DIESEL UPCYCLING FOR

Diesel Launches Its First Upcycled Collection with 55DSL

After pledging its commitment to a sustainable future last month, Diesel premiered its DIESEL UPCYCLING FOR initiative during Milan Fashion Week. The ongoing series of collections will feature a guest designer each round, similar to Moncler’s Genius series, that is aligned with the brand’s four key pillars of clean fashion. The project aims to reduce the consumption of raw materials, energy use, water pollution, and greenhouse gas emissions by transforming existing products, waste material, and deadstock into capsule collections (aka upcycling). For the first collection, the brand reintroduced its offshoot brand, 55DSL. The collaboration features liberal use of bold colors and tie-dye treatments in a collection of mixed materials and overlapping logos still very much in Diesel’s loud style. The capsule will also focus on transparency with each piece having a scannable QR code — when scanned, the directed link will feature a photographic timeline of the processes used in the creation of each piece to educate customers about clean production.

DIESEL UPCYCLING FOR 55DSL is available now in select DIESEL flagship stores and on Diesel.com.

G Star Raw

G-Star Raw Makes Denim Designed for Re-Use

Furthering the sustainable fashion revolution, G-Star Raw is now making denim from sustainable materials with new enhanced properties. Already a huge proponent of clean fashion, G-Star Raw’s newest collection for Spring 2020 is made from organic cotton embedded with a new stretch fiber for ultimate comfort. And the brand doesn’t stop there: for production, G-Star Raw is using only renewable energy to create the pieces with zero harmful chemicals emitted and zero water waste. As a result, the process features traditional indigo dyeing of the garments. The brand hopes to be a positive influence on the denim industry inspiring other brands to join a truly eco-responsible revolution. In 2020, the brand aims to produce 90% of its apparel with sustainable materials.

Diesel Joins the Sustainable Fashion Revolution

Milan Fashion Week further continues the eco-conversation with Diesel’s newly announced “For Responsible Living” strategy. The brand’s president Renzo Rosso is making a commitment to sustainability by redirecting the brand in a new direction.

Following the model of the United Nation’s sustainable development (which focused on three pillars), Diesel is outlining four pillars of their own: Be The Alternative, Stand for the Planet, Celebrate Individuality, and Promote Integrity. Diesel is also partnering with Eco-Age, a sustainable consultancy, to promote and improve the platform. The launch of the campaign will kickstart the future of the brand and its role in the larger fashion industry. In the near future, Diesel plans to reduce its ecological footprint, implement a responsible (and all-inclusive) business model, seek out low-impact materials, and make sure to follow its pillars throughout its entire supply chain. Meaning — Diesel is diving straight into a no-exceptions campaign offering a true example of how sustainability can be done.

The Desigual x Ecoalf Collection is Peak Sustainable Fashion

This year, when a number of big designers announcing big plans to pivot towards more sustainable practices, brands like Desigual returned to their roots to reiterate their eco-responsible practices that have long been part of their model. In collaboration with fellow Spanish brand Ecoalf, the designer launched an entirely sustainable collection made from waste and recycled raw materials.

Desigual started in Barcelona in 1984  as a vintage store — the ultimate sustainable fashion move.  When it first launched, it used repurposed denim to patch pieces together, creating its signature patchwork style. 35 years later, the label is using entirely recycled materials throughout the collection, “Because there’s no planet B,” as the new campaign states. The commitment to the environment will ultimately result in further and exclusively sustainable collections from the brand. The current nine-piece capsule features pieces made from plastic bottles, discarded fishing nets, used tires, and recycled cotton among other things. Limited-edition custom-made jackets will also be available, combining the brand’s denim on one side of the piece with a puffer-look on the other.

Gucci Announces Plan to Go Completely Carbon-Neutral

Wrapping up the year that sustainability became fashionable, Gucci has announced a plan to become carbon-neutral across its supply chain in the near future. This news follows that the brand is also becoming fur-free. Kering, the Italian designer’s parent company, is already a frontrunner in the sustainability race with over thirty brands joining its sustainability pact this summer.

Gucci’s CEO and President Marco Bizzarri took to Instagram to encourage other brands to join the efforts. “As CEOs, we must take responsibility for the total GHG [greenhouse gas] emissions our business activities create,” Bizzari says. “Today we need to be responsible and accountable for the full scope of our GHG emissions and deliver nature-based climate solutions that mitigate these and drive positive change.” A full statement is available on Gucci’s website.

With the continued mounting of revenues, it’s the luxury brands that can lead to a change that does not hurt their business but instead takes into consideration environmental implications. The ultimate key in this equation (as Kering has concluded) is a set plan of action and transparency. Gucci’s participating companies will be held accountable for a publically declared plan of action RE: raw material production and their longterm commitment to carbon emissions.
