Launched Today: Tommy Hilfiger Surf Shack

Tommy Hilfiger Surf Shack Limited Edition Collection launch release price buy shorts swimshorts trunks chambray blazer lightweight suits lightweight jackets plaid boat shoes deck shoes aviators sunglasses lightweight sweaters style designer

The Limited Edition Tommy Hilfiger Surf Shack collection that drops today is spot on for Summer 2013. The tight 16 piece men’s collection loops back to the golden days of American surf style in the early 1960’s—we’ll say something like simplicity in flippant, beachy bodaciousness, but is hewn out of shapes, colors and styles that follow the elegant thread of today’s modern man. Basically this—Mad Men contemporary chic… at the beach. More after the jump.

The lightweight chambray blazer isn’t just surf— it’s city and it has all the makings of a staple summer piece. Pair it with a T, a white oxford, shorts or chinos (your call), some of the collection’s stellar deck shoe options and/or the collection’s array of colorful aviators (when you’re  feeling like money) and you’re all set. Also in chambray are the waistband and rollable hemlines on the sherbet orange Mahalo Shorts that hit at just the right mark between the knee and the thigh. Short Sleeved oxfords are begging to be worn with them. The cream twill surfboard, all-over, print pant and the lightweight Emerson plaid jacket with rollable sleeves are the impact pieces with the Sundown sweater (really a comfy baja) and the surfboard print swim trunk coming in for the style save whenever summer’s sea air calls for sporty performance.

[nggallery id=273]

And for the real surf aficionados out there, check out the Tommy Hilfiger partnership with the Art Production Fund. They’ve collaborated with five American artists on some pretty rad custom designed surfboards that compliment the collection.

And Now, Some Art: Domingo Zapata 11 Minutes

Domingo Zapata 11 Minutes New York

Domingo Zapata’s prolific career, spanning the past two decades, reads like a luxe laundry list of achievements.  Just take the last few months: His latest mural was permanently displayed in the W South Beach lobby in the same week that a star-studded event at Art Basel Miami revealed his collection “The Love of My Life is in Paris.”  Dial the time-turner back, say, twenty years, and you’ll journey through a career that includes the creation of his signature “Polo” series, heavyweight collectors like Damien Hirst, Johnny Depp, and Carmelo Anthony (not to mention his recent outings with tabloid prodigy LiLo), and — wait for it — co-writing lyrics for a little ditty you’ve certainly booped to called “The Macarena.”  Hunker back down in your fancy new time-turner and press the dial that says ‘Last Week,’ where beauty, sexuality, and power were on display at the opening of his latest collection, “11 Minutes,” inspired by Brazilian writer Paulo’ Coelho’s 2003 novel.  The triggers of human obsession were exhibited throughout the three-story pop-up gallery in Soho — former sight of Tommy Hillfiger’s renowned boutique — at the opening event hosted by Cipriani Downtown.  Translation: Cipriani Bellinis, yes please and thank you!  Guests included actress Jessica White, model Frederique van der Wal, photographer Antoine Verglas, and a slew of Zapata enthusiasts from around the world, who ‘werqed’ their way through images of rhinos, matadors, and kaleidoscopic gypsies.  The show will be on display and open to the public at its current location (376 West Broadway) from now until April 5th, 2013. For more information on Domingo Zapata and his latest exhibitions please visit www.dzapata.com.

Favorite Five: Tommy Hilfiger Fall 2013

Tommy Hilfiger Fall 2013 Menswear runway show presentation collection nutter saville row buy sell purchase

In a word? Thrilling. In more words—Tommy Hilfiger’s Fall 2013 collection is the perfect creative expression of American style combined with British tradition. They’ve named the collection “Saville Row meets Ivy League,” but the totality of the collection is far more exciting than those generally anodyne subjects. Actually, Hilfiger took cues from Tommy Nutter—a one time Saville Row enfant terrible who shook things up a bit during the days of the Beatles and the Stones. The result is one of the most imaginative uses of classic British patterns that have ever walked the New York runway.

Favorite Five

  • YVL_5021.450x675
Who cares if you can't build a bridge form New York to London when you can just line a Prince of Wales check overcoat in some shearling.
  • YVL_5076.450x675
A marvelous play on inside out, Prince of Wales Check makes ample use of it's new found home as lining.
  • YVL_4975.450x675
    Psychedelic in First Class.

  • YVL_5262.450x675
All of the sudden, ever other attempt at remaking this classic jacket looks dull and boring.

Tommy Hilfiger’s done a really good job at keeping a strong, consistent theme in their advertising campaigns—basically a family portrait with a melting pot of beautiful people in all American locations. They affectionally refer to the filial cast as simply, “The Hilfigers,” and the next chapter has just been released, bringing to life the striped, sea-faring theme of the Spring 2013 collection. Says Mr. Hilfiger—“Classic nautical influences were some of the earliest inspirations I incorporated into my designs, so this campaign is very exciting for me. I love the boating life, and this season The Hilfigers are setting sail like only they know how, with all the adventurous spirit and youthful irreverence we’ve come to love and expect.  There’s no better setting to highlight the nautical inspirations, red, white and blue color palette, and heritage prep details of the Spring 2013 Runway Collections.” We agree. They’ve also issued a brief video component set to the tune of Estelle’s, “Do Your Thing,” (can this be a Super Bowl ad, please?) and when Tommy Hilfiger Twitter followers answer the question, “What’s your thing for 2013?” with the hashtag #doyourthing, they will receive a free download of Estelle’s featured track, “Do My Thing.” Free music…beautiful people on boats…stripes….Check the video after the jump and then go tweet your thing!
