It’s Been A Long Week: Ginger #3

As true believers of the work hard, play hard mantra, we present you with It’s Been a Long Week, a weekly column aimed at awarding some liquid appreciation to you for just being yourself, dammit. Make yourself a glass or two, on us — you deserve it.

It is a true pleasure to find a proper new bar in New York that check’s off all our boxes. Upon discovering My Friend Duke, we’ve been enamored by its quite unusual location, the chic aesthetic that it brings to the neighborhood, its open window seats, and the yummy cocktails. With no surprise, the space is the first bar from Lower East Side legend bartender Zachary Pease who previously whizzed up cocktails at Attaboy. We’ve settled for a simple mezcal cocktail with the expected lime and pineapple mix natural to the spirit and a tad of ginger. “I wanted a smoky, semi-sweet and naturally spiced drink.  Can’t stand spicy margaritas or hot sauce drinks so this is my alternative,” says the owner. “Name –  This is a riff on a Riff.  Sasha Petraske did the Ginger cocktail.  One of Sam Ross’s lesser-known cocktails is the Ginger #2 which added grapefruit, I swapped the gin and grapefruit for pineapple, mezcal, and cayenne.” And so, if you’re looking for a non-spicy margarita you’ve found your spot!

Ingredients:

  • .5 oz lime
  • .5 oz pineapple
  • 1 oz ginger
  • 2 oz mezcal
  • cayenne dusting

It’s Been A Long Week: Smoke and Fire Margarita

As true believers of the work hard, play hard mantra, we present you with It’s Been a Long Week, a weekly column aimed at awarding some liquid appreciation to you for just being yourself, dammit. Make yourself a glass or two, on us — you deserve it.

As National Margarita Day approaches tomorrow, it’s quite obvious what we’ll be drinking. Amongst an endless list of tequila’s (Mexico produces close to 1,000 different tequilas,) we’ve settled on a margarita with Milagro Tequila (meaning “miracle”) and Montelobos mezcal. If you’re going to celebrate, you must do it right! As Milagro tequila is aged a bit longer than most others, its distinctive flavor adds an extra punch to a traditional margarita.

Ingredients:

by Camille Austin, National Montelobos Ambassador

  • ¾ part Montelobos Mezcal
  • ¾ part Ancho Reyes Chile Liqueur
  • ¾ part Milagro Silver Tequila
  • 1 part fresh lime juice

The Classic Margarita – A Perfect Drink for Cinco de Mayo

Tequila, lime, and agave – that’s all you need to make a perfect margarita. While there are many ways of making a margarita, including using triple sec, a mix, or throwing it into a blender, the best margarita you’ll ever have has just three simple ingredients.

This classic margarita was revived in San Francisco at Tommy’s Mexican Restaurant, a little hole in the wall place you’d never expect to be the epicenter for one of the best drinks in the world. Behind the bar is Julio Bermejo, one the the ambassadors of Tequila in the US, and the margarita is his calling card.

To make a good margarita, you need good ingredients. The better the tequila you start with, the better your margarita is going to be. It’s important to find a tequila that is made from 100% agave for your margarita. Tequilas labeled “Gold” are usually made from only 50% agave, and the rest is basically rum. Tequilas which make great margaritas include Pueblo Viejo, Don Julio, Siete Leguas, El Tesoro, and Tequila Avion.

A good margarita is all about proportions, so it’s important to carefully measure out each ingredient. Also, fresh lime juice is essential, and it takes almost no time to juice a lime. The difference between fresh lime and bottled lime juice is extremely noticeable.

Here’s the recipe for the best margarita you’ll ever have:

Tommy’s Margarita

2 oz Blanco Tequila (Tequila Avion, Don Julio, or Patron)
1 oz lime juice (must be fresh squeezed)
1 oz agave syrup (diluted 1:1 nectar/water)

Shake and strain over cracked ice (no need to salt the rim).
