What’s Going On in the ‘Come to Daddy’ Trailer?

These days, it’s best to go into a movie knowing as little about it as possible. With spoiler alerts and the general overdose of information we’re confronted with these days thanks to smartphones, social media, and cryptically judgmental Co-Star notifications, it’s hard to foster any sense of mystery. After it was recommended that I watch the now Academy Award-nominated Parasite without reading too much about it, and being completely shook by the whole viewing experience, I was sold: when it comes to new movies — to (sorta) quote Tame Impala and Rihanna — the less you know the better.

Which brings us to Come to Daddy. Let’s start with what we know about the upcoming horror-comedy flick: Elijah Wood stars as a man with a severe bowl-cut who travels to meet his estranged, eccentric father in a remote cabin by a lake. While that premise is as promising as any premise can hope to be, that’s all we get. In the trailer, it’s clear that Elijah’s life clearly spirals out of control after reconnecting with his dad in ways that range from a little uncomfortable (like walking in on a stranger pooping) to a potential full-on homicide. How’s that for daddy issues?

Come to Daddy hits theaters on February 7. Watch the trailer above.

Get a First Look at ‘A Quiet Place Part II’

Last year’s A Quiet Place, the directorial debut by John Krasinki (aka Jim from The Office) was an unexpected hit. The innovative almost-silent horror film, which chronicles a post-apocalyptic world in the near future that’s been overrun by creatures that hunt by sound, was a commercial and critical success that saw Krasinski star alongside his wife, Emily Blunt. Shortly after the film’s surprise success became apparent, a sequel was announced with Krasinski resuming writing and directing duties and today the first official teaser trailer was released. In the new 30-second clip,  we see the Blunt return with her two children as they seem determined to venture beyond their safety zone and take on the creatures and who knows what else.

A Quiet Place Part II hits theaters on March 20, 2020. Watch the teaser trailer above now.

Watch the New ‘American Horror Story: 1984’ Trailers Now

American Horror Story: 1984, the ninth season of Ryan Murphy’s hit FX series inspired by ’80s slasher films, is coming. While few details of the show have been revealed, the network has been strategically releasing teasers to generate buzz for the series — all feature a masked killer preying upon teenagers at what looks to be a sleepaway camp, which is as solid a premise as it’s ever been. With an all-star cast that includes series regulars Emma Roberts, Cody Fern, and Billie Lourd with new faces like Gus Kenworthy, it looks to be a promising return to form for the series that can sometimes get lost in its own ambition. Stay tuned!

AHS: 1984 premieres on September 18. Watch the latest teasers below.

‘Stranger Things” Andrey Ivchenko Shares His Favorite Things

Last month, Stranger Things made its highly anticipated return with a gripping and satisfying third season. When it premiered back in 2016, the Netflix series was an immediate success that instantly made stars of its young leads and captivating supporting cast, which includes Finn Wolfhard (who’s also in the upcoming It Chapter Two), Millie Bobby Brown, and Dacre Montgomery. (Read our profile on Montgomery from our Spring ’18 issue here.)

In the most recent season, Andrey Ivchenko — a former bodybuilder turned Los Angeles-based actor — dominated the series. Cast as the series Terminator-like antagonist, Ivchenko stole each scene as the Russian Hitman of few words. We caught up with the star to find out a few of his favorite things. Read on.

Favorite movie : The Good, The Bad, & The Ugly

Favorite TV show: “Boardwalk Empire”

Favorite fictional character: Logan

Favorite album: Metallica (1991)

Favorite song: ‘Turn The Page’ by Metalica

Favorite fashion trend: Corduroy jeans

Favorite toy: iPhone

Favorite video game: I don’t play video games so I don’t have one.

Any thoughts on the upcoming Terminator film: I don’t really know what to expect. After Terminator 2, the franchise took so many different directions with introducing so many new and different characters. Now the new Terminator is going in a complete direction from what people are used to seeing with Arnold so it should be really interesting.

‘It Chapter Two’ Will Be 3 Hours Long

After the monstrous success of the 2017 adaptation of Stephen King’s It — it’s currently the highest-grossing horror film of all time — fans can expect the next chapter to be bigger, darker, and longer. Set for release on September 6, the highly anticipated It Chapter Two will clock in at 165 minutes. That’s a lot of clown time.

The sequel features many of the cast from the first film, including Stranger Things’ Finn Wolfhard and former EH cover star Bill Skarsgård reprising his role as the titular ‘It’ aka Pennywise, while Bill Hader, James McAvoy, and Jessica Chastain also star. Take a look at the trailer below — it’s much shorter than 3 hours.

New ‘Midsommar’ Trailer Shows Festival Gone Wrong

Last year’s Hereditary, written and directed by Ari Aster in his feature-length debut, helped usher in a new wave of horror films. And his next effort Midsommar (which he also wrote & directed) seems likely to further his reign as one of the most intriguing directors of the moment.

The second trailer follows a couple in a seemingly strained relationship traveling to Sweden for a pagan-like summer festival where things slowly start to go wrong. It echos similar themes from Hereditary, mainly dysfunctional relationships, mysterious cults, and an overwhelming sense of overall dread that builds to a gruesome crescendo — kinda like The Wicker Man, but with millennials. All in all, it looks like a fun summer flick and a promising sophomore effort from the emerging filmmaker.

Midsommar (A24) hits theatres July 3. Watch the trailer above now.

Joya and A24 Unveil Movie-Genre Inspired Candles

The latest development in the movie-watching experience: New York City-based production agency A24 (of recent critical hits like Lady Bird and mid90s) reached out to fragrance designer Frederick Bouchardy of Joya with a simple yet innovative idea: create a line of scented candles inspired by six classic Hollywood film categories.

The candles tell the stories of Horror, Western, Thriller, Noir, Adventure, and Musical genres, designed to stand alone as well as a cohesive group. “There are things that carry through the whole collection: a couple kinds of geranium; ambers and patchouli and dank woody things… The candles have signature complementary elements,” Bouchardy said in a statement.

With scent descriptions like, “Horror: Leathery. Dank. Not Unsettling, but not settling…” or “Noir: Velvety. Dark. A little spicy. Like rose jam,” the flavors are complex, intelligent, and most of all, sensuous. Seeing how cinematic technology has come as far as it has, smell has yet to make its way into the experience… until now. Each candle comes encased in a thick-lipped glass vessel with glossy black finishing and each aroma is labeled with a color and a number to distinguish the six variations.

The candles are available online now at A24 and Joya, as well as at the Joya studio in Brooklyn.
