Equinox Launches Ballroom Pride Campaign

The ballroom scene continues to inspire pop culture ever since Madonna introduced the concept to the masses (aka, the mainstream white public) when she said ‘Vogue.’ And for this year’s pride month — the 50th-anniversary celebration since the Stonewall Riots set the gay rights movement in motion — Equinox is celebrating ballroom culture with its ‘Life’s a Ball’ campaign, which stars members of the community including Legendary Veronica Miyake Mugler, Legendary Chyna Prodigy, Legendary Asia Balenciaga, Legendary Tamiyah Miyake Mugler, the Icon Sinia Alaia, the Icon Leiomy Maldonado, and Tati Finesse. The luxury gym partnered with House Lives Matter, a city-based non-profit that benefits members of the ballroom community, for the campaign — for every post that uses the #PoweredbyPride hashtag, Equinox will donate $1 dollar to the cause. In addition to the campaign, Equinox is hosting voguing classes in San Francisco, LA, New York, and Miami throughout June — tickets for the New York class on June 8th are available online now.

Bode Wants You to Customize Your Cords

Runner-up of the 2018 CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund, Bode launched a new line of traditional cord trousers, with a twist, naturally. Emily Bode, the creator of the namesake New York-based label is renowned for her approach to the variety of conceivable textiles, thus often creating exclusive items with an artisanal touch. The initiative aims to revive the classic style, and each pair is custom-made by an in-house artist to reflect the vigorous compilation of your memories, places, symbols, and anything else that can be printed onto a pair of corduroy trousers to make them unique. Remember when everyone would personalize their own jeans in high school by having their friends sign them in Sharpie? This is the next best thing.

The “Senior Cords” trousers are available on Bode’s website and by appointment now.

The 2019 Met Gala Theme is Camp

10costume4-superJumbo

The theme for next year’s exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute is CAMP. Coming to the museum next spring, the exhibition will explore various camp themes, as referenced in Susan Sontag’s 1964 essay ‘Notes on ‘Camp.” Due to the fun and theatrical nature of camp, it should be a good one.

Even better, Gucci will be sponsoring the presentation and camp queen turned A Star is Born star Lady Gaga, Gucci’s creative director Alessandro Michele, former One Direction-er turned rock star Harry Styles, the greatest living athlete Serena Williams, and of course the reigning queen of Conde Nast Anna Wintour have been announced as co-chairs.

The Met Gala will be held on May 6th 2019, and the exhibition, ‘Camp: Notes on Fashion,’ will be on display May 9th – September 8th. You have until then to figure out what ‘camp’ is.

17 Facts About Yves Mathieu

63400016Photo by Ryan Plett

Yves Mathieu has had a breakout year, after leading the Pyer Moss show during NYFW and getting additional coverage from The New York Times and Vogue for his activism. Here’s a quick and intimate look into the life of artist and super role model. From his words to you:

  1. I pronounce the “s” in Yves.
  2. I was named after Yves Saint Laurent.
  3. I was born in Brooklyn, but I grew up in Florida.
  4. I was bullied in school, which is one of the millions of reasons why I’m so outspoken about bullying now.
  5. The things that are most important to me aren’t on the news; they aren’t in the headlines or the magazines. No one is talking about them. Even though I am just one person on Earth, nothing is stopping me talking about these things. So why aren’t you talking about these things? I take it upon myself to bring up these issues and problems whenever I can because I wish that when I was younger there was someone who took the time to do that.
  6. (on tattoos and appearance) Maybe if I’m grabbing their attention by the way that I look they’ll stop and listen to what I have to say.
  7. I dropped out of college, SCAD, where I studied dramatic writing. I had to get four jobs.
  8. I have 1 tattoo.
  9. I found out through rehearsal that I was going to be standing in the front of the Pyer Moss show. That didn’t hit me until afterwards.
  10. My parents know every single thing about me and still love me the same, which is why I love them so much.
  11. To be home and be with my family—I’ll take that over walking in any show any day.
  12. My favorite place to hang out is called the Manny Cantor Center. It’s for senior citizens. I go there and play bingo with them. It’s my favorite part of every week. If I could, I would go there everyday.
  13. I love this gallery called The Hole on Bowery Street. You should go. The light there is amazing.
  14. Something that I struggle with is that I really can’t help everyone. The sad reality is that I can’t. My response to that is to pray about everything because I really don’t know what to do about it sometimes.
  15. I think of myself still as a teenager sometimes. I think I’m 12, but I’m actually 23.
  16. I just love all people.
  17. The fact that I make people feel a certain way let’s me know that I’m doing something right. The fact that people are challenged by me. The fact that I make them uncomfortable is how I know that I’m doing something bigger than myself.

Proof That Anna Wintour Removed Her Sunglasses at The Tonys

anna-wintour_bee-shaffer_tony-awards-2014

Sunday night’s Tony Awards were full of all of the conventional ‘surprises’ that we’ve come to expect from the televised award show. From an appearance by CBS showpony (and one-time rapper) LL Cool J with host Hugh Jackman and T.I. rapping lyrics from The Music Man to an appearance by Adriane Lenox maybe wearing an urn on her head. And who could forget Tony Award-winner Neil Patrick Harris tea-bagging Orlando Bloom and giving Sting a lap dance! Note: both seemed to be enjoying it.

But who was it that was perched behind Tony Award winner Audra McDonald? That lady in the sunglasses? That’d be Anna Wintour. In an act to evade Neil’s death stare (and a potential lap dance) or possibly in the hopes that Lucy Liu (seated two rows ahead) wouldn’t notice her, Ms. Wintour opted to keep her signature black sunglasses on… for the entirety of the award show. Shady lady. Luckily, they were removed for a brief moment (theory: Harris was backstage and Liu was powdering her nose) where Anna gave her signature glare to the photog.

Jonathan Cheban Came for ‘Vogue’ Unsubscriber Sarah Michelle Gellar

_72168034_reuters_sarah

It almost feels tired to be talking about it already/still, and it’s only been three days, but yeah, #WorldsMostTalkedAboutCouple Kim Kardashian and Kanye West finally landed their Vogue cover for the magazine’s April issue. Whether you loved it or hated it, that continues to not really matter, however nothing could stop people from speaking out, including 2014 People’s Choice “Favorite Actress in a New TV Series,” Sarah Michelle Gellar. The actress took her to continuously-bustling Twitter to share her thoughts on the matter:

The little-Tweet-that-could quickly got picked up internationally with headlines like “Sarah Michelle Gellar Slams Vogue Cover Girl Kim Kardashian,” and “Sarah Michelle Gellar Cancels Vogue Subscription.” Kardashian’s best friend Jonathan Cheban, not missing a beat or Tweet, responded directly to Gellar aggressively asking, “Do you matter?”

Gellar, a lady, chose not to respond. Though her legions of loyal fans quickly jumped to her defense, asking the obvious to Cheban, “Do you matter?”

The Ten Most Iconic Photos from Calvin Klein’s Career

"Inventing David Geffen" New York Premiere

Calvin Klein rose from a young, immigrant’s son in the Bronx of New York to a household name and a legacy in American fashion. In honor of the designer’s birthday today (Happy 71, Mr. Klein!) we pay homage to his long lasting and slightly-controversial career with our ten most favorite and iconic photos from the man who changed runway and retail, for better or worse:

  • Untitled-2
    1. Vogue-Featured B&W Bachelor

For its 1975 November issue, American Vogue highlighted the designer's then newly-finished apartment on New York's Upper East Side. His first marriage had ended a year earlier, and in response, Klein enlisted famous contemporary designer Joseph D’Urso to create a black and white industrious bachelor bad for his new, stylishly-single life.

    2. Master of Denim

Although he technically founded cK Calvin Klein Jeans (arguably the first collection of American designer denim) in 1976, it wasn't until 1977—when Klein modified the fit to accentuate both the crotch and buttocks—that his jeans became a must-have fashion item. Here is the designer photographed above with supermodel Janice Dickinson in Vogue Paris of the same year.

  • BrookeSheilds
    3. Supermodel Support

At just 14-years-old Brooke Shields appeared in 1980 in a now-iconic photo campaign and television ad shot by photographer Richard Avedon. In the latter Shields so cooly says, "You want to know what comes between me and my Calvins? Nothing."

  • CK1982
    4. After The Jean, The Underwear

In 1982 US Olympic pole-vaulter Tom Hintanus starred in the campaign for Klein's first underwear collection for men shot by Bruce Weber. The success of both the brand and the image is still widely acknowledged to this day, with the latter having been named one of American Photographer Magazine's “10 Pictures That Changed America.”

    5. Mark and Moss

At the height of the 90's AIDS epidemic, reign of the supermodel, and rule of the jean, Kate Moss starred with Mark Wahlberg—then, still just Marky Mark—in a controversial Calvin Klein campaign titled, “The best protection against AIDS is to keep your Calvins on" shot by Herb Ritts.

  • CKOne
    6. One For All

After finding success with his first two scents, Obsession in 1985 and Eternity in 1988, in 1994 Klein releasef cK One, a citrus aromatic fragrance for both women and men.

  • Fimmel
    7.  Body, Body, Body

In 2001, Australian model and actor Travis Fimmel became the first male in the world to secure a six-figure deal to model exclusively for Calvin Klein for a year. During this time, famed photographed Steven Klein shot Fimmel for a campaign for Calvin Klein body.

  • CKPVH
    8. Buy For Now

Phillips-Van Heusen, the world's largest shirt company and owner of American brands such as Tommy Hilfiger and Izod, purchased Calvin Klein from its founder in 2003, ending Klein's footprint on the American fashion house for at least the time being.

  • Gods Love

    9. Still Keeping Face

Although nominally out of the game, Klein still remained active in both fashion and social circles. Above he is pictured in 2008 with John Demsey, Donna Karan, Anna Wintour and Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg at a gala for New York-based charity God's Love We delivery.

  • CalvinNick
    10.  Work Or Play?

In 2010, Klein became romantically linked to model and adult film star Nick Gruber, although the exact details of their relationship has been highly contested in the media by Gruber earlier this year
