Check Out Jil Sander’s Cinematic Spring/Summer ’20 Campaign

For its most recent campaign, Jil Sander took the scenic route. Inspired by various textures and architectural cues from two Italian cities, Sicily and Palermo, the German designer aimed to showcase balance in its Spring/Summer 2020 collection — think masculine and feminine, modern with traditional, and fluid and structured forms. The result is a cinematic-like scrapbook, shot by Olivier Kervern, that chronicles brand creative directors Lucie and Luke Meier’s recent road trip. The result is an abstract and visually stimulating series of images, which sometimes looks like more of a moodboard than an actual campaign, that showcases the pieces against a natural backdrop.

“These photographs are both abstract and sensitive; sharp, delicate, and extremely honest,” the designer said in a statement. “In these environments and buildings, in these portraits, Olivier has captured the emotions we intended. It was a true pleasure working with him.” Later this week, Jil Sander will be honored as a Guest Designer at Pitti Uomo.

Take a look at some of the images from the Jil Sander Spring/Summer 2020 campaign below.

Jil Sander Announces New Creative Directors

Luke and Lucie Meier

Ushering in a new age for the minimalist German brand, Jil Sander names fashion couple Luke and Lucie Meier as its latest creative leads. Filling the position after the departure of Rodolfo Paglialunga just last month, the duo are aiming to bring a more clever feel to the ’60s fashion house. Having served under the label for three years, Paglialunga reinvigorated its DNA through clean campaigns and sharp-cut collections. With Lucie having worked for the likes of Louis Vuitton, Dior, and Balenciaga, and with Luke designing under Supreme before leaving to head his own brand, OAMC, this latest creative endeavor will be the first professional relationship shared between the two. The married couple are poised to debut their premiere collection with Jil Sander in September 2017.

Riccardo Tisci’s Re-imagination of Art-Influence at Givenchy

Givenchy_Show

While the interaction between the worlds of art and fashion is a constant occurrence, the relationship is easy to overlook in today’s retail-dominated world of trend-hopping. Over the last decade, under the lead of Creative Director Riccardo Tisci, the house of Givenchy has continuously worked to pull the designer-stitched wool off of unseen eyes—often juxtaposing images from the deep seas of art history and cultural phenomena atop sleek and contemporary cuts—but it was Tisci’s Men’s Spring/Summer 2015 runway show this past month that particularly re-cultivated the idea with a unique sculpture from Dutch artist Paul Veroude. Building off the spectacle nature of the storied French label, Veroude hung from the ceiling of the arena a dismantled 1964 Reims Cessna F172E airplane, entitled “Exploded Plane,”  which served as the fashion show’s centerpiece.

Givenchy_Plane

Circulating around the installation, the collection featured variations on formalwear in a black and white color palette. Outfits disrupted traditional men’s attire with floral graphics, sleeveless cuts, and a mix of formal with casual. Ties were paired with shorts, bombers were layered over button-downs, and nearly every outfit featured heavy black boots. These isolations mirrored the exploded plane by drawing attention to the individual parts of each look, and the omnipresent boots added an industrial aesthetic that echoed the separation of the suspended machinery.

GivenchySS15

Not to say that this season’s runway show was an independent thought, but rather—a weighty reckoning for the public eye. Tisci himself has history as an appreciator of all art forms and frequently collaborates with the art/design group M/M Paris on like-minded avant-garde projects. A duo consisting of graphic designers and creative geniuses Mathias Augustyniak and Michael Amzalag, M/M is most famous for its artistic collaboration, having worked with musicians (Kanye West, Madonna, Bjork) and fashion designers (Yohji Yamamoto, Jil Sander, Tisci himself). The creative partnership between all three men has resulted in exclusive invitation design for Givenchy shows since Tisci joined the label in 2005—a series of elaborate creations that have become as anticipated as the shows themself—and a printed book, entitled “The Givenchy Files,” featuring works inspired by the designer’s collections. The anthology, like Veroude’s contribution to the Spring/Summer 2015 show, exhibits the symbiotic nature of fashion and the visual arts, transcending consumerism and, instead, emphasizing the oft-forgotten craftsmanship of designer fashion.

Admittedly, Tisci’s work hasn’t always been quite so high-browed. Shall we say that it is a bit ironic that the brand has become famous for those ubiquitous ‘Rottweiler’ sweatshirts and ‘Pervert 17’ t-shirts that have affected consumer culture in less-than-ideal ways? Since their arrival, countless e-commerce stores and St. Marks pop-ups replicated the designs, bombarding the initial boldness into a trend that surely lacked in innovation as much as it did in artistic heritage. Maybe. But Tisci’s offering for SS15 reads as a departure from the designer’s previous menswear, favoring crisp button-downs and combat boots over graphic sweatshirts and chunky high-tops. Perhaps Tisci will persist with this ‘formal’ style, but regardless, his ability to incorporate various art mediums into his collections through it all is refreshing and essential in an industry often unfairly viewed as the embodiment of vapid materialism. By emphasizing the bond between these two worlds, fashion houses can express the notion that their clothes are wearable art, and not simply attractions for the brand-whores. Moreover, Givenchy’s collaboration with Veroude this season provided a new perspective to the idea of a ‘collection display,’ showing that a fashion show could become a multi-dimensional artistic experience.

76 Reasons Dover Street Market NY is Going to be Awesome

dsmnyThere’s not much that can be said about Dover Street Market—or its founder, the reclusive Rei Kawakubo—that hasn’t already been tried to be pulled out like teeth by the sartorial elite. We could count the number of veiled interviews this year alone with our fingers—if we weren’t already rushing to flip through the rare pages—in which Kawakubo allowed for public comment. There was one with Suzy Munkes, a conversation with Style.com Matthew Schneier, a few brief words for System Magazine‘s second issue, and, for the most part, that was it. Bottom line is, she’s very mysterious.

Now, Kawakubo’s New York edition of Dover Street Market, a seven-story, 18,00 square foot store, opens tomorrow (Saturday, December 21) in perhaps one of Manhattan’s least-posh neighborhoods: Murray Hill (the irony!). There is talk of a Louis Vuitton pop-up shop on the first floor, a Parisian-inspired Rose Bakery on the mezzanine (similar to the store’s counterparts in Tokyo and London), and even a DSM x Prada exclusive collection. All of this, though, is just speculation. What we do know is that the store’s epic stock-list has everything from A.P.C. denim for the everyday to Paco Rabanne couture. See the list of the first 76-known brands that the store will carry below (we’re sure they’ll be more), and we’ll be sure to catch you at the opening.

SHOPPING GUIDE: THINGS TO GET FOR NEXT SPRING AT THIS SUMMER'S SALES

RICHARD CHAI BASEBALL SHIRT AT SAKS
Asus

The best/worst thing about fashion in July (other than the completely irresponsible use of too much exposed skin in a look)  is that it brings end of season sales! They’re bad for the constant reminder that summer’s end is near, but good for the excellent discounts it presents the shopper. Especially the savvy one. With that said, here’s the essential guide to shopping for next summer season (that’s 2013)  at this season’s discounted prices. Huh? Impossible? Hardly. After the jump, you’ll find out which styles to eye as the sales unfold, and as an added bonus, links to a few pieces that are already on sale for a bargain.

What to look for:  SUMMER TOP COATS

From Dior Homme to Ermenegildo Zegna, the men’s shows in Paris and Milan displayed a clear penchant for a summer top coat. While this may not be practical for, say, the dead of summer, don’t forget that much of our time is spent in seasonal pergatory—that strange kind of warm, kind of cold area that these lightweight coats are the perfect, stylish anecdote for. Chose something colorful, yellows and blues were both big on the runway, and look for double breasted or 3 button styles, both also big for next season.

Raf Simons Three Button Overcoat
$1575 $549; on sale at barneys.com
PAUL SMITH
Paul Smith Navy Blue Cotton Trench
$554 $334; on sale at farfetch.com

What to look for:  SPORT CHIC

One of the biggest trends for Spring/Summer 2013 will be dressed up winks and nods to athletics. The Olympic after effect? Who knows. What we do know is that Louis Vuitton, Prada and Hermes all presented collections that had clear references to sports. Look for color and softer fits.

RICHARD CHAI BASEBALL SHIRT AT SAKS
Richard Chai Polka-Dot Baseball Shirt
$300 $90; on sale at Saksfithavenue.com
BAND OF OUTSIDERS MEN'S VARISTY JACKET OKI NI
Band of Outsiders Men’s Nylon Varsity Jacket $496 $248; on sale at oki-ni.com

What to look for:  PRINT SHIRTS

Print shirts are a trend—this, you know—and it shows no signs of slowing down anytime soon. The trick to buying one on the sale rack now is to go underground. As in, don’t get that prada shirt you’ve been eyeing all season, instead, shoot for something under the radar that follows the trend but wasn’t blown up all over the place.

Asus
Asos
$53 $36; on sale at asos.com
SURFACE TO AIR PRINT SAKS
Surface to Air
$260 $140; on sale at saksfifthavenue.com

What to look for:  CROPPED BLAZERS

Both Paris and Milan took the blazer up a few notches. Meaning, they cropped them. Double breasted and worn soft and loose, pair it with dark trousers or denim for a fall look and then with white or bright colors again next spring.

JIL SANDER DOUBLE BREASTED BLAZER SOFT TAILORING
Jil Sander Double Breasted Blazer
$1470 $882; on sale at bergdorfgoodman.com
SELECTED CROPPED BLAZER
Selected Double Breated Cropped Blazer
$182 $98; on sale at asos.com

What to look for:  PRINT SUITS

Actually, keep an eye out for light print suits. This category, of all, continues to allude any good sale, yet discount season has just begun. With the warmth that designers, stores and shoppers have shown towards print, its safe to go a bit darker and even a little kookier than normal. If its on sale, why not get something a little daring. Besides, being that its a suit, you can chose to pair each piece sepearately. Below, we’d pair the pants sepeartely with a solid top and likewise, the blazer would be a stand out piece when worn with a slick pair of denim or trousers.

HENRIK VIBSKOV PRINT SUIT FAR FETCH

$647 $421; on sale at farfetch.com

More What to look for:

Some things just aren’t on sale right now but that doesn’t mean they won’t. Other trends we noticed at the London, Milan and Paris shows are….

– Pleated, high waist trousers. This isn’t a look for every guy, but for those of you who like to push the boundaries, there’s bound to be a few like styles hitting a sale rack soon.

– Color. A lot of guys are still a little intimidated by going big and bright but the sale rack can be a great place to experiment.  The big colors of next season, and ones that will also work in fall, are teal and green tea. Try denim if you’re a first timer, or go more bold with a blazer if you’re ready.
