A Brief History of Judy Blame, the Man Who Inspired Dior Men FW20

In his latest collection for Dior Men Fall/Winter 2020, Kim Jones paid tribute to the late stylist, designer, and general fashion renegade Judy Blame. Since he landed at the label in 2018, Jones has partnered with a roster of significant artists and tastemakers, from Raymond Pettibon to Shawn Stussy, with Blame being the latest to leave a mark in the designer’s catalog. The pair had a longstanding friendship (Jones was 16 when he first met the stylist) that eventually resulted in a collaboration during Jones’ time at Louis Vuitton in 2015.

Blame was a creative who ended up as one of the most enduring figures in the British fashion scene. “Thanks to some miracle I still can’t explain, I managed to survive all these different periods, punk, new romantic, rave… I think maybe that’s why people look at me with such admiration,” he told Numero magazine. Born in Devon, England, Blame moved to London in his early teens and thrived in the city’s blossoming punk scene, embracing its DIY culture. He started making jewelry to wear to various club nights out of unorthodox materials, everything from keys, buttons, general rubbish, and bones. “Punk rock – that was my training,” he told Another Man. He quickly became a nightlife fixture in the ’80s club scene, alongside legendary club kid Leigh Bowery, and it didn’t take long before other people started asking him to make them jewelry. The fashion world soon took notice.

He was responsible for helping curate the British look of the ’80s and ’90s during his time as a stylist for The Face and i-D magazines. This evolved into major collaborations with designers like Rei Kawakubo, Marc Jacobs, and John Galliano and artists as recognized for their looks as they are their music like Boy George, Kylie Minogue, and Björk. His work continued to translate into the 21st century and was celebrated with a retrospective exhibition, Judy Blame: Never Again and Artistic Differences, at the Institute of Contemporary Arts in London in 2016. Blame passed away from cancer at 58 in 2018, but his fearless design-savvy and unconventional approach continue to inspire a new generation of creative iconoclasts.

The Flowers for Dior Fall 2020 Were Actually Groundbreaking

Last December, Dior presented its first Pre-Fall men’s collection in Japan. It was one of the earliest presentations by then-newly appointed men’s creative director Kim Jones, who seamlessly fused his current street savvy with the designer’s legacy and founder Christian Dior’s relationship with the country. It was, in short, revelatory, and showed that the future of Dior was in good hands. A year later, the designer staged its presentation in Miami as an unofficial prelude to Art Basel. But instead of another futuristic approach — a themed that was emphasized with its Fall ’19 show which featured robot-like models staged on an oversize conveyor belt — Dior went full-on retro.

One of the more highly anticipated parts of the presentation was the reveal of the collab with Shawn Stussy, founder of the beloved California streetwear brand Stussy. There was a clear novelty approach to the collaboration — each played off each other which added some cheekiness to the historic French label.

Other niche influences were peppered throughout the collection. Throughout the logomania — and there was a lot featured on oversized sweaters, saddlebags, and more — Dior seemed to be paying homage to the aesthetics Deee-Lite, the forgotten pop group from the early ‘90s that achieved worldwide fame with the infectious “Groove is in the Heart.” Additionally, wearable florals seem to be one of the year’s biggest runway trends (also seen at Louis Vuitton’s Spring ’20 show) and the designer added its own spin with a fresh take on some tropical flower types that ornamented a range of suits. Each embellishment was handmade with fabric and equipped with wire so that they could be positioned into a variety of arrangements. Additional fabric pressing gave the petals the realistic vein definition, further showing the level of detail and craft that went into the presentation.

Dior Announces Collab with Stussy

Kim Jones has teased another designer pivot to streetwear, this time between Dior and California-based brand Stussy. Jones was one of the vanguards that helped bridge the worlds of luxury and streetwear back in 2017, while still working as artistic director for Louis Vuitton he launched a hugely successful collaboration with Supreme. Even though he’s moved to a different label, it’s likely that the new collab will be met with similar enthusiasm.

Little is known about the collection so far, but according to NSS magazine the range will include a white cap with a new customized logo, a grey-and-blue bandana-inspired tee, and a graphic t-shirt with a picture of Jones that reads “I Want to Shock the World With Dior.” All this is pure speculation at this point (though the t-shirt sounds iconic), but the collection is rumored to make its debut during the Dior Pre-Fall 2020 men’s show in Miami as part of Art Basel on December 3. Until then.

WOOLRICH

Woolrich and Stüssy Released the Perfect Fall Shirt

WOOLRICH partnered with Laguna Beach-based skate brand Stüssy to create the perfect cold weather, wool plaid shirt. Made from American wool, for extra softness and coziness, the black and green shirt also features Dupont Tactel Lining for extra insulation. Whether used for a late-autumn walk on the beach, as done in the accompanying campaign, or just a simple daytime piece, the seasonal piece is versatile in ways that go beyond fall layering. As plaids continue to take over for fall, consider a warm all-American fit for the season.

The WOOLRICH x Stüssy collection will be available in select stores on November 1.

Skater-favorite brand Stüssy continues its series of collabs, this time teaming up with Carhartt Work in Progress (WIP) for a highly anticipated capsule, timed smartly with the latter’s 25th anniversary. Reworking Carhartt’s worker-turned-streetwear pieces with bright new colorways, the project salutes underground culture with both brands’ core products in cool shades of cyan and worn deep navy. Featuring fitted canvas outerwear, vibrants hats, and monochromatic pants, the Carhartt WIP x Stüssy collection is available online now.

What better way for Stüssy to celebrate its 35th anniversary than by collaborating with one of the brands whose vision and culture has inspired it along the way: Fred Perry, the first British heritage label to cross over from sportswear to streetwear in the ’50s. The two clothiers celebrate classic sportswear at its best, offering a new collection using both the Fred Perry B50 Laurel Wreath logo and the SS-Link logo of Stüssy in key fall essentials, which include two full-length tracksuits in mahogany and navy, a white short sleeve polo shirt, and a two-toned long sleeve pique shirt with white and navy panels. Throughout the collection there’s a repeating pattern alongside the sleeves and pant legs with both iconic logos shown. The capsule flawlessly executes the classic sportswear look with a modern flair for the coolest guy on the block.

Fred Perry x Stüssy 35 is now available online.

Portage: Stüssy + Herschel Supply Aloha Collection

http://shop.herschelsupply.com/shop.html?collections=Stussy

Feeling warm sand rub on your feet is one of the most hallowed moments of any beachy vacation…but having that same sand coat the bottom of whatever bag you’ve taken is probably the most annoying….especially when weeks, months, years later it’s still there, even after you’ve emptied the bag, turned it inside out and sent it though the wash. A handsome way to help is the new Spring 2013 Aloha Collection, a collaboration between Stüssy and Herschel Supply, that features a fully drainable range of backpacks ($75), duffles ($88) and, for the ladies, tote bags ($81). The bags come in navy, black and beige/cream accompanied with a few, small metal lined, mesh holes along the bottom so that sand stays where it belongs.

THAT'S CORRECT: CONVERSE + STüSSY

The very naughty person who leaked information about the first ever collaboration between Converse and Stüssy may still be at large (worry not, we’ve alerted the fashion police) but it turns out that whoever it was didn’t (quelle surprise) get their facts right—as in wrong styles and wrong prices. We love them both but The ELM LS ekes out the others by a hair as our fave—a beautiful sneaker-y take on the popular red-laced hiking boot that even uses D-ring eyelets and premium boot leather. The Sea Star LS, inspired by vintage military jackets, would however, not be kicked out of bed. They hit the shelves on May 1st and the ELM will retail for $85 and the Sea Star for $75.

Stussy Deluxe + BLK Pine: For Totes.

A tote bag isn’t something normally thought of as chic. Rather, they’re what you bring to the supermarket when you feel like being green…or what you bring to the beach when you don’t want to get sand in your regularly featured bag. Stussy Deluxe with new partner, Seattle-based BLK Pine Workshop have recently released a limited edition tote that may have you rethinking the merits of this oft-disregarded category of men’s bag.

The totes are thoughtfully constructed for men’s rough and tumble use with heavyweight 18 oz duck canvas with vegetable tanned, natural leather handles and snap close to avoid any unwanted spillage. The goal of both brands was to have you consider the tote in the same manner as you would your favorite pair of jeans—spot clean them (to rid unsightly stains) and let the look develop with any natural wear and tear you bring upon them yourself. They come in two colors—black canvas with nice red nylon interior and matching nylon shoulder strap, as well as in natural canvas with a royal blue interior.

The bags are available as of now ($130-$140) on stussy.com

Stussy Deluxe X Dr. Martens Hambleton II

Iconic grunge era street brands Dr. Martens and Stussy have teamed up to produce a contemporary shoe perfect for the Spring 2012 season. Taking cues from the popular moccasin trend, the shoe is more or less an updated version of both brand’s 2011 collaboration called the Hambleton. This time around, the shoe has been constructed from soft and subtle hi suede and is fully lined in leather (as opposed the original’s canvas one). Coming in three color ways (charcoal, navy and tan) try pairing the Hambleton II with your baggy summer denim.

Available March 2012 for $200 at select Dr. Martens and Stussy stores worldwide.
