Saint Laurent Everlast Vignette

Saint Laurent Rive Droite x Everlast Boxing Accessories Out Now

Saint Laurent Rive Droite is starting the year with a bang with a collaboration with legendary boxing brand Everlast. Renowned as the brand of choice for the best boxers and professional fighter, the new line is a monochrome array of boxing essentials, namely gloves, a bag, shorts, headgear, and a few other accessories. The range was inspired by Michael Halsband’s black and white photographs of Andy Warhol and Jean Michel Basquiat faux-boxing on set and sporting Everlast pieces. Saint Laurent gave those pieces an upgrade using high-grade leather, high-quality satin, and individually handcrafting each pair of boxing gloves. With this kind of attention to detail, no opponent is a threat. And for those who prefer to avoid bruises, they can flex their designer gear to a class at Rumble.

All products and photographs will be available exclusively at Saint Laurent Rive Droite.

Off-White Spring/Summer 2020

Off-White Spring/Summer 2020 Was a Tribute to Street Art

Virgil Abloh’s latest for Off-White Spring/Summer 2020 was designed in collaboration with New York graffiti artist Futura. Back in the ’80s, Futura showed alongside other seminal city artists like Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat with his distinct abstract street art style which has been incorporated into the collection. Airbrush-like techniques printed on white suits and other tailored pieces gave them a very ’80s vibe — remember that super colorful Information Society video? Additionally, a mesh-fence theme printed throughout the collection established an urban vibe while tie-dyed cargo pants were a new spin on utility wear. The collection also debuted new Futura x Nike styles as part of the ongoing collaboration between the brands.

‘Basquiat – A Portrait’ Offers an Intimate Glimpse of the Icon

Jean-Michel Basquiat remains a pivotal New York figure whose work will continue to inject itself into many aspects of contemporary design for years to come. Further feeding the demand for all things Basquiat, American photographer Richard Corman is releasing a book of exclusive never-before-seen portraits of the seminal artist exclusively via Vero. Basquiat – A Portrait is an intimate glimpse of the eponymous artist, providing a lens to the man behind some of the most recognizable artwork of the 20th century.

“In 1984, I was asked to photograph Jean-Michel Basquiat for L’Uomo Vogue,” Corman said in a statement. “When I walked into the artist’s loft I was engulfed by a wave of creative confusion. The room was a swirl of people, paint, canvas, color, and smoke. Off in the corner was Basquiat submerged and almost invisible. My initial instinct was to remove him from all the distractions and place him in front of a thin four-foot wall of grey seamless paper. I wanted to see behind his eyes and allow him to tell the most elemental part of his story – the human spirit behind the art. It is tempting to second guess the decision I made that day at 57 Great Jones Street, but I was interested in a simple portrait of a complicated genius.”

Designed in partnership with NJG Studio and Ruedi Hofmann, the book’s design allows it to fold out into a 13-foot banner. The limited-run of 500 books are each signed by Corman and available online on April 24.

Now on View: ‘Jean-Michel Basquiat Reclining Nude’

FR27

Even today—with gentrification less of an approaching fear and more of a been there, done that—downtown Manhattan still clings to a handful of pieces of anger and confession; reminents of the landscape that the late artist Jean-Michel Basquiat explored in his work. Questioning the rules of social structure in the late 70’s/early 80’s era, Basquiat worked with parallels. He exposed dichotomies such as the desperation gap between the haves and the have-nots, or the interaction between homogeneity and minority groups, in violent neo-expressionist paintings until his early death in 1988. Now, in a rare viewing, the Suzanne Geiss Company hosts Jean-Michel Basquiat Reclining Nude, a series of intimate, black and white photographs of the painter from photographer Paige Powell’s comprehensive archive. Originally taken in 1983 at Powell’s then-Upper West Side apartment, the candid images reflect the closeness of the two, who at the time were dating, as well as casts a interestingly-calm cast of the mostly-known angry artist.

Jean-Michel Basquiat Reclining Nude is on view at Suzanne Geiss Company (76 Grand Street, New York, NY) until February 22, 2014.

TOPMAN SS13 AT LONDON COLLECTIONS: MEN

topman

Inspired by 80’s art icon Basquiat (and we’ll add—a hefty dose of Stephen Sprouse), the Spring/Summer 2013 Topman collection is populated by vibrant, stand-out goodies at almost every turn. The look is relaxed all the way – from chilled out cali to the ennui of downtown New York. Fluorescent orange threads pop on prince of whales check suiting with lose fitting, pleated, turned-up shorts. This is a look that is sure to permeate the streets next summer. Over-sized mesh tops in bright, fluorescent block colors  are paired with coordinating knee-length shorts and worn with Technicolor trainers. Laser-cutting lends itself throughout the collection replacing pinstripes on loose fitting block color jackets and short, oversized mesh holes on jackets and suiting as well as soft suede belted bombers – while Loose gauge degradé knitted jumpers are worn long under matching cardigans and paired with printed pleat shorts. And finally  the scoop neck sport shirts (offered in short cut or oversized) with simple, palindromic numbers on basic black, electric blue, pink are casual enough for lazing but versatile enough to turn into something more special. We love.
