What Exactly Are Adidas and Prada Up to?

In an industry that’s polluted with collabs — the likes of many which are covered right here on Essential Homme — anything is possible. Supreme can get with Baccarat. Nike can get with Carhartt WIP. Virgil Abloh can add quotation marks to an entire line of IKEA furniture. The list goes on. It takes a bit more effort these days to do anything truly shocking in terms of collabs, which is why it’s interesting that a minor internet frenzy was caused yesterday after Adidas and Prada teased and announced their partnership on both their respective Instagrams.

After each brand posted the same image — a Prada shopping bag filled with two Adidas shoeboxes — the hype was only fueled by fan speculation. But despite the cloak of mystery (however mysterious something can be once it’s posted to a combined audience of 46 million), people were quickly able to determine that the forthcoming release was likely a pair of shoes — the shoeboxes in the aforementioned image seem to confirm this. Additionally, WWD confirmed that Prada and Adidas will release two styles in December with plans for a second drop in early 2020. So if you’re not able to secure a pair of coveted Pradidas shoes (see what I did there?) for Christmas, you might be able to use some holiday money to buy them in the new year.

Virgil Abloh Releases Final Trailer for IKEA Collab

After over a year of build-up, Virgil Abloh’s highly anticipated collection with IKEA will be released on Friday. The collection of home goods, which includes an illuminated Mona Lisa print, clocks, rugs, a simple no-tool-assembly wooden table, and an oversized IKEA receipt rug/tapestry, all inscribed with Abloh’s distinct flair.

The collection will only be officially released in US IKEA stores over the weekend, although a few select items will be stocked in UK and Ireland stores. Regardless, the items will probably sell out as soon as they hit the shelves. IKEA is preparing for a slight frenzy on release day — the company shared that customers can start lining up at the front of the store from 7AM and will be given a wristband upon entry. Overnight parking is prohibited and a maximum of one item per customer rule will be enforced.

Check out Virgil Abloh’s latest trailer ahead of the drop below.

Virgil Abloh’s IKEA Collection Gets an Official Release Date

Even though the Virgil Abloh x IKEA furniture collaboration was first announced two years ago, progress has been somewhat slow. This is understandable, as Virgil has had a lot on his plate, whether it’s launching another range of household goods with Off-white, overseeing menswear at Louis Vuitton, or DJing his own Vegas residency — so much that his doctor told him to take a break for three months. But lovers of high-fashion and Scandinavian furniture can rejoice, for the collection of goods is officially coming next month.

On November 1, the Markerad (which roughly translates to “crisp” and “pronounced” in Swedish) collection hits stores. Here are some of the things to look forward to: a 3 x 7 foot rug in the likeness of a lengthy Ikea receipt, a brown shopping bag printed with the word “SCULPTURE,” a green rug that reads “WET GRASS,” and a light-up print of the Mona Lisa equipped with a USB port that is sure to be the hottest item in every dorm this winter.

There are some more straightforward options as well, including a lightwood chair and table set that requires no tool assembly and a clear-glass cabinet. So whether you’re into understated interiors or the occasional statement piece, the Markerad collection is a sure way to add some street cred to your humble abode.

Furnish Your “HOME” With Off-White’s Latest

Ahead of a collaboration with IKEA that’s set to launch in November, Off-White has launched another range of home goods. The new “HOME” collection — split into three sections, “CERAMICS,” “BED,” and “BATH” — features an array of household items, including tableware, mugs, embroidered pillowcases, sheet sets, and a throw blanket. While an early look at the designer’s collab with IKEA showcased a rug with a prominent graphic, this range of pieces is a lot more subtle. The ceramic pieces are white and feature subtle branding and a bee motif, with few quotation marks in sight. The loudest piece is a bright orange throw blanket that features the brand’s cross-arrow logo and a small embroidered patch reading “HOME.”

As of now, no official release date for the Off-White “HOME” collection has been set. Check out some more pictures of the pieces above.

A First Look at Virgil Abloh’s Ikea Collection

Virgil Abloh, the accomplished designer, founder of Off-White, and current artistic director for Louis Vuitton‘s menswear teased his collaboration with Ikea, “MARKREAD,” this weekend in Paris via Instagram. Displayed in a pop-up shop at Nuits Fauves, a club located on the ground level of the Cité de la Mode, the collection featured rugs with signature “Virgil-isms.” Other items from the collection were revealed, including a “Temporary” clock, a glass cabinet, and two brown paper “Sculpture” shopping bags. There’s still no word on when the full range of Virgil homewares will drop, so we’re just gonna have to be keep waiting. However, some controversy has already begun over the design and inspiration of the door-stop-chair, called out by Diet Prada. What do you think?

Stampd Returns to Tradition for FW18

The Los Angeles-based streetwear/lifestyle company Stampd has debuted its Fall/Winter 18 collection today. Reverting back to tradition (which, fittingly, is the name of the collection), the brand heavily incorporated silhouettes and design cues from its inaugural collection back in 2011. The building blocks of the designer’s core aesthetic have been repurposed into pieces that show its evolution while acknowledging its roots. It’s also the first release in an ongoing six-month series that will include many drops arriving later this fall. We spoke to Chris Stamp, Stampd’s mastermind, about the latest collection and lifestyle behind the label.

EH: Is there a particular reason you want to bring back early silhouettes this year?
CS: The past few seasons I’ve been lending a lot of creative time to different projects and collaborations while still maintaining creative control over Stampd’s RTW and Lifestyle collections. For fall, I made it a point to set aside time where I could look back on past seasons and see what I loved about certain pieces and what our customer responded most enthusiastically to. There’s so much inspiration in what we’ve done that I wanted to look inward rather than outward for creative direction.

EH: How do you feel about the overwhelming obsession with nostalgia infiltrating fashion and general pop culture?
CS: Design is an art form whether I am shooting a lookbook, designing a collection, or making a surfboard. For me, injecting nostalgia into your collections and designs is a form of self-expression. I choose to work with brands like IKEA and Gap because those brands have meant something to me since I was a kid. Working with companies like that on a global scale really gives you added drive to create something amazing and unique.

EH: Are there any particular influences you find yourself going back to when designing?
CS: I always start with a minimal, monochromatic palette no matter what I’m creating. When you start clean you can always add subtle inspirations, design details, and pops of color as you go along. You can always add more – so start with a clean pallet.

EH: Can you elaborate the lifestyle associated with Stampd?

CS: [It’s a] Heavy West Coast influence. It’s a harmony between luxury, surf and street culture.

EH: What’s the best style advice you’ve ever been given?

CS: Stay consistent and never give up. Each obstacle/experience should be a building block to your future goal. Wear what you love, comfort is key.

STAMPD x IKEA Partner for Home Collection

STAMPD x IKEA
Image: STAMPD x IKEA.

Though home furnishings may occupy much of the current fashion frontier—see Versace’s Vasmara line or Loewe’s Salone del Mobile installation for reference—Cali-born STAMPD aims to bring something new to the self-designed table through its first home-goods partnership alongside IKEA. Announced at this year’s Milan Furniture Fair, and with IKEA’s “passion for life at home” mantra at its forefront, the new line will focus not on grandeur but rather on the simplified, the crux of the collection building on its ability to assist, rather than detract from, a customer’s lifestyle. Centered around a strategy of at-home storage and its many capacities, the pieces are meant to organize and display items that project a customer’s self-image within the home. Whether it’s one of STAMPD’s Louisville Sluggers or an IKEA tchotchke, the principle of the design theory is to de-clutter one’s life to better instill a personable energy that reflects a specific space’s inhabitant, broadcasting a consumer’s lifestyle, rather than obscuring it from view. This inaugural partnership between STAMPD’s contemporary luxury aesthetic and IKEA’s global vision provides a smooth segue into the young brand’s upcoming minimalist pieces and would seem to profess the staying power of the 2011-founded label.

The STAMPD x IKEA collection will be available in IKEA stores beginning in Spring 2018.
