced the end of his three-season reign just a week prior. Van Assche has yet to present his first collection for Berluti, which will take place in January 2019, when he will present his new take on the French fashion house as head of shoes, leather goods, ready-to-wear and accessories collections.

Clare Waight Keller joins Givenchy as Riccardo Tisci departs to Burberry

As the rotation of the luxury artistic directors continued, Riccardo Tisci vacating the Givenchy throne meant that it was time for British stylist and fashion designer Clare Waight Keller to take the reigns. After working at Chloé for seven years as artistic director, Keller was appointed the artistic director of Givenchy. In May 2018, Keller revealed one of her first designs for the label, a wedding gown and veil for the Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle for her wedding to Prince Harry.

Riccardo Tisci replaces Christopher Bailey at Burberry

Since Riccardo Tisci was appointed to replace Christopher Bailey as the chief creative officer at the English fashion house, Burberry is now officially run by two Italians (Marco Gobbetti took over as chief executive in October 2017). After having stepped down as creative director of Givenchy in 2017, Tisci debuted his new post with the Spring 2019 Burberry collection, which contained several classic Tisci-isms, including sleek tailored outerwear and peppered with Gothic imagery.

Natacha Ramsay-Levi joins Chloé as Clare Waight Keller joins Givenchy

And since Clare Waight Keller’s position was vacated at Chloé, French fashion designer Natacha Ramsay-Levi took the baton in 2017 and made her solo debut with the Spring 2018 collection during Paris Fashion Week. Her debut Chloé line featured the pairing of pastel colors with hearty leather, floral dresses with combat boots, and other juxtapositions of femininity and the reification of fusion.

Hedi Slimane replaces Phoebe Philo at Celine

Though Phoebe Philo designed for Céline (now Celine) for ten years, she graciously stepped down from her tenure as creative director, and Hedi Slimane was announced as her successor. After controversially changing the logo, Slimane introduced the world to his new take on the brand at Paris Fashion Week collection in September, which featured a very 80s-oriented take on new wave and rocker chic. Since Slimane is perhaps most renowned for his work at Yves Saint Laurent, many were disappointed to observe the precipice of Slimane’s government be headed by an all-too-familiar YSL-Slimane style. But there is still time for a turnaround.

Hubert

Hubert de Givenchy, fashion revolutionary and founder of the House of Givenchy in 1952, died on Saturday at the age of 91. The industry mourns the death of the man who single-handedly recreated the fashion facade of the world after World War 2 with his creations for Audrey Hepburn in classic movies including Breakfast at Tiffany’s, Funny Face, and How to Steal a Million.

Longtime friend of Hepburn, Givenchy also worked alongside then unknowns Pierre Balmain and Christian Dior. He further worked for Elsa Schiaparelli and admired Cristobal Balenciaga. Even his successors at his eponymous house included John Galliano, Alexander McQueen, Julien McDonald and the more recent, Riccardo Tisci, have gone on to carve their own legacies. His influence on 20th century fashion and beyond is immeasurable — Givenchy invented the ‘little black dress,’ after all.

Hubert de Givenchy’s work and own style was innovative for the time, yet timeless in the long run. He was the face of Parisian chic, and that’s precisely how the world will remember him.

Nike x Riccardo Tisci Reveal NBA Collab

After leaving his coveted role as Givenchy’s creative director earlier this year, Riccardo Tisci returns to his continuing collaboration with Nike. Following the monochromatic Summer Olympics-inspired line released in July, the pair came together again to design an entirely new collection in partnership with the NBA.  A basketball fan himself, Tisci decided to create his own team name– the “Victorious Minotaurs”– which is printed on various pieces in the collection to establish a cohesive team-theme throughout.  The Italian designer’s signature star symbol can be spotted with the signature colors of the NBA logo, merging the worlds of high-fashion and sportswear together.

The NikeLab x Riccardo Tisci collection is available in North America and online on October 12.

Givenchy 2017 Rottweiler Capsule

Givenchy RottweilerImage: Givenchy.

Givenchy Artistic Director Riccardo Tisci has created many memorable prints—the iconic black monkey, florals, stars—in the past 7 years, focusing on urban masculinity and sensual elegance. First unveiled in Autumn/Winter 2011, the teeth-baring rottweiler image rose in popularity, appearing in every season since and popping up on many of the brand’s signature pieces. For the Spring/Summer 2017 collection, Givenchy goes back to the beginning with an updated motif that captures the mood and inspiration of the original while reinterpreting it in white outlines with a vicious ferocity.

The 2017 Rottweiler capsule will be available in Givenchy stores starting January 2017.

NikeLab x Kim Jones: Packable Sport Style Collection and Video

Next up in NikeLab’s Summer of Sport collaborations–a series of collections leading up to the Rio Olympic Games, including partnerships with Riccardo Tisci and Olivier Rousteing–is Kim JonesPackable Sport Style. Known for being at the forefront of integrating street style into high fashion, the designer’s history moving between the two worlds (he’s currently the Artistic Director of Men’s at Louis Vuitton) allows for a collection completely distinct from his predecessors. The special project is inspired by the ceaseless travel of professional athletes and Jones’s long history with travel himself, documented in a new video from NikeLab. “Travel is a sport,” says Jones in the short film. “I was thinking about flat-packing and how things could be as small as possible.” The designer goes on to demonstrate how the clothes use Nike’s technology to create sportswear that packs easily while still looking stylish, compromising neither functionality nor fashion. The collection boasts a series of clothing and accessories, including Jones’ own sneaker, the Air Zoom LWP, which combines elements of the Zoom 95 and the Air Max 1. The collection mixes punchy neons and crisp neutrals, drawing inspiration from ’80’s sportswear and reinterpreting it with modern sensibilities.

Packable Sport Style will be available on July 23, 2016 online and in select NikeLab stores.

NikeLab x Riccardo Tisci: Training Redefined Collection

NikeLab-x-RT_2Image: NikeLab.

NikeLab and Givenchy Creative Director Riccardo Tisci are teaming up again for a brand new line of activewear: the Training Redefined Collection. Available for purchase today, the line of shorts, tights, tops, and accessories follows a successful relationship between Nike and Tisci—this year’s previous collaboration, the leather black and white Dunk Lux High, and Tisci’s 2014 Air Force 1 collection—and the athletic brand’s capsule with Balmain’s Olivier Rousteing. The clothing sees a similar aesthetic as these previous efforts: sleek and streamlined, with graphic black and white color-ways, a signature of the Parisian designer.

The collection is now available in NikeLab stores and online.
