Raf Simons is Heading to Prada

Raf Simons has a new gig. Starting on April 2, the Belgian designer will join Prada as a co-creative director alongside Miuccia Prada.

“This partnership, encompassing all creative facets of the Prada label, is born from a deep reciprocal respect and from an open conversation – it is a mutual decision, proposed and determined by both parties,” the Italian brand said in a statement. “It opens a new dialogue, between designers widely acknowledged as two of the most important and influential of today.”

In addition to overseeing his own eponymous line, Simons has also enjoyed stints at Jil Sander and Dior. More recently he was appointed creative director of Calvin Klein, where his contributions to the American brand were met with a mixed response. (Read: people liked the clothes but they weren’t buying them.) He unceremoniously stepped down from the brand at the end of 2018. Since his departure, rumors of where Simons would land next moved circulated throughout the industry.

The combination of Prada’s classic elegance with Simons’ affinity for youth and club culture will no doubt breathe new life into the historic label. The first collection with his co-sign will be presented in September in Milan for Spring 2021.

Frank Ocean is Now the Face of Prada

The lastest move of Frank Ocean’s return to the cultural consciousness (though did he ever really leave?), the artist fronts the latest Prada campaign for its Spring/Summer 2020 collection. The increasingly deified and always enigmatic artist has been laying the groundwork for a proper comeback, beginning with a series of club nights in New York last fall and the release of two singles that were enough to earn him a headlining slot at this year’s Coachella, so an international fashion campaign seems right on the money. Ocean has long been affiliated with the label — he even wore a simple black anorak to the Met Gala, essentially avoiding the theme of the event (which was Camp) and reminding the world that he marches to the beat of his own drum machine. Austin Butler, who had a breakout role in last year’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, and director Nicolas Winding Refn also star in the campaign which hopes to highlight “pivotal cultural personalities of now and archetypes of the hyper fragmented mindset of tomorrow,” according to a statement.

The Prada & Adidas Collab is Finally Here

Earlier this month, Prada and Adidas (Pradidas, if you will) teased an upcoming collaboration on Instagram and sent the internet into a minor frenzy. Little was said about the union of these two powerhouse brands, but additional reports said that the capsule would include two drops with the first happening in December.

With December only a week away, the Prada for Adidas Limited Edition range has finally been revealed. For the first drop, the brands designed a bowling bag and updated version of the Superstar shoe in a clean monochromatic leather palette — subtle yet still absolutely prominent Prada branding decorates the exterior of the classic sneaker style and bag. The pieces will be made in the designer’s native Italy (a fact emphasized with a repeating ‘Made in Italy’ motif that’s printed alongside both label’s respective logos) in an extremely limited batch of 700 pieces.

The Prada x Adidas collection will be available on December 4. Happy hunting!

Prada’s Resort 2020 Campaign is Out Now

A break from the holiday campaign overload, Prada has released its newest campaign for its Resort 2020 collection. Photographed throughout the designer’s native Italy by Keizo Kitajima and Drew Vickers — Kitajima is known for his candid street style shots while Vickers is an internationally recognized portrait photographer — the latest visual series is a “celebration of the preciousness of the everyday, an expression of the style of life, a piece of now,” according to a statement.

Models — Freja Beha Erichsen, Lexi Boling, Sara Blomqvist, Stella Jones, Xiao Wen Ju, Xara Maria, Vik Nahishakiye, Ashley Radjarame, Kyla Ramsay, Toni Smith, Qun Y, Freek Men, and Yang Hao — are shot in portrait mode and then restyled for another shot in the city while — in a kinda meta twist — holding a bouquet wrapped in images from the same campaign.

And throughout the month, images from the campaign will be used to wrap floral arrangements at florists around the world, including Paris, Shanghai, London, Milan, Moscow, New York, and Tokyo. The designer further explains: “As with flowers passed between loved ones, the Prada Resort 2020 campaign is an exchange, a discourse, an open conversation.”

What Exactly Are Adidas and Prada Up to?

In an industry that’s polluted with collabs — the likes of many which are covered right here on Essential Homme — anything is possible. Supreme can get with Baccarat. Nike can get with Carhartt WIP. Virgil Abloh can add quotation marks to an entire line of IKEA furniture. The list goes on. It takes a bit more effort these days to do anything truly shocking in terms of collabs, which is why it’s interesting that a minor internet frenzy was caused yesterday after Adidas and Prada teased and announced their partnership on both their respective Instagrams.

After each brand posted the same image — a Prada shopping bag filled with two Adidas shoeboxes — the hype was only fueled by fan speculation. But despite the cloak of mystery (however mysterious something can be once it’s posted to a combined audience of 46 million), people were quickly able to determine that the forthcoming release was likely a pair of shoes — the shoeboxes in the aforementioned image seem to confirm this. Additionally, WWD confirmed that Prada and Adidas will release two styles in December with plans for a second drop in early 2020. So if you’re not able to secure a pair of coveted Pradidas shoes (see what I did there?) for Christmas, you might be able to use some holiday money to buy them in the new year.

Prada Will Host its Resort 2021 Show in Japan

For its Resort 2021 collection, Prada will show in Japan. While the Italian designer is one of the mainstays during Milan’s own fashion week, it’s now one of the latest designers to travel to Asia to stage its presentation. Back in 2018, Dior presented its first Pre-Fall Men’s collection in Tokyo to critical acclaim. Both Coach and Tommy Hilfiger have staged separate shows in Shanghai. As the fashion industry continues to be consumed on a global scale thanks to streaming and social media, legacy designers are no longer anchored to one place.

Further details and an actual location for the Prada Resort 2021 show will be revealed at a later date.

Walk on Air with Prada Cloudbust Thunder

The iconic silhouette of Prada’s Cloudbust sneaker just got thunderstruck. The new line of Cloudbust Thunder shoes is loaded with volume, thanks to a singular 3D effect achieved by incorporating rubber into the technical fabric of the footwear. Inspired by sportswear, Prada has found a way to give their sneaker unmatched flexibility, softness, and grip. The practicality of the shoe is met by a robust and eye-grabbing design, which combines a classic palette of black, white, scarlet, and blue. A perfect mix of spectacle and streetwear practicality, the Cloudbust Thunder line is sure to make noise wherever it goes.

Prada’s SS ’20 Collection Takes Shanghai

Showing in Shanghai for the first time, Prada‘s Spring/Summer 2020 collection was a retro and playful feast of pastels and ’90s tech. An optimistic spirit was palpable throughout the presentation. The Italian designer’s signature sharp tailoring was more relaxed, with extended fits and a type of deconstructed ease that radiated comfort and elegance. A retro-theme was emphasized quite literally with decorative floppy disks and cassette tapes adorning certain looks — maybe a statement on the obsession with nostalgia? Or more just a metaphor for referencing the past to move into the future. Either way, the collection as a whole was delightfully tongue-in-cheek and clever, demonstrating the type of prizes one finds when thinking outside the box.

The Best Camp Menswear from Mr. Porter

It’s the first Monday of May, which can only mean one thing: the Met Gala. With this year’s theme being something as fun and subjective as ‘Camp,’ it should make for a delightfully tongue-in-cheek red carpet. (Fingers crossed.) For those of us who won’t be attending the benefit tonight, we’ve rounded up some of the best menswear items from Mr. Porter to add a little camp to your everyday look before you go see Camp: Notes on Fashion when it opens on Thursday. Read on.

Prada is Heading to Shanghai for S/S 2020

For Spring/Summer 2020, Prada has announced that it will present its men’s collection in Shanghai this coming June.

“China has always occupied a prominent place in Prada’s imagination: in particular, the city of Shanghai and its rich cultural life. The attitude and identity of Shanghai, its dynamic fusions of past and present, old and new, are sources of constant exchange and interest,” Miuccia Prada said in a statement.

The Italian label joins the growing number of American designers opting to stage their shows in the Chinese capital. Recently, Coach presented its Pre-Fall ’19 show there while Tommy Hilfiger presented its Fall ’19 show there last September.

N°21 is the Latest Designer to Go Co-Ed

Italian designer N°21 is the latest to merge its menswear and womenswear collection into one show. Starting in September for the Spring/Summer 2020 collections, the label will present men’s and women’s looks in one show in Milan.

“A mix of feminine and masculine elements has always represented one of the brand’s style codes,” founder of the brand Alessandro Dell’Acqua said in a statement. “That’s why I feel that presenting the men’s and women’s collections together is perfectly natural, in sync with a creative game plan calling for an ever closer connection between the two.”

As the fashion calendar continues to evolve to keep up with the times, other labels including Gucci, Prada, and Versace, have already launched mixed gender shows. Welcome to the club, N°21!
