Michael Bastian Fall 2013 Menswear New York Fashion Week Models favorite five

Michael Bastian, who reliably turns out a well-executed collection of bright, breezy and boyish American classics, pretty much shocked everyone with the forest of dark, moody pieces he sent down the runway for Fall 2013. What we learned form this collection is that there is more to Bastian than he’s been letting on. He’s got a dark side, filled with leather straps, black feathers and wolves. Venturing outside the comfort zone, it would be easy for a designer to stumble. Rather Bastian conquered and in the process opened his brand up to more than a few new customers.

Tommy Hilfiger Fall 2013 Menswear runway show presentation collection nutter saville row buy sell purchase

In a word? Thrilling. In more words—Tommy Hilfiger’s Fall 2013 collection is the perfect creative expression of American style combined with British tradition. They’ve named the collection “Saville Row meets Ivy League,” but the totality of the collection is far more exciting than those generally anodyne subjects. Actually, Hilfiger took cues from Tommy Nutter—a one time Saville Row enfant terrible who shook things up a bit during the days of the Beatles and the Stones. The result is one of the most imaginative uses of classic British patterns that have ever walked the New York runway.

Billy Reid rocked out a bit with his Fall 2013 collection, revealing that southern charm may also come with elegant rebelliousness. Leather jackets are inside layers, silky fabrics are paired with woolen ones, orange and reds burst around beige and cream. You’ll also notice some sharp looking bags in the hands of the models. It’s ok if they draw your attention—they’re the first glimpses of the Fall 2013 limited edition collaboration between Coach and Billy Reid.

Favorite Five: Lacoste Fall 2013

CoverLacoste sent models onto the runway though a multi paneled, white cube,  further delving into their spacey vision of the future—technical fabrications, elongated torsos and exaggerated collars. It was a collection with two distinct feelings. There were plenty of clinical looks with sharp lines, lots of creams and whites and at least one men’s rubber looking trench. There was also a bit of wistful romance. An oversized, ombre overcoat with a glacier print is perhaps a call to the here and now to do something about global warming and the gorgeous camo loops back to primitive times with a few hidden petroglyphs.

Temperatures fluctuate. Sometimes you need two lighter jackets. Playing with print and texture is a great way to pull it off, like with this melange cotton blend padded jacket over some camo. Also, a nice way to tone down the camp-splosion that you'll be seeing in the coming months.

“We built a collection based on timeless pieces,” says Marcus Wainwright of Rag & Bone’s Fall 2013 collection. Rag & Bone’s signature military took flight with an air force theme (bombers and flight jackets) and soared into the world of tomorrow with new materials and treatments like technical nylon and rubberized leather. There were also some references Rag & Bone’s British heritage with houndstooth and a touch of mod. The show, which kicked of New York Fashion Week about a week early, was panoply of strong pieces, though we’d be remiss not to mention that the first audible gasp from the packed house came as the models sauntered past an instillation created by United Visual Artists. Three high speed cameras recorded about 1000 frames per second, capturing the models in real-time, creating a “digital echo”—an image that created a sort of evolution-scale, tripped out sense of time. Add in the mechanical, break beat version of Move on Up by Curtis Mayfield, and over all the effect was city-fied and optimistic. File under: Cool.

  • Look 20

The "Kenrick" Jacket was the star of the show. A snug, streamlined fit, yes, but also the pop color, perfectly molded shape and precision in which the hood frames the face. Worn with the brown "Marlowe" pants and it's a smooth way to pull off technical with classical.

  • Look 27

Pairing a sweatshirt with trousers and a razor jacket is both brazen and creative but it really takes off with the eggplant coated sheen.

  • Look 11

This is the kind of jacket you'll forever be accepting compliments on no matter how you wear it but we do also love the use of a loosely fixed military issue green turtleneck to give it some unexpected shape. Who needs a collar anyway?

  • Look 9

Texture from take off to landing, with the shine of the sun to boot.

  • Look 15

There'll be no shortage of cable knit sweaters for Fall 2013, but this'll probably be the only one made with rubberized leather and a scooped turtleneck.

“The Magic Mountain. This season sees the Vuitton traveller, always journeying both literally and metaphorically, venture to the magical mountains of the Himalayas, particularly to the Kingdom of Bhutan. ‘A collection is often an actual journey for us; it comprises what you take with you and what you bring back both physically and mentally from the experience,’ explains Kim Jones, Louis Vuitton’s Men’s Studio and Style Director, working under the Artistic Direction of Marc Jacobs. ‘This season involved traveling to the Himalayas for research and it was the mountain Kingdom of Bhutan that still had that mystery surrounding it; it was almost a fantasy idea as well as a real place. Backpacking has not ruined Bhutan – you have to be invited there – and it feels so exotic, almost from another time. It is the only place in the world where snow leopards and tigers cross paths and that is one of the reasons why the snow leopard became a chief motif in the collection.’

“In a triangulation of concept, colour and vision, the MUGLER men’s wear collection for Autumn Winter 2013-14 aligns creative director Nicola Formichetti’s neo-urban panache and the electric futurism of designer Romain Kremer with a respect for the 40-year heritage of Thierry Mugler. The global collision of Western tradition, Asian pop culture and technology provides a springboard for a uniform fusing street and ceremony. The avatars of our virtual lives inject the collection with a sense of hyperrealism – ‘the ability to become somebody else in a digital world,’ explains Formichetti…For the past three seasons, MUGLER men’s wear shows have featured an exclusive track from an new artist, and for Autumn Winter 2013-14 Nicola Formichetti introduces “I am MUGLER” by G Dragon from the K-Pop sensation BIGBANG빅뱅. ”
