The aircraft that serves as the inspiration behind Rimowa’s iconic luggage — the JU 52 for you airplane aficionados—landed just outside of New York City last night after a 92-hour journey from its home in Germany (No, it did not fly direct). And who is Rimowa, the inventors of the first aluminum and then later, polycarbonate luggage, to let the arrival of their muse go uncelebrated? To fête, they held an exclusive dinner inside a hangar at the White Plains (West Chester) Airport, replete with candles, live band and Dacquoise (we learned—a French cake made with layers of almond and hazelnut meringue and whipped cream). Also two people named Alessandra Ambrosio and Joe Manganiello. As we ate said french pastry, it dawned on us that our celebrity hosts actually made complete sense. Alessanda Abrosio, of Victoria’s Secret model fame, is luxuriantly beautiful and lightweight (seriously, before leaving, we saw the chair she was sitting in smiling big) and no one is stronger than Joe Manganiello of True Blood (and Essential Homme Cover Man). Having the two together to welcome the plane that started it all for Rimowa was perfect!
