Public School Opens Ralph Lauren-Inspired Exhibit in SoHo

PSNY Lo and Behold image

Earlier this week LO & BEHOLD; A Case Study in Cultural Re-Appropriation, an exhibition curated by Ezra Wine and Public School, opened up in SoHo. The exhibit looks at Polo Ralph Lauren‘s influence on urban culture, which has clear ties to to today’s sneaker and streetwear obsession, and the subculture of collecting pieces from the brand.

The display is an explanation of the groundbreaking presence the Lo-Lifes (two Brooklyn crews, Ralphie’s Kids and Polo U.S.A) had for collecting pieces from Polo. They took clothing made for preppy people and reclaimed them for urban audiences. They seized patronage of the brand, reversed traditional power balances, and used individuals and communities to influence a major brand.

Ralph Lauren celebrated its 50th Anniversary last year, and with a nod to the importance of NYC subculture, collections from the early 90’s have been re-released for the first time. The exhibit is set in 3 different 90’s teenage bedrooms and features over 100 original pieces from Polo Ralph Lauren (circa 1988-1994).

LO & BEHOLD is on display now until November 1st at 3 Howard Street, New York, NY 10013.

NYFW: Backstage Public School Autumn/Winter 2017

NYFW AW17 Image: Christopher Logan.

A rich hometown heritage sprinkled with a light touch of political savvy, Public School had no qualms in over- and under-exposing the body for Autumn/Winter 2017. Cutting free constricted looks while doubling up on layers, the line was a balanced and masculine progression.

Public School Joins CFDA x Cadillac’s Retail Lab

COACH 1941 SS17

The Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) and Cadillac‘s ongoing market training experience Retail Lab enters 2017 with a new designer at the helm of its rigorous selling program. Public School, the free-spirit streetwear brand who recently reinvented New York sports caps, embraces its first ever free-standing selling experience through the collaboration, one that advises and guides new creatives on how to navigate the sometimes tricky world of fashion retail.

Focusing on brand development and market penetration through brick-and-mortar spaces, the brand has set up shop in New York’s famed Cadillac House, transforming the creative safe haven into one of organized chaos—a 1995 Cadillac can be seen crashing through the wall, a stark contrast to the clean elegance of the space yet one that is reflected in the brand’s first drop within the program. As part of a rigorous release schedule—new products will be released every five to 10 days—Public School’s Retail Lab debut is simplistic, yes, but relates to the brand’s first foray into the learning curve, its name misspelled, written backwards, and reflected upside down in a tongue-in-cheek ode to day one of schooling. Driven firmly by its clear vision, the drop sets a hopeful tone for the next three months of training, a metaphorical first dipped toe, hand-in-hand with the philanthropic minds at CFDA, into the restless waters of fashion retail.

Retail Lab is located within Cadillac House at 330 Hudson Street in New York and is open now.

Weekly Instagram Roundup: Prada, Opening Ceremony, and more

This week’s complete social snapshot, distilled for your pleasure.

From the hottest celebrity parties to the regretful morning-after shots, ESSENTIAL HOMME‘s Weekly Instagram Roundup brings all of the hottest designer, model, and trendsetting pics from the week directly to you. After all, no one has time to scroll through anything but the best.

Prada

Prada’s latest video campaign, “Past Forward,” a celeb-studded starrer by director David O. Russell, assembles an all-star cast of elegant women ostensibly running through an airport, before stopping in their tracks at the sight of their masculine counterparts—an homage to long lost loves of old.

Opening Ceremony

Victor Solomon, an artist who creates bejeweled, stained glass basketball backboards, once again collaborated with Opening Ceremony to release a new design, Mono Flow. The luxe backboard will be auctioned off with 100% of proceeds going to Planned Parenthood.

DSQUARED2

On DSQUARED2’s 2017 agenda is a blaze of glitter and color, as shown in its Spring/Summer 2017 menswear pre-collection. This week the brand teased with this glam rock leather jacket, boasting purples that evoke Prince, but a style that suggests Bowie or Mercury.

Jordan Barrett

Nineteen-year-old Aussie male model Jordan Barrett returned to his homeland this week at the Louis Vuitton pop-up store opening in Sydney. Wearing a “Volez Vouguez Voyagez” shirt from the brand’s Autumn/Winter 2016 collection, he rubbed shoulders with Kim Jones, Louis Vuitton’s men’s artistic director.

Public School

Public School debuted a capsule collection of glutinous popularity, dubbed PSNY Pizza. The range is a light-hearted departure from the brand’s more ostentatiously brooding Spring/Summer 2016 campaign.

Dolce&Gabbana

It was a big week for Dolce & Gabbana, celebrating Stefano Gabbana’s 54th birthday and launching a new winter campaign for its Light Blue fragrance. Brand-favorite David Gandy reprised his role as the face of the campaign, this time posing in the Italian Alps.

Public School x New Era Redesign New York Baseball Hats

Public School x New EraImage: Public School x New Era.

Quintessential New York insignia—the Yankees and Mets logos—are re-imagined in the latest collaboration between Public School and New Era. For the first time in Major League Baseball history, the designers were given access to restyle the teams’ logos in a new collection of Snapbacks and Dad Caps. The latest design boasts the iconic Yankees and Mets logos superimposed with the Public School WNL and PSNY logos. Both teams are featured in their respective colors, with the Mets in cobalt blue and orange, and the Yankees in navy and white. All hats feature the New Era logo above the ear, and all are lined with the original fit 9FIFTY lining and the “Where NY Lives” Public School subway design. The collaboration honors the New York roots of Public School designers Dao-Yi Chow and Maxwell Osborne, who drew inspiration from the energy transfusion between baseball and the city. “We grew up diehard Yank and Mets fans respectively,” said Dao and Max. “We idolized the players, the teams, but more than anything the logos were unwavering symbols for the city we loved.” Few hats seem quite so distinctively New York.

The Public School x New Era collection will be sold exclusively from September 29th – September 30th at the brands’ pop up shop at 231 Bowery in New York. The hats will also be available for a limited time online.

Rochambeau Wins US Award for the 2016 International Woolmark Prize

Last night, designers Laurence Chandler and Joshua Cooper of Rochambeau were announced as winners of the USA regional finals for this year’s 2016 International Woolmark Prize in New York City. A competition overseen by Public School’s Maxwell Osborne and Dao-Yi Chow, André Leon Talley, Stefano Tonchi, and more, the annual series supports promising fashion talents around the world with a monetary and material grant, allowing winning designers mentorship and to develop a capsule collection in Merino wool. “All of the judges just really connected with [Rochambeau’s] ease and authenticity, and really appreciated that they pushed outside of their comfort zone,” said Chow in a statement. “From an innovation standpoint, working with wool, the fiber, and the silhouettes—it felt like they really took the challenge heads up and tried to do something new.”

Chandler and Cooper join Gabriela Hearst as the women’s finalist, and both brands will compete during Woolmark’s global events during London Collections: Men’s and Women’s Ready-To-Wear Autumn/Winter 2017 respectively, both in January 2017.
