Tom Ford Makes Dramatic Return to Film with Nocturnal Animals

Video: Focus Features.

One of the buzziest films to show at TIFF this year, Nocturnal Animals is the bleak, sensually gritty drama you’ve been waiting for. Written and directed by sartorial savant Tom Ford, Nocturnal Animals, his first film since the critical darling A Single Man in 2009, follows the tumultuous world of an art gallery owner, Amy Adams, and her ex-husband, Jake Gyllenhaal, as he releases a violent thriller novel dedicated in her vengeful honor. Part art-house think piece, part gut-wrenching psycho-drama, the film is a daring choice for Ford, whose previous work he dubbed one of his most personal creative efforts – one that earned him a place in the halls of Tinseltown’s most visually enticing and aesthetically engrossing directors.

Starring alongside Adams and Gyllenhaal are a slew of glittering Hollywood names, including ESSENTIAL HOMME August/September 2015 cover star Michael Shannon as Detective Bobby Andes – an officer with thinly veiled motives, as well as film favorites Isla Fisher, Laura Linney, and Aaron Taylor-Johnson. Winner of the Grand Jury Prize at the 73rd Venice International Film Festival and based on the divisive novel “Tony and Susan” by Austin Wright, Nocturnal Animals is a Hitchcockian, psycho-sexual foray into a razor-sharp world filled to the brim with skeptical mistrust, serrated unease, and, in true Tom Ford fashion, wonderfully decadent wardrobing.

Nocturnal Animals is scheduled to release in theaters November 18, 2016.

Michael Cera and Tavi Gevinson to Make ‘Youth’-ful Broadway Debuts

CeraTavi

When Kenneth Lonergan’s play This Is Our Youth premiered off-Broadway in 1996, Mark Ruffalo starred as Warren, a dejected 19-year-old who had just been kicked out of his house and stolen $15,000 from his abusive lingerie-tycoon father. The plot followed Warren and two other “privileged and foolish young adults” in Manhattan’s Upper West Side circa 1982. In 2002 the show transferred to the Garrick Theatre in London, and the cast grew to feature an oscillating line-up of Hollywood talent which included Matt Damon, Jake Gyllenhaal, Hayden Christensen, Colin Hanks, Chris Klein, Casey Affleck, Freddie Prinze Jr., Anna Paquin, Alison Lohman, and Summer Phoenix. And now, today,  it’s revival time, baby!

In an act that can be called nothing shy of genius, the revival — which will first bow at Chicago’s Steppenwolf in June, before transferring to New York in August — will star Michael Cera (Arrested Development and Juno), Tavi Gavinson (Rookie Magazine and recent Miley Cyrus interviewee), and Kieran Culkin (Igby Goes Down and The Cider House Rules). Whille Cera and Culkin previously starred in a 2012 Australian production of the play, this production will mark the Broadway debut for all three young stars.

Showboating the good news, the production will also feature original music composed by Grammy winner Rostam Batmanglij of Vampire Weekend.

Previews are set to start on August 18, 2014, for a September 11th opening at the Cort Theatre.

Ruh Roh! Zac Efron Slips On Puddle; Jake Gyllenhaal Punches Mirror

Who had it worse this week, Zac Efron or Jake Gyllenhaal? You decide:

zac-efron-townies-2

Poor Zac Efron, he was on his way in the door—or out the door—whatever: point is, he was outside of his house, and you know how LA is — full of puddles — and sometimes you slip and fall. Though 911 was not called, he did break his jaw and had to have his mouth wired shut.

“He has to eat through a straw on a syringe. It’s horrible. He’s in great spirits. He’s just like, ‘Wow. It hurts.'” A revelatory quote from director/friend Adam Shankman.

Poor Jake Gyllenhaal, this one’s a bit of a doozy, but apparently Gylly was pulling an 18-hour day on the set of his new flick Nightcrawler (in character, it should be noted) when he punched a mirror in a fit of anger (in character!). He suffered minor cuts, but was nonetheless rushed to the ER where he received stitches and a strict orders to avoid all mirrors (on-set and off).

Our vote: A draw.

Depp Goes Blonde, Gyllenhaal Goes Gaunt, LaBeouf Goes Nude

Three very particular news items, in seemingly no particular order.

Johnny Depp and Sir Christopher Lee

J. Depp attended the 57th London Film Festival Awards at Banqueting House Whitehall over the weekend to support his friend and former co-star Sir Christopher Lee. And he came with a new look, a blonde one. No ‘blondes have more fun jokes,’ please. Is it for an upcoming film role? Verdict is out. We vote: Hope not. Looks good.

17th Annual Hollywood Film Awards - Arrivals

Speaking of film roles, J. Gyllenhaal showed up at the 17th Annual Hollywood Film Aawards on Monday night with a new svelte gaunt look. The 32-year-old actor is in full prep-mode for his upcoming film Nightcrawler, in which he plays a crime journalist… one who’s not about those Sunday buffets. “I think [I’ve lost] probably a little over 20 pounds, something like that,” Gyllenhaal told People Magazine, “It’s not different than getting into character for anything. It’s more about believe where you are and being present where you are. Who’s to say what the process is? I have a strange one … but I love what I do.”

S. LaBeouf is no stranger to showing off his unclothed body. He did it in the Sigur Rós music video Fjögur píanó. Then he insinuated to MTV News that he would be having real sex in Lars Von Trier’s upcoming film Nymphomaniac stating, “Anything that is ‘illegal’ will be shot in blurred images. But other than that, everything is happening….It’s going to be a wild movie, man. It’s going to be a wild movie.” And now, just days ago, because why privacy why, LaBeouf (no Shia in the LaBuff jokes here!) took to his Instagram account to promote his new film Charlie Countryman (in theatres 11/15 — look, it worked) with a little nudity.

JAKE GYLLENHAAL IN BURBERRY OWNS THE CASUAL SUIT

Now this is how you rock look in a casual suit—like Jake Gyllenhaal did on Monday rolling into this appearance on “The Late Show with David Letterman”. It’s a classic Burberry two-butoned single breasted suit, fitted but relaxed, white shirt—sans tie, classic wing tips and with a cool pair of shades. The subtle texture in the suit is enough to say that you’ve got a style about you, while the lack of fussy accessories keeps it on the chill side. The look can quickly be spruced up with a tie or pocket square or even further dressed down by pairing it with a cool pair of sneakers. Trends’ll come and go in suiting (see cropped double breasted blazer for this season) but the right two button single breasted suit, like this one from Burberry, will always be timeless.
