Apple, Supreme, Kith, Nike, and More Are Temporarily Closing

Late last week, Supreme announced it would temporarily close its stores to help prevent further spread of coronavirus (COVID-19). The New York-based skate brand is the latest retailer to temporarily shutter while the world grapples with a new day-to-day reality in the middle of the coronavirus.

Apple also announced the closure of all its international stores — except for China, where it just reopened all 42 of its stores after the country successfully contained the outbreak!  — and Nike has followed suit. Urban Outfitters, Kith, and 3.1 Phillip Lim also announced closures of their stores in major cities. And ahead of its permanent closure, Opening Ceremony has temporarily shut its doors as well. Across the country, lockdowns are being implemented with bars, restaurants, movie theaters, and other public institutions being forced to shut down, so more retailers will soon follow suit.

Opening Ceremony x Hoka One Give Running Shoes a Luxe Update

For the first time, Opening Ceremony has partnered with French sneaker label Hoka One. The debut collection merges the footwear brand’s superior functionality with Opening Ceremony’s distinct lens for striking design, resulting in a two-color range of the brand’s Bondi 5 sneaker.

Available in black or white, the OC x Hoka Bondi 5 is made with premium leather, offering an elevated take on the utilitarian athletic piece. The exterior of the footwear is subtly accented with panels outlined with minimal stitching, and the interior is cushioned with Hoka’s technology and heel support that ensures smooth mobility whether active or relaxed.

The Opening Ceremony x Hoka One Bondi 5 range will be available in select OC stores and online tomorrow, November 1.

Solange Helped Close Out Kenzo Spring/Summer 2020

Earlier this month, Humberto Leon and Carol Lim announced they would step down as creative directors for Kenzo following the Spring/Summer 2020 show to focus on running Opening Ceremony. The final collection was a toned down amalgamation of all the things that makes the Japanese/French label pop: rich color hues, an abundance of prints, and an athletic sensibility that keeps the brand fresh. This time around, a beachy color palette (lots of deep blues and glimpses of coral orange) was inspired by the designer’s West Coast upbringing. In celebration of Leon and Lim’s impact on Kenzo, Solange provided the soundtrack the show, treating guests to an intimate performance and a mighty farewell.

Humberto Leon and Carol Lim are Leaving Kenzo

Another day, another major designer shakeup. After an 8-year stint that expanded Kenzo‘s graphic novelty to new heights, creative directors Humberto Leon and Carol Lim are leaving the brand.

“We are thankful to our wonderful Kenzo team and the LVMH group for the opportunity to take forward [founder Kenzo] Takada’s groundbreaking legacy,” the pair said in a statement. “We are excited to bring so many rich experiences and memories from our time at Kenzo to new frontiers.”

The duo will present their final collection for the Japanese/French label on June 23 for Spring 2020 before stepping down officially so they can focus on their other project, which is basically running the global cult retail sensation Opening Ceremony. Their predecessors have not been announced yet, but the next figure appointed should be well versed in color and yield a taste for playful graphics. Someone like Henry Holland could do great things at the helm of such an iconic label, but only time will tell.

R13 Opens in SoHo with Post-Punk Industrial Space

Inspired by themes of the “Other America,” luxury basics label R13 has opened a sleek new shop on SoHo’s Howard Street, alongside neighboring shopping destinations including Opening Ceremony, Rick Owens, and Reformation. The boutique — the designer’s first since the brand was founded back in 2009 — is a sprawling and immersive space that pays homage to various American subcultures. The store maintains a minimal and industrial interior aesthetic (the new normal in contemporary downtown retail) that’s contrasted with a series of large LED walls streaming various footage that’s more nightclub than clothing store.

R13 is open now at 34 Howard Street.

Kenzo’s SS19 Sunglasses Collection Launches at Opening Ceremony

Designed in collaboration with Thélios, the LVMH-owned eyewear maker, Kenzo has released its SS19 eyewear collection at Opening Ceremony in Los Angeles. The fantastic retro assortment of sunglasses mixes the French/Japanese designer’s contemporary city edge with a mellow California vibe, perfect for riding around town or heading to the beach. The combination of vintage cues with futurism is surprisingly effective and gives you an idea of what the Beach Boys would wear if they ever were to pilot a spaceship.
