Louis Vuitton Inks Global Partnership with the NBA

This week in designer collabs no one saw coming: Louis Vuitton has announced a multi-year partnership with the NBA. The ongoing collaboration makes the French designer the first official Trophy Travel Case provider of the basketball league. Trunks have been a staple for the brand since its inception in 1858, with the label’s LV monogram becoming ubiquitous with luxury and travel. Its latest iteration will carry and display The Larry O’Brien Trophy which is presented during the NBA Finals in June.

“Louis Vuitton and the NBA are both icons and leaders in their respective fields, and the joining of the two promises exciting and surprising moments, forging historic memories together,” Louis Vuitton’s chairman and CEO Michael Burke said in a statement. “Louis Vuitton has long been associated with the world’s most coveted trophies, and with this iconic partnership the legacy continues – victory does indeed travel in Louis Vuitton!”

Additionally to housing the basketball trophy, the designer will release a capsule collection with the NBA later this year. The worlds of sports and designer have always had a solid symbiotic relationship, and since Virgil Abloh joined Louis Vuitton in 2018 he’s made an effort to inject the historic label with a timely street edge. This new partnership is just the latest effort to reposition the brand today and, consequently, continue to redefine the very notion of luxury in general.

Golf le Fleur* and Converse Embrace the Chunky Sneaker

The latest release from the ongoing collaboration between Converse and Tyler the Creator’s brand Golf le Fleur* might be its biggest yet. This time around, hip-hop’s most prominent aesthete, known for his soft pastels and cartoon graphics, added volume to a new Converse style: the Gianno. Pulling influences from sportswear, most notably hiking and basketball, the Gianno shoe is engineered with mesh, suede, and leather for a luxe exterior. While the outer appearance of the sneaker pulls from Converse’s basketball series from the ’90s, the chunky aesthetic remains as popular as ever. Inside, the shoe is embedded with a midfoot shank, a technical detail that helps provide balance while ascending — a feature most commonly seen in hiking gear.

The Converse x Golf le Fleur Gianno sneaker is available online now.

Dennis Rodman is the Face of Moose Knuckles Fall ’19

NBA legend and fashion icon Dennis Rodman is the star of Moose Knuckles‘ frosty Fall ’19 campaign. In the cinematic visuals, inspired by the Mexican cult film The Holy Mountain, Rodman and a myriad of talent are photographed at the Sacred Glacier, an ice mass in deep Northern Canada. The campaign is further influenced by the seven disciples and features several haunting scenes, including a group of people seated around a pentagram-shape seemingly pledging the Cult of Rodman while another shot features the basketball star donning a marabou robe in all his flashy majesty. The range of outerwear is as sturdy and stylish as ever — plush fur-lined contrasting collars and glossy shearling coats ensure that come next season, your outwear is as sleek as it is durable.

Check out some images from the campaign in the gallery above.

Catching Up with Music Video Maker Daps

In a little under a decade, Daps has emerged as a leading talent in the ever-expanding world of music videos. Having already worked with artists like Kendrick Lamar, Young Thug, and Migos (he directed the video for ‘Bad and Boujee,’ which went viral and was virtually inescapable for most of 2017), he’s quickly established himself as an authority of the genre.

Born in London, the director had an extensive basketball career, earning athletic scholarships for Campbell University and a master’s degree from Bellarmine University, before diving headfirst into filmmaking in 2010.

“My brother Luti started his own production company, called Luti Media. Initially, I was basically producing for Luti Media and that’s where I basically learned the ropes,” the 33-year old tells me over the phone. “As I’m producing, I’m producing for directors so I’m learning on the job what it takes, all the ins-and-outs.”

In an age where media is consumed on multiple platforms 24/7,  finding a way to stand out as a director is increasingly difficult — especially when streaming culture means hit songs are bigger than ever before. Often it’s an accompanying video that makes can shift a catchy song into a massive hit. “Music videos are the most watched content on YouTube. Period,” he says. “YouTube is the second most searched engine in the world, period. The first is Google, and Google owns YouTube anyway. So music videos are very fucking important,” he adds with a laugh.

With the production value that goes into his videos, it’s no surprise that Daps gets most of his inspiration from movies. The camera movements in his video for Migos’ ‘T-Shirt’ was inspired by the football drama Any Given Sunday. He cites Quentin Tarantino’s method of extending scenes to be a continuous source of inspiration. In the age where social media dominates cultural trends, incorporating these nostalgic references is essential to surviving in an oversaturated media landscape. But with a new video for rising UK-based rapper Mist and goals to work with musical royalty Beyoncé and Rihanna, it’s clear that Daps is only getting started.

“It’s easier to be a filmmaker. It’s not easier to be a good filmmaker, necessarily,” he says. “Things are cheaper and quicker, you don’t need to go to film school anymore — you can just have your iPhone and iMovie. The access is easier as well for minorities, women, people of color. Now we don’t need ‘you’ [the system].”

Paul McCartney Can’t Sit Still at a Lakers’ Game

Paul McCartney & Nancy Shevell Share A Kiss At The Clippers Game

Image: Daily Mail.

At 71, Paul McCartney is showing no signs of wear or tear in his seven-decade spanning career. This past weekend, the legendary singer was out and about in the City of Angels, spotted with his wife Nancy Shevell (who — random — is Barbara Walter’s second cousin) at an LA Lakers Game.  Wouldn’t you know it, halfway through the game the kiss cam found its way over to the two, and you can guess both by the above picture and the implication of the design of the kiss cam what transpired next. Still stumped? Here’s video (hint: they kiss):

Video: Daily Mail.

That seemed pretty awesome, until he got up and did this, which recalibrated McCartney’s threshold for awesome:
