Saks’ Men’s Store in Brookfield Place is Closing Today

Another one bites the dust. Saks‘ Men’s Store in Brookfield Place will close later today, just a year after the women’s shop in the same downtown shopping center closed earlier.

The vast 16,750-square-foot store — the company’s first exclusively menswear store — opened in early 2017 and aimed to attract a downtown customer (who they identified as a cross between alternative creative-type and finance guy, apparently) different than the type that shops at the store’s Fifth Avenue location. Despite the sudden closure, Saks will retain the space and has plans to unveil a new retail initiative later this year. With major retailers struggling to determine a new model to appeal to the modern shopper, we’re likely to witness a few more bumps in the road as retailers attempt to adapt to the new decade.

“With this branch location, we determined that our customers’ preferred shopping experience is a combination of our digital channels and our iconic Fifth Avenue flagship, where we have created an unparalleled luxury shopping destination,” Hudson’s Bay Co. Inc, the retail group that owns Saks, told WWD.

DADA Daily Teams Up With Saks Fifth Ave for the Holidays

In a display dubbed “Home for the Holidays,” novelty surrealist snacks and home decor brand DADA Daily presents their assortment of design objects on the 9th floor of Saks Fifth Avenue’s flagship store. The seasonal collaboration is a marriage of the traditional with that slightly beyond understanding that features some of DADA Daily’s founder Claire Olshan key pieces, including a hand-shaped wax candle, profile decor and bowl piece, and a diverse assortment of healthy snacks. Fan-favorite cauliflower popcorn florets newly joined by crunchy sweet potato aioli curls and lip-shaped truffles.

The official launch was attended by some media powerhouses, from Leandra Medine to Rosie Assoulin and Eric Marx amongst others. The display also featured other brands including pieces from L’Objet, LADORADA, EtroJonathan Adler, LSA, and more. DADA Daily will be available at Saks New York and online through the end of the month.

Adding clout to its hold on NYC retail, Saks Fifth Avenue opens Saks Downtown Men’s, its first all men’s brick-and-mortar location. Featuring 16,000 square feet of the very best in fashion, the store promises to bridge the gap between the digital and physical, the minds at work hoping to woo a target demographic more World Wide Web-inclined than most. Carrying over 100 brands, the shop is a sleek silver, white, black, and taupe, an understated attempt to unify the many products under one common palette. For those looking for something a bit more personal than your run-of-the-mill shopping experience, the onsite Fifth Avenue Club provides private styling sessions where a client is invited to craft their ideal outfit using an interactive, made-to-measure interface to select fabrics, linings, buttons, and more. Sport coats created with the machine will even feature a “x YOU” byline included within the label, giving clients complete design authority.

The cherry on top of this sartorial sundae—a Leather Spa that provides quick hospital help for those pieces that seem just a little worse for wear and could benefit from a little tender loving care. Saks Downtown Men’s also hosts its own permanent space that will see a revolving door of collaborations in the upcoming months, its current installation, World of Sneakers, featuring over 200 styles of designer kicks that together create an enchanting walkthrough. Be sure to stick around for the upcoming SHARPS Barber and Shop and FIKA Coffee Bar, opening spring 2017—completing an already otherworldly shopping experience from a Manhattan staple.

Saks Downtown Men’s is open now at 250 Vesey Street, New York, NY 10080.

New! Welcome to Ballast Time Instruments

Ballast Watches Time pieces launch price buy purchase stores tourneau Saks Fifth Avenue Submarine Martime Inspired price

It’s not everyday that we get to celebrate the launch of a new line time instruments, let alone one that’s got some nice vintage naval references, so say hello to Ballast, which is exactly that. More details about the launch of the new watch line after the jump.

Built with four principles in mind – legibility, functionality, precision, and water-resistance – the Ballast collection launches with an astounding fifty-eight styles (forty-nine for the fellas) in total that are inspired by old school, military submarine life. We also see some antique industrial beauty in them too. The time pieces are constructed using solid marine-grade 316L stainless steel cases, screw lock crowns, and either Swiss or Automatic movements with power reserve indicators. But don’t think you have to be a seaman to pull these off, because the band styles offer something for ‘everyman’, ranging from timeless stainless steel and integrated silicon to coveted premium leathers.  In conjunction with the release of their first collection, the brand has launched Ballast1903.com (interesting fact: 1903 is the year the first industrialized submarine was launched) as a hub of inspiration, renderings, and nautical film shorts—a gem of inspiration for any maritime looks.

The collection, priced from $350-$595, can be found at Saks Fifth Avenue stores and Tourneau’s website.

It was hard to walk through the events upon events at Saks last night without catching a glimpse of someone famous— Anna Wintour, Darren Criss (who was signing copies of Vogue), Mr. Oscar de la Renta, Amar’e Stoudemire, Susan Sarandon, Vanessa Carlton, Max and Lubov Azria, Fern Mallis, Erin Fetherston, Rachel Roy, Lance Bass, Kimberly Ovitz, Rebecca Minkoff, Sachin & Babi—to name just a few. And if that wasn’t enough you could have also played Wii Sports Resort Fencing with US Olympic medalist fencer, Tim Morehouse.
