Starting next year, Versace will consolidate its fashion presentations into just two separate coed shows during Milan Fashion Week in February and September.
“This is an experiment that for the moment is limited to 2020. It is a known fact that I like change and experimenting and in a moment in which so many things are changing inside the company, I wanted to modify the way I show the collections as well,” Donatella Versace, the designer’s chief creative officer, said in a statement. “The decision was made to highlight how the collections for men and women are using the same language and aesthetic and that this has been going on for quite a while, hence the decision to use the same moment to show this vision at the same time.”
Versace has previously staged men’s and women’s wear together as recently as last year for its Pre-Fall 2019 collection, making its New York debut in December. Meanwhile, other Italian designers including Gucci and Salvatore Ferragamo have reverted to showing men’s and women’s collections separately, with the aforementioned returning to Milan Men’s Fashion Week in January.
After Gucci announced it would return to Milan for Men’s Fashion Week, Salvatore Ferragamo is following suit. On January 12, the Italian designer will return to the city to stage its Fall/Winter 2020 menswear show following several seasons of coed presentations.
“My journey as Ferragamo’s Creative Director started in Milan four seasons ago and I’m thrilled to return to Italy’s fashion capital with the Autumn/Winter 2020 menswear collection in January,” creative director Paul Andrew said in a statement. “Every new season represents a debut and every debut is marked by creative energy: I think that the city of Milan, with its intellectual vitality and vibrant international soul, is the perfect stage.”
Salvatore Ferragamo is part of a wave of designers that have opted to present men’s and womenswear in one show — others include Gucci, Moschino, and DSquared2, to name a few. But as the industry continues to evolve as a whole, and menswear continues to soar to unprecedented heights, it makes sense that designers would want to give it its own stage.
Paul Andrew‘s first men’s collection for Salvatore Ferragamo Spring/Summer 2020 is a revision of the brand taking inspiration from the Italian designer’s forward thinking and the contemporary age of high-craft and high-tech garments. Staged at Piazza della Signoria, the first show ever set there, the formative entity also celebrates the 30th anniversary of Pitti. With the Palazzo Vecchio and Fountain of Neptune as a backdrop, Ferragamo set a new standard for menswear shows.
The collection itself comprised of pastel loose pieces in lightweight materials that were enhanced by Italian quality and finished in a tender, romantic manner. A mix of traditional menswear staples with more experimental fits, each of the airy pieces came together in a harmony of Earthy hues truly necessary for an Italian summer (ideal for the heat that accompanied the show). Some key pieces include a pair of Nappa leather bonded pants and a range of very-loose knits. The overall impression is a summer take on utilitarian-wear with a bit of Italian flair that evokes a laissez-faire vibe.
Finishing school and entering the workforce means embracing the next chapter of life which typically involves more bills and fewer summers off. Here’s a list of items sure to make the transition from student to regular person is swift and painless.
