The Greatest Alexander McQueen Runway Moments

It’s been ten years since Alexander McQueen, one of the most acclaimed designers in history, passed away. His taste for the macabre combined with his masterful technical skill set him apart from his peers and established him as a tour de force whose influence continues to infiltrate the very fashion industry he sought to disrupt. From his polarizing bumster trousers to the silk skull scarves favored by celebrities in the ’00s to the dangerously high armadillo heels, his skill for plucking elements from the depths of his mind and translating them into breathtaking wearables was utterly revolutionary. Out of all the stars that emerged at the turn of the century, none burnt as brightly as McQueen.

To honor his legacy, we revisit some of his most significant runway moments.

Fall/Winter 1995 – Highland Rape

The Fall/Winter 1995 collection remains one of McQueen’s most controversial collections but it inarguably elevated his profile to an international audience. With a purposefully misleading title meant as a shock tactic (the collection was a metaphor for England’s invasion of Scotland), it was one of the earliest demonstrations of his undeniable ability to translate something dark and violent into something beautiful and desirable.

Spring/Summer 1999 – No. 13

Despite his aversion to the theatre, McQueen knew how to put on a show. Beyond the beauty of his designs, he always sought ways to elevate his clothing beyond the confines of a traditional catwalk and really bring them to life. The final look of his Spring/Summer 1999 collection, a white tulle dress that was splattered by two robots, remains one of his most referenced moments.

Spring/Summer 2001 – Voss

Guests of the Spring/Summer 2001 show were seated around a glass box and forced to stare at their reflections for an hour before the show started. Once it did, models marched around a sterile mental asylum-like stage dressed in delicate Alfred Hitchcock’s The Birds-inspired garments. The grand finale was a recreation of Joel-Peter Witkin’s Sanitarium (1983) with a masked Michelle Olley reclined on a chaise lounge while breathing through a tube and surrounded by butterflies, delivering one of McQueen’s most powerful transgressive beauty moments.

Spring/Summer 2005

McQueen had included men’s looks in his collections for a number of seasons, but Spring 2005 was when he decided to officially launch his own men’s line. His adroit tailoring skills took center stage here, while his subversive tendencies shown in the form of painted faces and tattoo-printed muscle tees keep his menswear from being anything too traditional.

Spring/Summer 2010 – Plato’s Atlantis

Tragically, McQueen’s final collection was him at his best. Ten years after the robotic dress painting display, he once again utilized state-of-the-art technology to create enhanced animal prints and set the tone for the next decade in fashion. Some of the most memorable looks in this collection, including the armadillo heels, would be immortalized in Lady Gaga’s video for her then-unreleased single “Bad Romance,” which made its debut at the show.

A First Look at the First Louis Vuitton Restaurant

It won’t be long until you’re able to order a cup of Louis Vuitton coffee. Just last week the French designer announced that it would be venturing into hospitality with the opening of its first restaurant as part of its new expansive flagship in Osaka. Fortunately for fans of the label, there won’t a major wait time: curious customers will be able to get a first taste of the new store and its cuisine when it opens this Saturday.

The monolithic multi-level flagship store will actually house two dining options — Sugalabo V and Le Café V — which were both designed in collaboration with Japanese chef Yosuke Suga. In addition to providing customers access to clothes, accessories, luggage, and more, the new flagship will provide an opportunity for fans of the Virgil Abloh-headed label to live, breathe, and even eat Louis Vuitton. This is the retail experience millennials crave.

The new Louis Vuitton store will open on February 1 at 2 Chome-8-16 Shinsaibashisuji, Chuo Ward, Osaka, 542-0085, Japan.

Kerby Jean-Raymond Calls Out Bof 500

Kerby Jean-Raymond, founder and designer of the CFDA Award-winning label Pyer Moss, issued a lengthy statement critiquing Business of Fashion and its performative activism. Raymond was featured in the magazine’s BoF 500 list — an annual list of industry pioneers and disruptors — and states that he provided the editor-in-chief Imran Amed with a list of additional names to include in the round-up, all of which made the final list. He also said he was promised a cover story that never materialized. He also mentioned a talk that he had planned to give during the BoF Voices conference in London last year — he was under the impression that it would be a solo presentation (“like a fashion version of TED”) but while traveling to the event found out it would be a group panel discussion.

But the final straw was the BoF 500 gala, a formal event that honors industry influencers. He additionally called out the magazine for hiring a Black gospel choir to perform at the event, citing it as cultural appropriation that pushed him to leave the event. Since then, Amed has published an apology that essentially calls for unity, but fails to assume any type of accountability.

Ready Kerby Jean-Raymond’s full statement here and revisit our conversation with the designer from our Summer ’18 issue.

The iconic silhouette of Prada’s Cloudbust sneaker just got thunderstruck. The new line of Cloudbust Thunder shoes is loaded with volume, thanks to a singular 3D effect achieved by incorporating rubber into the technical fabric of the footwear. The practicality of the shoe is met by a robust and eye-grabbing design, which combines a classic palette of black, white, scarlet, and blue. A perfect mix of spectacle and streetwear practicality, the Cloudbust Thunder line is sure to make noise wherever it goes.

LV’s New Rainbow Sunglasses Are a Summer Dream

Virgil Abloh is making sure we have a technicolor summer with the new Louis Vuitton Rainbow sunglasses. The eyewear is clearly evocative of the designer’s recent rainbow-heavy Spring/Summer ‘19 collection, available in two funky frame styles that add a twist to classic styles.

Some wayfarer-like options are available in black, tan, yellow, and red. The other pairs, aviator style, come in burnt orange and bright blue with transparent accents. Most of the lenses are left simple with all black, but the clear frames offer a more futuristic reflective chrome — remember the LV chrome bag? This might just be phase two.

The Louis Vuitton Rainow Sunglasses are available online now.

Rizzoli is Publishing a Definitive Rick Owens Book

Rick Owens has emerged as one of the most compelling designers since launching his eponymous label in Los Angeles in the early ’90s. I’m pretty sure he’s the reason most Parsons students are committed to the all-black uniform. Come September, fans of the critically beloved designer can get their hands on a definitive book chronicling his career thanks to Rizzoli. Featuring photographs by Danielle Levitt and designed by Owens himself, Rick Owens is the ultimate guide to the cult designer with over 200 pages recounting his journey from avant-garde outsider to goth royalty. So make sure to add this to your coffee table collection when it comes out later this fall.

The Fendi x Jackson Wang Capsule is Out Now

As K-pop continues its path to global domination, Fendi has released a collection inspired by its global ambassador and member of Got7 Jackson Wang. The new capsule features a range of monochrome trendy pieces, including a clutch, sneakers, slides, and the brand’s signature Baguette bag, stamped with an all-over FF logo print. Wang is known for his simple yet sophisticated style — a contrast to the glitz and gloss of the K-pop scene — which is reflected in the straightforwardness of the collection.

Khalid-Al-Qasimi designer died

Designer Khalid Al Qasimi has Died at 39

Khalid Al Qasimi, designer and founder of Qasimi, passed away in London on July 1. He was 39 years old.

Qasimi moved to London when he was nine years old and later enrolled in Central Saint Martins where he received two degrees in architecture and fashion design. He founded his eponymous contemporary label in 2008, frequently commented on Middle Eastern politics, that presented collections during both London and Paris Fashion Week. He was also the second son of the ruler of Sharjah (his father Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi has reigned since 1972) in the United Arab Emirates.

Our thoughts go out to Qasimi’s family during this tragic time.

homme plisse issey miyake spring summer 2020 menswear paris show

Homme Plisse Issey Miyake Spring/Summer 2020 Recap

Guests at the Homme Plisse Issey Miyake Spring/Summer 2020 presentation were treated to an outdoor affair that reflected the lighthearted nature of the Japanese designer’s latest range. While other labels seemed to lean heavily into pastels, Miyake opted for a more bold approach (though there were still plenty of softer hues too) with bursts of color highlighting the structural details (the signature pleats were more subtle this time around but still accented more utilitarian items) and structure of the pieces. The al-fresco theme was emphasized literally with models dancing and playing with red soccer balls as they took the runway, which I’m sure to them was a walk in the park.

Travel was the prime influence in Givenchy‘s Resort 2020 collection. More specifically, it seems the designer was interested in those in-between moments of travel that seem to happen when you’re rushing across the terminal to make a connecting flight — the excited energy that one could imagine a jet-setter feels traveling the world with the ease of switching a train.

To capture this phenomenon, the designer relied on contrasting textures and styles for its menswear. Suits are served double-breasted and updated with oversized lapels and side slits in the trousers. In general, trousers (including suit trousers, cargo pants, and jeans) were flowy and oversized, a continuation of the looser pant style that was introduced in the designer’s Fall ’19 show. Athletic influences — in this case, Nascar-esque driving jackets and accompanying driving pants that emphasized the transportation theme — were embedded throughout the collection, offering an additional juxtaposition against the tailored formalwear.

The Givenchy Resort 2020 collection will be released in stores and online in July. Check out some of the looks (shot by Dario Catellani) below.

Rimowa essential collection

Rimowa Releases New Line of Luggage

Growing up, my family only relied on one set of luggage for at least decade — it was leather, durable, reliable, yet unremarkable. And because of this I always thought that the suitcase design industry moved at a somewhat glacial pace in comparison to its fashion counterpart. But something has happened since my adolescence, where luggage is now as stylish an accessory as a utility vest or impossibly small framed sunglasses. Just check out the holographic Louis Vuitton bag that made waves upon its earlier this spring and is reselling for over $10 thousand. For a generation that loves to travel — ‘Millennials crave experiences!’ marketing agencies remind us frequently — it’s clear that luggage is just another opportunity to flex.

German brand Rimowa has emerged as one of the leaders of the high-fashion luggage revolution, having already partnered with it-brands like Supreme and Virgil Abloh’s Off-White. But with its newest release, a 4-piece collection inspired by the aerial views of certain locations, it makes a return to utility. The concept behind the RIMOWA Essential collection is pretty simple, with colors inspired by picturesque landmarks (the Coral style is inspired by the Pink Lake in Australia, the Yellow model is inspired by the canola flowers of Tuscany, etc), but the resulting pieces are a timeless statement that will outlast trendier bags of the season.

The Rimowa Essential collection launches in Rimowa stores and online on June 6. Check out the campaign below.
