6 Artists That Deserve Vegas Residencies

Last week WWD announced that Virgil Abloh would be starting a residency at Wynn Las Vegas this summer (6/29), joining the ranks of Lady Gaga, Christina Aguilera, Bruno Mars, and Janet Jackson who are also dominating the Strip. Now if you’re wondering why Abloh, a part-time DJ, current men’s artistic director at Louis Vuitton, and creative director of Off-White, has a residency, you’re not alone. (I’m a little confused too.) While I don’t doubt his talent in any capacity, I always figured residencies were reserved for more elaborate stage performers rather multi-hyphenate fashion leaders, but this just comes to show how far the evolution of the Vegas show has come. Since the city seems to be drawing in artists in droves, we’ve rounded up some artists who deserve their own residencies in Sin City. Read on.

P!nk

I, like most Australian moms, love Pink. I truly believe she is one of the most talented vocalists of our generation and when she dies you’ll all be sorry. On top of amassing an incredible body of feel-good pop hits over a 20-year career, she’s always performing actual acrobatics in addition to her husky vocal ones (see above). The girl loves to just fly around. Imagine if she had a bigger budget to stage an elaborate Cirque-du-Soleil-style arena pop revue to the soundtrack of some of the greatest mom-rock hits ever? Give her a residency.

The Killers

This one is a little redundant since the band is from Vegas, but I think they’d break the strip if they were given the chance. The band just knows how to do anthemic choruses that throb with a neon glow — nothing drives more straight people to dance floor faster than the opening chords to “Mr. Brightside.” Plus they just know how to put on a show. Give them a residency.

Kylie Minogue

Kylie Minogue is criminally underrated. The Australian pop princess has consistently delivered quality hits and looks across a sequence of eras, from disco to camp to nu-disco to minimal-electronic to yeehaw and back. With a new Greatest Hits collection out tomorrow, Kylie deserves a victory lap in the guise of a stunning high-production Showgirls-meets-Chippendales (listen to ‘Your Disco Needs You’ above and you’ll get what I mean) show in Vegas. Give her a residency.

The Weeknd

For the perfect mix of croony contemporary R&B and Top-40 throwbacks, The Weeknd seems like a perfect candidate for a residency. He surely has the vocal chops to make up for what he lacks in other on-stage histrionics, but given the proper platform I’m positive that the Canadian artist could deliver a captivating show replete with bottle service. Give him a residency.

Lana del Rey

Lana del Rey sings the type of songs that are just begging to be performed while draped over a piano in a sequin gown. Her entire Americana shtick and cinematic style have captivated a global audience that is threaded to her every word, so a minimal show (literally just her, a single spotlight, a piano, and the aforementioned sequin gown) would offer soothing relief to the glitz and commotion of the rest of the city. Give her a residency.

Justin Timberlake

The former N*Sync-er has just the amount of showmanship, talent, and cheese to carry a residency. The versatility to go from sleazy-electro-pop with Timbaland to a No. 1 song for the Trolls soundtrack is something the whole family can enjoy. Give him a residency.

SOPHIE Deserved Higher Billing in the Coachella Lineup

Following rumors of Kanye West dropping out from the festival due to stage design restrictions circulated the web yesterday (Justin Timberlake also reportedly dropped out but life goes on), the lineup for Coachella 2019 was released last night. And with Childish Gambino, Tame Impala, and Ariana Grande all headlining, it’s turning out to be a pretty solid offering. Additionally, Janelle Monae, Diplo, Kacey Musgraves, Solange, Aphex Twin, Virgil Abloh (he’s also a DJ), SOPHIE, Blood Orange, Pusha T, and more are also set to perform over the three-day festival in the desert. Should make for a fun, drug-fuelled tie-dye weekend. My only issue is that SOPHIE should have been given higher billing.

SOPHIE, in case you didn’t know, is the Scottish PC-music wonder turned futuristic pop sensation who released one of the best records of 2018, OIL OF EVERY PEARL’S UN-INSIDES. She’s also worked with Madonna, Charli XCX, and Vince Staples, and is rumored to have contributed extensively to Lady Gaga‘s upcoming album. She’s pretty much the future of pop as we know it and her set at Coachella will be a sure smash. Now I think Childish Gambino is brilliant, Ariana Grande deserves the world, and I like Tame Impala as much as the next guy who still cuffs his jeans, but I just think that our dear SOPHIE deserves higher billing.

Tickets for the festival (April 12-14 & 19-21) go on sale Friday. Check out SOPHIE’s video for ‘It’s Okay to Cry’ below.

Pusha-T and 1800 Tequila Scouted Rising Artists for New Album

On December 7th, 1800 Seconds, a collaborative effort by Pusha-T and 1800 Tequila, finally dropped on all major music platforms. The new album featured songs from up and coming artists from across the country selected by the Pusha, whom he mentored personally.  The project is a new artist discovery and recording platform that gives unsigned artists a chance to write and release one new three-minute track produced and marketed by a record label — the artists involved were Ant White (Philadelphia, PA), Cartel Count Up (Hampton, VA), Don Zio P (Middletown, CT), Hass Irv (Harlem, NY), Monalyse (Detroit, MI), Nita Jonez (Houston, TX), Sam Austins (Detroit, MI), T Got Bank (Brooklyn, NY), Trevor Lanier (Wilmington, NC) and Tyler Thomas (Los Angeles, CA).

The album sessions were held in Los Angeles, at the world-famous Westlake Studios, where Michael Jackson, Aaliyah, and Frank Ocean have recorded some of their hits. Part of the recording process entailed each of the artists working with Pusha-T to refine their songwriting skills, beats, delivery, and bouncing ideas back and forth with the rapper.

“The 1800 Seconds platform is a time for me to connect on an executive and mentor level and push the next generation of creatives in music forward,” Pusha-T said in a statement. “Making it in hip-hop is hard—the only things you can control are the creativity and yourself—and new artists on the rise will strive when they know who they are and what they want. Hip-hop is all about staying connected to culture, being inspired by what’s happening on the streets and translating that to your audience. The new 1800 Seconds compilation does just that.”

1800 Seconds is out now.

Shocker: Lindsay Lohan Has Had Sex with Celebrities!

kanye-wests-donda-recuts-and-scores-new-trailer-for-lindsay-lohan-movie-the-canyons-0

You probably heard that slight ripple in the celebrity gossip continuum yesterday as the always-reputable, always-journalistically virtuous (note: bleak sarcasm) In Touch Weekly reported on its “exclusively obtained” hand-written list of Lindsay Lohan’s alleged celebrity sex partners. And while we most-likely believe every single name on the list—which includes Adam Levine, Max George, Evan Peters, Zac Efron, James Franco, Justin Timberlake, Colin Farrell, Wilmer Valderrama, Garrett Hedlund, Jamie Dornnan, and the late Heath Ledger —we have to question the authenticity of such ridiculousness.

If we were to accept, for a moment, that this list did actually came from the penmanship of the actress herself: who really cares? The anonymous source told In Touch, “They were giggling and talking shit about people in the industry,” as Lohan supposedly scribbled down names at the Beverly Hills Hotel in January of last year. The source continued—they always do—“It was her personal conquest list. She was trying to impress her friends with the list and then tossed it aside.” The source kept going, leaving us with this piece of duh: “This getting out now could rock several Hollywood relationships to the core.”

The takeaway: famous people have sex with famous people and/or In Touch Weekly is strapped for stories.

In Preparation for Tonight, Here is Jimmy Fallon’s 1998 SNL Audition

tumblr_mz7or2DZ0l1rqgazeo2_r1_500

It’s looking like a big week for NBC—a phrase you haven’t heard in the last decade or so—as the network prepares to launch the very first episode of the highly anticipated Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon… tonight, February 17th. Also important to keep in mind that it’s not just a new host, it’s also a new locale as the show returns to New York City after nearly 42 years on the West Coast. “This is where it should be,” Fallon told The New York Times. “It’s electric here. It’s the trendsetting city. It’s the most alive city in the world.”

Starting week one with a strong line up, Will Smith and musical guest U2 are set to inaugurate tonight’s show, and it only gets better from there. Tomorrow will be big, with Jerry Seinfeld, Kristen Wiig, and musical guest Lady Gaga. Wednesday won’t be too shabby with Bradley Cooper and musical guest Tim McGraw. THURSDAY is a thousand times yes: First Lady Michelle Obama, Will Ferrell, and musical guest Arcade Fire. Lastly, Friday comes in a bit predictable (but the good kind of predictable) with Fallon and his bestest pal Justin Timberlake kicking back and swapping stories (as we imagine they do every day off your television sets).

In honor of Jimmy’s first night, we take a look back at the audition (and Adam Sandler impression) that started it all:

Good luck tonight, Jimmy (because he’s reading this).

By now, we’re in the aftermath.

It’s been a little over ten hours and although the something-more-royal-than dust has settled, Queen B is still sitting atop her thrown in full freeze; the stare: icy. So, yes, Beyoncé went and pulled the stuntiest of stunt moves, dropping an entire “visual album” out of thin air after a year of will she/won’t she.

The not-at-all-highly-anticipated-out-of-lack-of-knowing-it-existed album is out today, exclusively on iTunes, and is comprised of 14 songs and 17 videos. Collabs with Jay-Z, Drake, Frank Ocean, and Blue Ivy are spread across the album with a slew of somebody producers including Justin Timberlake, Timbaland, Sia, Pharrell, Miguel, Ryan Tedder, The-Dream, Hit-Boy, etc (and we mean etcetera).

In a statement: “Now people only listen to a few seconds of  song on the iPods and they don’t really invest in the whole experience. It’s all about the single, and the hype. It’s so much that gets between the music and the art and the fans. I felt like, I don’t want anybody to get the message, when my record is coming out. I just want this to come out when it’s ready and from me to my fans.”

On track to decimate, 80,000 copies of the album were sold in the first 3 hours of sale ALONE.

It’s a good day to be alive!

Tom Ford Designed 600 Pieces for Justin Timberlake’s Tour

how-justin-timberlakes-2020-experience-changed-industry-01

The ‘ole “pays to have friends in high places” was evidenced at the Barclays Center last night where Justin Timberlake kicked off his 20/20 Experience World Tour in eight custom-designed Tom Ford outfits. Another whopping 592 — this is not a test — were created for the band, background vocalists, and dancers. Timberlake’s no stranger to rocking the Ford, having been outfitted in his “Suit and Tie” vid, the 20/20 Experience album art, at this year’s Grammy Awards, and at his wedding (him and his groomsman).

“Justin has great personal style and knows what he wants, which makes designing for him an absolute pleasure,” said Ford, “He is a tremendous talent and has a kind of effortless cool that makes classic menswear tailoring modern.”

Justin Timberlake Alexander Wang Summer Legends Tour

Which Fashion Icon Is Joining Justin Timberlake & Jay Z on Tour?

Justin Timberlake Alexander Wang Summer Legends TourYou may add one more icon to the Legends of Summer Tour featuring Justin Timberlake & Jay Z…in the form of a spring/summer ready to wear shirt by Alexander Wang. Wang’s White Nylon Ottoman & Leather Combo short sleeved T-shirt is what JT sported on stage last night in Toronto at the kick off of the tour and what he’ll be wearing throughout the show’s North American tour. Justin as an Alexander Wang man? We like.

The Tie Bar

Catching up with The Tie Bar

The Tie BarHaving become fed up with paying exorbitant prices for ties two Chicago attorneys, Greg & Gina Shugar,  created an e-commerce necktie brand that became a runaway success. That was back in 2004 and they called it The Tie Bar. Nine years later, the e-shop is frequented by the likes of Justin Timberlake, Robert Downey Jr., and Andy Cohen and has expanded to include pocket squares, cufflinks, and socks. But the success wasn’t immediate. At all. Actually…this: “I didn’t understand that woven ties are three dimensional,” says co-founder Greg Shugar,” so when our first collection arrived — six thousand ties in our basement — my wife and I said these are the ugliest things I’ve ever seen.” Opting not to lay down and die, (oh no, not…) they decided to study neckwear design (“which if you’re going to get into the tie business is something you should probably think about early on, but we didn’t.”). And from there? “I started to respect the design process,” Shugar says. Then came the celebs. But it’s not just V.I.P.’s getting the special treatment. Shugar revealed, “One customer tweeted ‘I love your skinny ties, but your tie bars are too long, why don’t you make them shorter?’ and so we did.” It was an enormous hit, becoming a signature of their tie-bar line.”So what’s hot at The Tie Bar for summer? There’s a line of prodigy stripe ties, fringed pocket squares, reversible bow ties, and over one hundred and fifty knit ties to keep you cool all summer long. Traveling far south of the neck, The Tie Bar will be launching a signature collection of twenty-five shoe laces in late June. The laces, available in 30” and 36”, will be priced at a modest $5.

Breese Shorts Justin Timberlake Drake Zac Efron Liam Hemsworth

Something You'll Want for Spring 2013 (That You Can Buy Now): Breese Shorts

Breese Shorts Justin Timberlake Drake Zac Efron Liam HemsworthThere’s a brand new, mostly shorts collection launching for spring 2013 that mens buyers from Scoop to Kitson have all but gobbled up for Spring 2013. It’s called Breese and their schtick is quirky conservatism. What that means are square cut shorts (or mid-thigh, depends on your size) peppered with all-over hunting/military inspired graphics—tanks, rifles, soldiers, native americans and buffalos…and…squirrels and flying pigs. Uh…not sure how those last two fit in, but no matter, the patterns are still pretty cool. So is the selection of colorways which range from lime to mustard to olive and, we’re guessing that’s blood red. Also some solid plaid options. As of now there’s some T’s in the mix and they’re planning to add hoodies and accessories. The designer behind the new label is Tim Breese. The guy recently quit his corporate job to pursue his love of illustration, a career change that his fashion industry wife helped steer into the sartorial direction. Not bad, wifey!  Their people tell us that the cool kids in LA—like Justin Timberlake, Liam Hemsworth, Zac Efron and Drake (or their stylists)—have snatched up some Breese shorts already. Which, interestingly enough, isn’t that hard. Despite being a collection for Spring 2013, they’re already selling them via their website here. (checkout the the selection after the jump)
