Balmain Spring/Summer 2017 Campaign

Balmain Spring/Summer 2017Image: Balmain.

Tony Ward and Jon Kortajarena command the center of attention in Balmain‘s Spring/Summer 2017 campaign. Featuring the heavy-contrasted eye of Steven Klein with all the rough and tumble of a gritty Eastwood flick, the prints showcase a similar vibe to the previous season’s iteration, though exchanging the brooding mood for a high-cheekboned, desert march. Shot on a disguised Californian road, the images highlight a line of stylized defiance where textile movement proves its strength.

Steven Klein Ushers in 2017 for Equinox

Equinox 2017Image: Steven Klein.

Iconic fashion photographer Steven Klein lends his bitingly crisp lens to Equinox‘s 2017 visual campaign for a macabre peek at the industry-leading fitness center. Building on last year’s chiseled interpretation, the group continues to assure that “it’s not fitness, it’s life,” with cinematic prints that profess a dystopian, party-filled, gloomily gothic future. Distilled with the photographer’s grisly touch, the chilling images feature Samantha Paige, Brian Shimansky, Jessica Stam, and Ralph Souffrant.

In honor of Gap‘s 45th anniversary, the company, a brand that has made its name for making fashion accessible to all, has partnered for a final time with avant-garde art and fashion magazine Visionaire, a cult-favorite publication whose praise correlates directly to its ultra-limited issue release, on a capsule collection of sweatshirts and T-shirts. The fourth of the pair’s year-long exercise in design, the collection, which premiered today at Frieze London, falls upon Visionaire‘s keen knowledge of the visual landscape and includes work from a roster of emerging and respected artists—Anna Blessman & Peter Saville, Cai-Guo Qiang, Diana Vreeland, Greg Foley, Sharon Ellis, Steven Klein, and more—printed onto Gap’s cloth canvases. Unveiled today at a special lounge built exclusively for the art fair, the Visionaire x Gap ART collection will be available in a limited run of 500 pieces.

"Inventing David Geffen" New York Premiere

The Ten Most Iconic Photos from Calvin Klein’s Career

"Inventing David Geffen" New York Premiere

Calvin Klein rose from a young, immigrant’s son in the Bronx of New York to a household name and a legacy in American fashion. In honor of the designer’s birthday today (Happy 71, Mr. Klein!) we pay homage to his long lasting and slightly-controversial career with our ten most favorite and iconic photos from the man who changed runway and retail, for better or worse:

  • Untitled-2
    1. Vogue-Featured B&W Bachelor

For its 1975 November issue, American Vogue highlighted the designer's then newly-finished apartment on New York's Upper East Side. His first marriage had ended a year earlier, and in response, Klein enlisted famous contemporary designer Joseph D’Urso to create a black and white industrious bachelor bad for his new, stylishly-single life.

    2. Master of Denim

Although he technically founded cK Calvin Klein Jeans (arguably the first collection of American designer denim) in 1976, it wasn't until 1977—when Klein modified the fit to accentuate both the crotch and buttocks—that his jeans became a must-have fashion item. Here is the designer photographed above with supermodel Janice Dickinson in Vogue Paris of the same year.

  • BrookeSheilds
    3. Supermodel Support

At just 14-years-old Brooke Shields appeared in 1980 in a now-iconic photo campaign and television ad shot by photographer Richard Avedon. In the latter Shields so cooly says, "You want to know what comes between me and my Calvins? Nothing."

  • CK1982
    4. After The Jean, The Underwear

In 1982 US Olympic pole-vaulter Tom Hintanus starred in the campaign for Klein's first underwear collection for men shot by Bruce Weber. The success of both the brand and the image is still widely acknowledged to this day, with the latter having been named one of American Photographer Magazine's “10 Pictures That Changed America.”

  • MarkMarkKateMoss

    5. Mark and Moss

At the height of the 90's AIDS epidemic, reign of the supermodel, and rule of the jean, Kate Moss starred with Mark Wahlberg—then, still just Marky Mark—in a controversial Calvin Klein campaign titled, “The best protection against AIDS is to keep your Calvins on" shot by Herb Ritts.

  • CKOne
    6. One For All

After finding success with his first two scents, Obsession in 1985 and Eternity in 1988, in 1994 Klein releasef cK One, a citrus aromatic fragrance for both women and men.

  • Fimmel
    7.  Body, Body, Body

In 2001, Australian model and actor Travis Fimmel became the first male in the world to secure a six-figure deal to model exclusively for Calvin Klein for a year. During this time, famed photographed Steven Klein shot Fimmel for a campaign for Calvin Klein body.

  • CKPVH
    8. Buy For Now

Phillips-Van Heusen, the world's largest shirt company and owner of American brands such as Tommy Hilfiger and Izod, purchased Calvin Klein from its founder in 2003, ending Klein's footprint on the American fashion house for at least the time being.

  • Gods Love

    9. Still Keeping Face

Although nominally out of the game, Klein still remained active in both fashion and social circles. Above he is pictured in 2008 with John Demsey, Donna Karan, Anna Wintour and Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg at a gala for New York-based charity God's Love We delivery.

  • CalvinNick
    10.  Work Or Play?

In 2010, Klein became romantically linked to model and adult film star Nick Gruber, although the exact details of their relationship has been highly contested in the media by Gruber earlier this year

Calvin Klein Takes on the Super Bowl Ad

Calvin Klein Super bowl Ad Matthew Terry Concept Underwear Sale Launch Buy Purchase

There are usually three things people talk about the day after the Super Bowl. First—well…the game. Second—the half time performance (last year Madonna, this year Beyoncé). Third—the ads. On Monday, Feb 4th, there’ll be talk of a :30 spot for Calvin Klein Concept Underwear—the brand’s very first foray into the highest echelon of American television advertising. The mostly denuded commercial depicts model personal trainer-cum-model Matthew Terry as the iconic archetype in a modern “man versus machine” creative inspired by the sleek 360º seamless technology construction of the new men’s Calvin Klein Concept line. Shot in New York City, the campaign video was conceived and directed by consulting creative director Fabien Baron of Baron + Baron, working with Calvin Klein’s in-house global marketing and advertising agency. The print component (seen above) was shot by Steven Klein. The commercial will air towards the end of the first quarter of the game. Of course, if you can’t wait till then, just click right on through…

The new Calvin Klein Concept underwear line is currently available for purchase in the U.S. on calvinklein.com and at the Calvin Klein Underwear stores in Soho and Georgetown, as well as select retailers around the country. The product begins arriving in store at other fine retailers around the world and throughout the global network of Calvin Klein Underwear stores the first week of February.

Calvin Klein Bold Spring 2012 Campaign Video

When Steven Klein and Calvin Klein Underwear work together, you can be sure there’ll be beauty in almost every dimension. This is evidenced by the pairing’s striking video component for Calvin Klein Bold’s Spring 2012 ad campaign (you may remember the print campaign was launched early in February). Klein, who shot the print campaign, co-directed this video with Fabien Baron. The video features an ambient soundtrack contrasting the sounds of heartbeats with those of natural “silence”, models displaying perfect male physique and of course the bright colors of Bold’s Spring 2012 collection set against the natural beauty of Joshua Tree National Park. The effect is stark, gorgeous and wholly Klein—both of them.
