WizELEVEN

Keeping up with Khalifa

Wiz Khalifa appears to be having the best summer ever. The heavily-tatted Atlantic Records rapper is bringing in record numbers as the headliner in the third installment of his ‘Under the Influence of Music’ tour, his name continues to be mentioned in conversations of personal style and hip-hop, and each week seems to bring on a new leaked track from the five-time Grammy nominee’s highly-anticipated album Blacc Hollywoodwhich officially drops today. “I wouldn’t say that the album is different [from previous releases] because I always like to make consistent music,” Khalifa explains over the phone from his tour’s kick-off city of Scranton, Pennsylvania. “It’s just this time I expanded my mind and  capabilities by working with different writers such as Rico Love and Detail.”

And the musician is no stranger to having to expand his mind, having grown up only miles away in the rough inner-city neighborhoods of Pittsburg. “[It] was a rough place. There weren’t too many opportunities,” he says. “We didn’t have many celebrities that we could look up to… all my inspiration musically and creatively came from outside the city.” It was across-the-country influencers like West coast rapper Snoop Dogg, as well as Ohio-based hip-hop group Bone Thugs-n-Harmony that Khalifa credits for helping to shape his childhood and desire to rap. Now with his fifth studio album finally available today, Khalifa is not only conquering the music world and leading the ever-expanding Pittsburgh rap movement, but he has also become quite a key-player in fashion. Collaborations ranging from a capsule collection from his own entertainment label, Taylor Gang, with the lifestyle clothing brand Neff, a customized footwear collection for Converse, and—most recently—a venture with edgy-French-label Eleven Paris have successfully married the worlds of hip-hop and couture.

I’m inspired by people who are free, who have fun and do new things.

“The Eleven Paris collaboration was a really cool thing to be a part of because of how cool the brand is,” Khalifa explains. “They have done collabs with Lil Wayne and Obama, and said mine was the most popular. So when it came to the new line, they got me and Kate Moss and shot it with Terry Richardson in Paris and it came out to be dope,” the rapper continues. “I see people wearing the clothes all the time and it’s really a good look for me.” Perhaps it’s Khalifa’s trend-setting style and gravitation towards fashion forward labels like KTZ and Brian Lichtenberg that has caused the fashion world to come knocking. “I’m inspired by people who are free, who have fun and do new things,” Khalifa says. “Whether it’s someone from the past—like Marvin Gaye or rock and roll icons like Kurt Cobain—I take little pieces of personalities that are similar to me and express them through my clothes, movements, and visuals.”

It’s Khalifa’s gritty and electrifying form of self-expression—undoubtedly fueled by his love for a particular mood altering substance—that keeps his fans jamming out to his stoner-life infused music. Although the rapper has gained popularity for being candid about his marijuana use (he has his own strain and sponsorship), more importantly, it is his ability to make music you can’t help but nod your head to that will surely keep Khalifa in constant playlist rotation.

Lea Michele

Lea Michele Posed for Uncle Terry

Actress Lea Michele might play good girl Rachel Berry on the once a hit, now a ‘is-that-still-on?’ series Glee, but the real life Michele is certainly not. And to prove it, she called up longtime purveyor of bad girls, Terry Richardson, and arranged a V Magazine photoshoot (disclosure: that’s not at all what happened).

From the looks of the three behind-the-scenes images shared by Michele on Instagram, she’s got hip bones on the mind…a bit tame for Richardson standards But, appropriately in-line with Michele’s image, perhaps that was the point? She’s edgy… not over the edge. You decide by checking out her feature “Lea The Brave” in V88: The Music Issue. Either way, we still have the lead single “Cannonball (off her upcoming debut album due Friday) on heavy rotation.

Terry Richardson Shoots Jared Leto’s Armpit, Other Appendages

tumblr_mz78bmU6WT1qa42jro1_500

Jared Leto and photographer Terry Richardson have been hanging out a lot recently, like a-lot-a-lot, and where there’s Uncle Terry, there’s a camera (and where there’s a photo, there’s the internet, and then here we all are). Jordan Catalano Leto, fresh off his win at the Golden Globes Awards on Sunday, is currently in Tulum, Mexico, where he posed for his buddy in the bathroom, shower, and pretty much every other random place in the city. Bizarre, yes. Unexpected, meh. Entertaining, assuredly. There’s not a whole lot to say about these, just a whole lot to see. Go ahead:

Lady Gaga Releases Cover Art for Upcoming Lead Single

The road to Gaga continues to grow shorter and shorter as the famed singer readies the release of her third studio LP, ARTPOP. The album, which will be available in physical and digital forms as well as an application developed her her own team, dubbed TechHaus, was given in an official release date November 11, 2013. In a statement, The Haus of Gaga revealed, “The app itself is a musical and visual engineering system that combines music, art, fashion, and technology with a new interactive worldwide community – “the auras”. Altering the human experience with social media, we bring ART culture into POP in a reverse Warholian expedition.” Gleen from that what (little) you will.

The Haus of Gaga has a slew of collaborators tied to the project including Gaga’s pal and frequent collaborator, Terry Richardson, said to be working on a documentary chronicling the creation of ARTPOP. Additionally, Dutch fashion photographer duo Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin, avant-garde stage director Robert Wilson, performance artist Marina Abramović, and artist Jeff Koons are all listed as contributors to an event Gaga herself will host on November 10th, titled artRave in conjunction with the album.

Gaga is currently readying to launch the album’s first single, Applause, at this year’s MTV Video Music Awards on August 25th at Barclay’s Center in Brooklyn, NY. On July 26th, the singer released a promo image for the single:

MANGO_Presentación Andrés Velencoso

H.E. by Mango—Now with Andrés Velencoso and Actually….

Pressy stuff out of the way first. H.E. by Mango has just launched their Spring 2013 campaign starring one of the top 10 most iconic male models in the world—Andrés Velencoso. Briefly, Velencoso’s career blew up back in 2003 when he starred alongside Jennifer Lopez in a bunch of Louis Vuitton ads and has gone on to be the leading man for brands like Banana Republic, Trussardi, Chanel, Etro, Gaultier, Ermenegildo Zegna, Elie Tahari and has been shot by Karl Lagerfeld and Terry Richardson. So, really, nice job H.E by Mango! You’ve got our attention! And good thing, because, actually, we’re guilty of not really knowing much about the brand other than their Spanish nationality. Perdóname. Because, you know, they’ve got some great on-trend pieces for prices so low they could be turned in to sod and made to grow flowers.  It’s in-between-season time right now, so know this—from Fall, there’s a gorgeous cropped double-breasted quilted jacket still around for just $70 bucks (in size small only) and some good suit jackets/ blazers starting at just $45 (and this one for $50). Spring’s just starting to trickle in, and you can bet we’ll be keeping an eye on the kinds of style quenching droplets you can, er, use to water your wardrobe. Check the campaign after the jump.

Travel: Brazil's Sergio K—A Terry Richardson Video and The Spring 2013 Collection

Travel: Brazil's Sergio K—A Terry Richardson Video and The Spring 2013 Collection

Sergio K is kind of a big deal down in South America where his casual polos, blazers, button ups, hoodies, shorts, swim trunks and slim fitting trousers are a mark of Brazilian-guy Style. Actually, you can only get Sergio K in Brazil (Sao Paulo, Brasilia and some other towns mostly) where he’s got a small chain of stores that, in addition to selling his own namesake brand, also carries labels like Comme Des Garçons and Mainsai. Sergio, who is actually a descendant of Armenians, got his start back in 2004 as a shoe maker but quickly expanded into a full fledged fashion line and retailer. Anyway, we have Terry Richardson and Tony Ward (you know, the ex-porn star-model that Madonna used to date back in the 20th century) to thank for putting him our radar—check out the punky, Terry-meets-Brazilian-beachy vibes video they shot for the Sergio K Spring 2013 collection. After, peruse the look book and then dream about vacationing in Brazil where you can actually go check out the store.
