Made exclusively for the massive retailing outlet as part of its BNY Sole Series – past installations with Common Projects and Vans a testament to the ongoing project’s staying power – the new kicks go above and beyond ordinary to bring an unexpected twist on classic New York City motifs. From the materials – vegetable-tanned Vachetta leather for both the exterior and the laces, an uncommon textile in shoes – to the construction, a reworking of the Italian brand’s classic Trident 90 design, the production is a skillful clash of Italian ease-of-style and New York rigidity. Perfect for the tempestuous autumn/winter weather, the pieces wear and patina naturally with use, the leather strengthening and changing to tailor the shoe to each individual’s New York lifestyle. The footwear’s unusual shade, a warm tan, is subjugated by the crosshatch, laser-cut pattern inspired by similar detailing found on New York City manhole covers, creating an inherently visual shoe of realized New York iconography.
