New ‘Midsommar’ Trailer Shows Festival Gone Wrong

Last year’s Hereditary, written and directed by Ari Aster in his feature-length debut, helped usher in a new wave of horror films. And his next effort Midsommar (which he also wrote & directed) seems likely to further his reign as one of the most intriguing directors of the moment.

The second trailer follows a couple in a seemingly strained relationship traveling to Sweden for a pagan-like summer festival where things slowly start to go wrong. It echos similar themes from Hereditary, mainly dysfunctional relationships, mysterious cults, and an overwhelming sense of overall dread that builds to a gruesome crescendo — kinda like The Wicker Man, but with millennials. All in all, it looks like a fun summer flick and a promising sophomore effort from the emerging filmmaker.

Midsommar (A24) hits theatres July 3. Watch the trailer above now.
