Collage Sensation Max Burnstein discusses His Live G-Star Raw Collaboration

maxwell---1Images: Samantha Morales.

Canadian artist Maxwell Burnstein has amassed a significant following since introducing his collages to the world on Instagram, earning praise from the fashion world and audiences alike. We caught up with him before the launch of G-Star Raw’s Elwood X25 denim line, where he created live collages on-site inspired by the dynamic prints of the collection.

EH: I love that you’re able to make your collage process a live experience. Could you explain a little more about the project with G-Star?
G-Star invited me to their 5th Avenue Store in New York City to support the launch of the new G-Star Raw Elwood X25. The FW17 capsule collection from Pharrell Williams reinterpreted the brands classic Elwood jean in 25 prints, inspired by cultural symbolism like Kimono embroidery, animal prints to natural camouflages. The campaign photography will be cut up and collaged with the X25 product line live on-site. Installing the collages as they’re made, patrons can engage in a live art performance and be part of a living exhibit.

EH: Is there anything in particular that drove you to work with G-Star?
I grew up on the G-Star brand, familiar with the innovative product lines and creative initiates. When I was approached with interest in working with them on the Elwood X25 launch, I felt my analog collages would be a natural extension of G-Star Raw’s devotion to craftsmanship and construction.

EH: What is the most challenging part of your process? And the most rewarding?
Cutting photography in an analog process can be time consuming and tedious, limited by the amount I can adapt the paper fibers I use. There is no room for error as every slip is visible, and can often ruin a nearly finished work. The craftsmanship is visible in analog collage which can’t be mimicked digitally. It extends to installations and live art performances, where the physical creation of artwork can still be valued in the age of digital collage.

EH:
Are there any key themes or things you try to incorporate into each collage?

Every artwork is designed to evoke a new feeling, whether showcasing a single piece or collective body, they speak to a larger narrative. Outside of my work in Fashion, my exhibits tend to focus on historical events and figures. These works look to modernize traditional photography and concepts such as my show for the American inauguration Cross the Party Line, or focused on old Hollywood icons in Death of an Icon, which released this past October 2017 at Contra Galleries in New York City.

EH: Who are some designers or fashion figures that have influenced your work?
I draw a loft of influence from my contemporaries in the collage artist’s movement, collectively promoting the value of our work. I have made an effort to build relations with those I see as pushing collage into the mainstream, always trying to promote their efforts alongside my own. This is an emerging industry, where analog and digital collage artists alike are working on a global scale from their respective countries. Supporting your community is part of my practice as an artist from Canada.

EH:
What would be your dream collaboration?
I would like the opportunity to work with leading art galleries and events around the world, from Art Basel in Miami, White Cube Gallery in London, to the Art Gallery of Ontario in my hometown of Toronto. Everyday there is a new opportunity thanks to the countless support I have been receiving with each coming project, making my dreams ever closer.

Pharrell Williams New Co-Owner of G-Star Raw

Image: G-Star RAW.

At a time when leaderships for many fashion brands are rattling, G-Star RAW solidifies its relationship with longtime collaborator Pharrell Williams, naming the musician and entertainment personality co-owner of the denim brand. The announcement follows two years of partnership between Williams’ eco safe textile company Bionic Yarn and the jean-maker in which the two transformed recycled ocean plastics into urban-ready denim, as well as the former’s own experience in fashion, having helmed the streetwear-facing Billionaire Boys Club and Ice Cream with BAPE founder Nigo since 2005. “G-Star is an independently minded and forward thinking company,” said Williams in a statement. “I believe they will be the definitive jeans brand of the 21st century. I am looking forward to be part of that mission and to co-create G-Star RAW’s future.” Williams is set to give the company a creative injection on all levels, from collections, to advertising, and even business strategy.

Before Basel: Listen to DJ Jasmine Solano’s Mix for G-Star and WeTransfer’s Miami Bash

Audio: Jasmine Solano, courtesy of G-Star RAW.

G-Star RAW continues to add fuel to its fire for emerging talent, partnering with WeTransfer for a special event at Art Basel Miami Beach this week with a lot of heat. While the first iteration of Tone To Transfer in NYC last spring showcased an array of Pitchfork-worthy musicians, the upcoming event plays off the art fair’s ethos, spotlighting illustrator and graffiti artist Greg Lamarche and MTV host/DJ to Wiz Khalifa/hottie about town Jasmine Solano. Held at the Brisky Gallery in the Wynwood Art District of the city on 12/2 from 7 – 10 PM, the party also celebrates the 20th anniversary of G-Star’s Elwood denim—a patched-knee, thigh-seemed jean that sits at the core of the brand’s DNA.

As you pre-game for your South Beach shuffle, or—for those like us—sit handcuffed to a desk, we’re bringing Basel to you a little early with an exclusive listen of Solano’s mix. Check it above and then download the track via WeTransfer and enjoy it office or shine.

With substantial streetwear influences and an innovative use of materials emblematic for the collaboration, the collection features a Euro/Japanese streetwear take on American sportswear with unmistakable military and outdoor inspirations. “It is of great importance and interest to me that my work in one industry inspires my work in another industry,” says Newson. ”I am a great believer in the cross-pollination of ideas, processes, materials, and technologies.” Some of the distinctive qualities and product highlights include a baseball jacket made out of durable 14-wale corduroy, re-imagined Chino rebuilt from an archival military tank pant and cut from Japanese-woven denim, and various tops in tech sweat shirting. G-Star RAW’s Autumn/ Winter 2015 Collection will meet all of your style and cold-weather expectations.

What to Wear on World Ocean Day

Water
Image: National Geographic.

When you see a sign that reads “Help the Ocean,” the biggest question that rings in your mind is more than likely how? The alarming degree of marine pollution is no news at this point, and yet, what is to be done at sea is not entirely as crystal clear as, say, with quite some irony, what to be done on land—most ocean pollution begins with us. With such perplexity in mind, the annual World Ocean Day, a United Nations-recognized day to celebrate and take action for the ocean is today, and this year’s theme is “healthy oceans, healthy planet”—simple, straightforward, and absolutely accurate. Whether you are a surfer, swimmer, or even an occasional user of the Boracay’s beautiful white beach wallpaper, here are some wearable and non-wearables ways we can individually sail towards a better and more stylish world.

Six Questions For Afrojack

14187029 Afrojack II_Look_0384

Grammy Award-winning producer/DJ Afrojack teamed up with G-Star to produce a capsule collection back in November of last year. And now, come Spring, come part deux of the collection, set to drop this Thursday (March 27). But first, hold on a moment, we had some burning questions for the international superstar about his experience working with G-Star, his upcoming album ‘Forget The World’ (featuring Wiz Khalifa and Sting), and the most unexpected party city.

Essential Homme: You’re undoubtedly approached by a lot of brands, why did you choose to align yourself with G-Star?

Afrojack: With G-Star, the collaboration process is truly that: we fully share input and ideas. It was fun for me to work with their creative team and have my say on every little detail. The G-Star team is fearless and I like working with a brand that isn’t afraid to be the one doing things differently. Plus, it just made sense to work with a brand who’s clothes I already wore — I was already a fan so it felt like customizing my own wardrobe.

EH: If you had to pick one stand-out piece from the collection, which would they be?

A: I have to say the A-Crotch denim – I just can’t get over how well it fits. I’m excited to have a Summer version now too.

EH: Do you have a particular album or track that you’re most proud of?

A: I’ve spent a very long time perfecting my debut album, which will be released on May 19th, and I think it really represents the message I wanted to get across. ‘Forget The World’ is meant to be a reminder to everyone that you don’t have to listen to peer pressure and negativity from people around you. I think that’s a message everyone needs to be reminded of sometimes.

EH: You’ve been all over the world, what’s your favorite city to party in that people wouldn’t guess?

A: I’ve been to some of the best parties in the world, so it’s hard to choose just one place. Ibiza, of course, has some sick parties that are unlike anything else. But I have to say that Holland — where I’m from — really knows how to throw an unforgettable party. We’ve been doing these kind of massive parties for years; sometimes you just can’t mess with the original.

EH: If you could trade places with any other DJ for a day, who’s it going to be?

A: I’d almost want to trade places with them all for a day — I guess to see what it’s like to walk in each other’s shoes, but Steve Aoki is one of my closest friends in the industry; I’d want to walk around with his hair for a day!

EH: What artist(s) should we be listening to that we’re not (yet!)?

A: My album is full of collaborations with artists that are insanely talented, I think people will be pretty surprised. There will be a few names on there that most people haven’t heard, but I really believe they’re the ones to watch out for.

EH: Thank you much.

The full G-Star RAW x Afrojack collection will be available starting March 27, 2014 online and at G-Star Raw’s Miami store. Happen to be in Miami?  The collection launch will take place at the store tomorrow (3/27)  from 2PM – 4PM. Bonus: the first 250 people (over 21) who buy some of the collection get a ticket to his private party that night. Want on the list (hint: you do): g-star@exposure.net.
