Stampd Returns to Tradition for FW18

Stampd FW18 Delivery 16357

The Los Angeles-based streetwear/lifestyle company Stampd has debuted its Fall/Winter 18 collection today. Reverting back to tradition (which, fittingly, is the name of the collection), the brand heavily incorporated silhouettes and design cues from its inaugural collection back in 2011. The building blocks of the designer’s core aesthetic have been repurposed into pieces that show its evolution while acknowledging its roots. It’s also the first release in an ongoing six-month series that will include many drops arriving later this fall. We spoke to Chris Stamp, Stampd’s mastermind, about the latest collection and lifestyle behind the label.

EH: Is there a particular reason you want to bring back early silhouettes this year?
CS: The past few seasons I’ve been lending a lot of creative time to different projects and collaborations while still maintaining creative control over Stampd’s RTW and Lifestyle collections. For fall, I made it a point to set aside time where I could look back on past seasons and see what I loved about certain pieces and what our customer responded most enthusiastically to. There’s so much inspiration in what we’ve done that I wanted to look inward rather than outward for creative direction.

EH: How do you feel about the overwhelming obsession with nostalgia infiltrating fashion and general pop culture?
CS: Design is an art form whether I am shooting a lookbook, designing a collection, or making a surfboard. For me, injecting nostalgia into your collections and designs is a form of self-expression. I choose to work with brands like IKEA and Gap because those brands have meant something to me since I was a kid. Working with companies like that on a global scale really gives you added drive to create something amazing and unique.

EH: Are there any particular influences you find yourself going back to when designing?
CS: I always start with a minimal, monochromatic palette no matter what I’m creating. When you start clean you can always add subtle inspirations, design details, and pops of color as you go along. You can always add more – so start with a clean pallet.

EH: Can you elaborate the lifestyle associated with Stampd?

CS: [It’s a] Heavy West Coast influence. It’s a harmony between luxury, surf and street culture.

EH: What’s the best style advice you’ve ever been given?

CS: Stay consistent and never give up. Each obstacle/experience should be a building block to your future goal. Wear what you love, comfort is key.

LANDLORD Releases Gap Capsule Collection

LANDLORD x GapImage: LANDLORD x Gap.

After reworking its denim line for a more active wearer, Gap partners with LANDLORD, the New York-based brand, to release a capsule collection that celebrates the 2-year-old label’s fashion progression. Following founder Ryohei Kawanishi’s Autumn/Winter 2016 runway, heavily inspired by Gap’s vintage ’90s vibe, the retailer approached the designer to combine its uniformed precision with LANDLORD’s hardened, eccentric vision. The result an oversized dream, the first ever collaboration for Kawanishi, and features the high-flying, khaki-coated vibe portrayed in Gap’s late-millennium campaigns. With both baggy tees and relaxed pants, the capsule cherry-picks from the workwear construct that walked LANDLORD’s Autumn/Winter 2017 runway, though here escaping into more modest territory than previous iterations. By pairing light colors with non-constricting cuts, the collection is a simplified time capsule, bottling up an alternative, evergreen spirit and pouring it over the young label’s modular aesthetic.

The LANDLORD x Gap capsule collection is available now through March 31, 2017, exclusively at the “I am Gap” pop-up store, located at 30-31 Long Acre, Covent Garden, London.

Gap Technical DenimImage: Gap.

After the launch of its high-endurance fitness collection, Gap found itself sitting on the blueprints for breathable, cooling textile-tech. Releasing in three different pant variations—slim 5 pocket, utility, and biker—in both dark and washed palettes, this denim is all about its special features. With a built-in webbing belt, special pocket for your cell phone, and reflective tape interior backing—yes, for safety, but also an interesting pop of added flair—the pants prove that denim doesn’t have to be boring. The pieces’ perfect companion? The new icon jacket, a heritage appeal updated with advanced design. Water repellent and with zippered pockets, not to mention a drop down hem for added length, the piece includes a ventilated back yoke and underarm gussets that rework a once claustrophobic construction into a lightweight breeze. Rounded out by a classic worker shirt, mimicking the jacket’s look but with a more everyday appeal, the line is a working man’s ideal—quality denim that doesn’t put up a fuss.

The Gap Technical Denim collection is available online now.

Gap Taps Street Artists for Latest (RED) Release

Gap (RED)Image: Gap.

Gap extends its longterm partnership with AIDS organization (RED) in a new range of utility coats designed for the charity’s 10th anniversary. Aiming to support World AIDS day on December 1, the clothier taps international street artists to utilize the jackets as their individualized canvas, crafting personal responses to the health crisis and their own visual reaction to the ongoing fight against the threat. From such visionaries as Olek, a Polish-born activist specializing in crochet, to Shiro, a Japanese graffiti artist, the pieces transverse the norm to inherit a space of interpretive structure. While one jacket includes pop-art femininity, from artist AIKO, another, from Kelsey Montague, is an embroidered medium that reinvents geographical patterns, each piece a varying medium to suit the artist’s eye. Together, the line bridges the divide between a quality wardrobe and effective design that echoes a vocal crisis response. All six jackets support the global fund for (RED) and the fight to bring HIV/AIDS support to the world’s suffering countries, following in a long line of Gap’s more moral offerings and building on a partnership 10 years in the making.

The Gap (RED) utility jackets will be available on November 28, 2016.

Gap Collaborates with Bielmann Surfers for Capsule

2016.5.6-GAP-42271Image: Gap.

Gap is back with another partnership, the next in a long line of successful collaborations with names like Keds and Pierre Hardy. This time, the classic American brand is releasing a line of T-shirts that feature the work of Brian and Brent Bielmann, two of the foremost surf photographers in the world. The former is a pioneer in his field with nearly 40 years of experience and the portfolio to match, and his nephew is regarded as a prominent up-and-comer. Their capsule collection with Gap, available for purchase next Monday, May 23, 2016, includes six T-shirts that feature the pair’s dreamy marine photographs.

2016.5.6-GAP-42280-RecoveredImage: Gap.

For Gap’s VP of Men’s Design John Caruso, the choice to collaborate with was a no-brainer for the summer launch: “The Bielmanns capture the spirit of surfing like no other photographer. Their images spark the kind of summer memories that we’re thrilled to celebrate in Gap’s collection of exclusive tees.”

Brian shares a similar sentiment about the relatability of the photos. “I am always amazed by how many people love the ocean. Even people who don’t live anywhere near it are still captivated by the feelings it provokes,” he says. “The thing about surfing is, even if you don’t surf, you look at the images and imagine what its like to live the lifestyle. I don’t think you can say the same about other sports.”

Bridging the GAP Between Art and Fashion

NEVILLE-BRODY---LONDONImage: GAP.

Never before has the union between art and T-shirts looked as intoxicating as GAP‘s 2015 Remix Project. Collaborating with 11 artists from the global art scene—Fantasista Utamaro and Yuka Choco Moo from Tokyo, Lin Zhipeng from Beijing, Candy Bird from Taipei, Loïc Lavenu and Maud Vantours from Paris, Kyle Pierce from San Francisco, Jessica Hische from LA, POSE from Chicago, and Neville Brady and Quentin Jones from London—the project seeks to demonstrate the singular style of each artist, thereby simultaneously celebrating the innovative legacy of GAP. Each limited tee features the idiosyncratic work of each artist that remixes the brand’s classic logo into bold art; the interior of the garment features a small blurb about the project, profile of the artist, and a heat stamp of the artist’s signature.

LIN-ZHIPENG-(223)---BEIJINGImage: GAP.

POSE---CHICAGOImage: GAP.

The launch is a sure way of presenting comprehensive art scene as the eclectic group of artists, some emerging and others well established, encompasses a wide spectrum of art from illustration to photography to tattoo. POSE, an illustrator whose artistic root is grounded on graffiti, designs a T-shirt that is positively unrestrained and chaotic, one that closely parallels his original aesthetic philosophy; while Maud Vantours, a designer who specializes in textiles and materials research, incorporates a carefully patterned field of vivid hues like magnificently spilled paint. Meanwhile, Choco Moo, an artist whose unique style consists of black and white illustrations, presents a totally playful design with cool fonts racing across the T-shirt—try spotting the GAP logo, it will not be easy. The new release is a promising approach to introducing brilliant artists to a wider audience through the humble yet everyday medium of T-shirts—the ultimate common denominator of all.

The exclusive collection of limited-edition graphic tees is available online now.
