Essential Homme October/November 2014 Issue Available Globally

05_Oct-Nov-2014

Image: Essential Homme.

Starring musician and style icon Theophilus London—also the first rapper to grace the magazine’s cover—the October/November 2014 issue of Essential Homme treks from fall to winter with the season’s most fundamental wardrobe staples, swelteringly-hot New York Fashion Week happenings, and appetizing holiday options for Him, Her, and the Home.

As always, the book begins with the ten MOST WANTED items of the season (pg. 21), which range from ultra-bouncy adidas by Raf Simons Bunny boots to textured goat leather Maison Martin Margiela wallets, and continues onto CITY LIMITS (pg. 36), an urban exploration of standout outerwear pieces from the likes of Acne Studios, Prada, Dolce&Gabanna, and more. After NEW ARRIVALS (pg. 50, including Alexander Wang x H&M, Calvin Klein Collection’s capsule collection and pop-up space for Dover Street Market, Coach’s first-ever comprehensive line of men’s footwear, etc), the issue sees the first of its two newest verticals, SCENE (pg. 56), a rundown of NYFW’s swankiest shindigs from Jeremy Scott, Emporio Armani, and, of course, Essential Homme.

Selected features include:

  • STYLE (pg. 58): Camel Commotion / Once the go-to outfit for polo players between matches in the ’20s, camel hair comes back this season as versatile as ever, as demonstrated by Ermenegildo Zegna Couture, Louis Vuitton, and Salvatore Ferragamo.

CAMEL COMMOTIONImage: Essential Homme.

  • MEAN AND GREEN (pg. 72): Using Tim Coppens, Gucci, and Raf Simons/Sterling Ruby as examples, muted military greens and industrial-inspired hues fuel the artillery for this season’s most commanding color.
  • BURIED TREASURE (pg. 86): The quest for the perfect timepiece this season results in findings from Hermès, Tissot, and Hamilton as refined as they are rare.
  • GUTS AND GLAMOUR (pg. 92): Jimmy Choo’s Creative Director Sandra Choi jolts the footwear brand fearlessly further into menswear.
  • LONG LIVE DENIM (pg. 96): rag&bone’s two newest collections build on the basics.
  • A HOUSE IN THE HILLS (pg. 100): Atop Beverly Hills’ acclaimed Sheats Goldstein Residence and under the affecting California sun, fall’s medley of formalwear from Roberto Cavalli, Burberry Prorsum, and Michael Kors finds drama despite the cinematic calmness.

HOUSE IN THE HILLSImage: Essential Homme.

  • 2014 Holiday Gift Guide for Him, Her, and the HOME (pg.134).
  • GROOMING (pg. 1142): Taming of the Fuzz / A four-part scruff maintenance round-up for Movember and beyond.

A NEU MANImage: Essential Homme.

A NEU MAN (pg. 114), the issue’s cover story, reveals a spiritual progression for the Trinidadian-born rapper Theophilus London. From Paris Fashion Week with Cara Delevingne to nine months in the desert of Palm Springs, London’s sophomore album, Vibes!, executively produced by Kanye West, is his international, if not intangible, album yet. Closing the October/November 2014 edition, another new column, SHARP SPACES (pg. 144) welcomes Valentino’s new U.S. flagship: a post-modern palazzo in New York City.

The October/November 2014 issue of Essential Homme magazine is available on national and international newsstands and online as of today.

John Galliano Joins Maison Martin Margiela as Creative Director, But What Does That Mean?

v2-john-gallianoGalliano image: EmilyMaree.

At just 7 AM this morning, the internet was already abuzz with the seemingly sudden announcement that John Galliano—the legendary fashion designer who, after leading the house of Christian Dior for just over five years was fired in 2011 after a heavily-publicized anti-semitic controversy—is to be next creative director of fashion dissociative brand Maison Martin Margiela. Perhaps the most provoking of any morning brews, the pairing, though a mouthful of syllables, forms the single most unwavering three-lettered-word burning through the minds of Margiela devotees, fashion academics, and anyone outside of this insular industry right now: why? Why is this happening? Why do we care? Nothing makes sense.

Christian Dior: Paris Fashion Week Haute Couture A/W 2009/10 - RunwayDior image: MyDaily.

Last we left him, Galliano had been working out of Oscar de la Renta’s studio via Anna Wintour, and the three leaders of what can only politely be described “red carpet fashion” hinted a potential permanent position for the deposed designer at ODR HQ. As it seems now, that is no longer the case. Known equally for his dramatically-feminine design as his own saga of personal controversy, Galliano gives himself away as the immediate “which one does not belong” for the Italian brand whose first rule—in really all accounts—has always been silence. When the house’s eponym and founding designer left in 2009, his departure was as spotlighted as much as his profile during his reign… in that it was not. The brand, whose strength has always been in its rule-breaking yet somehow subverted style, often times embracing the distorted and blinding qualities of fashion has never been about flash. Extravagance? Yes. Glamour? Of course. But never ostentatiousness—save for a few H&M and Kanye West-prodded moments as of late. In fact, the leading eye of MMM’s design in recent years—a suggested “collective of minds”—was kept unknown until only this past summer, when Vogue’s Suzy Menkes outted him in an online feature.

MMMMarigela image: Vogue UK.

While it still remains to be rectified if out of ironic or pure persuit, today, hours after the recent announcement, like an oil-saturated meal, the true consequences of this decision are still digesting. In a statement the president of OTB (the group that owns the brand), Renzo Rosso said “Margiela is ready for a new charismatic creative soul. John Galliano is one of the greatest, undisputed talents of all time.” Thereby further destroying the utilitarian ethos and the hopeful idea each season that what Maison Martin Margiela presents upon the runway is just another step on the incline toward progressing fashion further of the brand. Like many conversations, the issue doesn’t evolve from the technologies or manual design in question, but rather the engineer that thought them up in the first place.

A.P.C. x Kanye FW14: You Might As Well Get in Line Now

Kanye

Image: A.P.C.

There are roughly two finger-biting and emotionally exhausting weeks until Kanye West’s second collection for A.P.C. hits sales floors on Thursday, July 17, or what the world will soon come to recognize as Kanye Dependence Day. Last year’s release from the French brand and superstar rapper sold out immediately, and with the amount of anticipation surrounding this one, we’re sure it’ll fly out just as fast.

APC1

Image: A.P.C.

The new A.P.C. x Kanye collection features a range of pieces inspired by the producer-turned-rapper-turned-designer’s personal style, including outerwear, sweaters, t-shirts, and pants. Many of which, such as the green parka and navy bomber jacket, feature faux fur linings, emulating West’s fondness for luxurious material and the “Good Life.” Also of interest is a pair of navy biker-influenced pants. They aren’t Balmain, but they do feature zip pockets and are made of faux suede.

WOABX-H25025_JAC_00

Image: A.P.C.

However, the collection’s most successful items may be its simplest. West often utilizes face coverings in his live performances, and though it isn’t as theatrical as his famed jeweled piece from Maison Martin Margiela, this new wool mask (above) is certainly more functional for the street. A controversy of the collaboration’s previous season, West’s plain white “Hip Hop T-shirt” became infamous last year for selling out despite a $120 price tag. Now another plain white tee will undoubtedly repeat that success—as will its camo counterpart—so ready your credit card if you just need Kanye’s name on your neckline. We know we kind of do.

The A.P.C. x Kanye collection will be available in A.P.C. stores and online starting July 17, 2014.

Collaboration, it’s a lovely thing. When William and Kate came together we got Prince George Alexander Louis of Cambridge, when Jay Z and Kanye teamed up we got Watch The Throne, and when Fauchon partnered with Lacoste, we got éclairs! The list is infinite. Add to it MYKITA HAUS Berlin x Maison Martin Margiela, an intricately made eyewear collection that breathes concept into optic design. “Now seems the right time for Margiela to take the next step by creating an even more distinctive and complete optical range. Edgy, talented and creative, MYKITA’s DNA so perfectly aligns with the Maison’s philosophy,” said MMM CEO and Creative Director, Moritz Krüger.

The ‘Essential’ stainless steel frames — available in 6 styles and 4 colors (silver, gold, copper metallic, and dark grey solid) — come complete with a thick, transparent powder coat that bonds the frames giving them a convex body. Meanwhile, the flashier ‘Dual’ acetate frames ostensibly gives wearers two frames bonded together via mutual transplantation. Take a look:

Céline’s Phoebe Philo wrote a note that read: “Dear Buba Welcome to the world. Look forward to meeting you one day. All my love, Phoebe.”

It’s only the finest for the daughter of Kanye West & Kim Kardashian: North West. Kim is back on social media, proudly boasting her Paris Fashion Week escapades with her husband baby daddy Mr. West. The middle Kardashian is on the prowl to find little baby Nori the best designer clothes for fall, and so she called up some of her friends at Lanvin, Givenchy, Wang, Céline, Margiela, etc. to help her out, cause what are friends really for? Here’s what she’s collected so far.

Lanvin creative director Alber Elbaz sent these looks from the children's collection with a note that read; “Dear North, Welcome to the world. We love you!”

H&M Zeros In On A Isabel Marant For Latest Collab

gene_fiche_hm3_0b965

H&M is collaborating with French designer Isabel Marant.

H&M is collaborating with French designer Isabel Marant.

Last November, Maison Martin Margiela enjoyed a short stint in the hot seat of H&M’s celebrated collaborations before being scooped up to Sold-Outsville. And now, an exhaustive seven months later, word has finally arrived that H&M will keep their French connection alive, welcoming designer Isabel Marant as their next designer collaboration. Often described as “boho” “tomboyish” “rocker” and other variances of “cool,” Marant is a smart, prodigious addition to the H&M collab family. Her collection, which includes Marant’s first dabblings in menswear (and… childrenswear), will be released worldwide in two-hundred and fifty stores on November 14, 2013.

“I am flattered by this collaboration: H&M works with the best designers and this invitation is an exciting honor. I aim at creating something real, that women want to wear in their everyday lives, with a certain carelessness, which I think is very Parisian: you dress up, but do not pay too much attention and still look sexy. The collection is infused with this kind of easiness and attitude. Everything can be mixed following one’s own instincts: my take on fashion is all about personality,” said Marant in a statement from H&M.

The men’s line will be comprised of twenty clothing items and five accessories priced in line with previous designer collaborations, according to an H&M spokeswoman.
