“There’s a burgundy one too,” says Joseph Abboud creative director Bernardo Rojo, talking about the green pony hair moto jacket that everyone in the room seemed to be marveling over, “It is my first collection with the material.” Since Joseph Abboud showed Fall 2013 at Pitti in Italy—along with his new, higher priced point, Red Label—last night in New York we were treated to a more intimate affair in his showroom. Executed on mannequins and hangars, we had the chance to feel the quality of the fabric and see up close the detail of each piece. Good thing since for Red Label, Rojo partnered with one of the top Italian manufacturing companies, Cipriani SPA, and found a new level of freedom. “I got to play with all of these new fabrics that we can’t use for the regular line because of price.” So. The emphasis was on the here-and-now technical, and the vibe was mid-sixties jet-setter—a matte rubberized overcoat snapped away at just below the waist and lightweight leather bags that felt like neoprene to the touch. And of course, Abboud’s take on classic American, here reformatted for the internet age—ribbed collar flight jackets, heavy gage cable knit pullovers and the rounded shades. Rojo smiles when he talks about encouraging his American fans to experiment with clothing, wear a new fabric, try a different style or an unusual texture.  “People say American design doesn’t change. American’s have a lot of style, it was just forgotten. We want to help it grow.” See just how, after the jump.

“It’s about looking back to the old glamour of American style and modernizing it. Taking inspiration from yesterday’s icons but bringing something completely new. I believe that design is a mode of expressing individuality, not suppressing it, and this collection leaves room for tomorrow’s icons to be made,” says Joseph Abboud creative director Bernardo Rojo of the beautifully shot Spring 2013 ad campaign that’s just rolling out now. The Spring/Summer 2013 Campaign photo shoot took place in L.A. to coincide with the collection’s inspiration. Visual artist Nicholas Alan Cope is presented, as part of the on-going series of self-made American men. (View his film about Los Angeles on Josephabboud.com). Inspired by the light in California, artist Nicholas Alan Cope moved to Los Angeles in 2004 to study photography. His early work focused on the essential components of L.A.’s architecture and landscape and ultimately inspired Nicholas’ first-ever video piece, which he created exclusively for Joseph Abboud. Nicholas says, “I wanted to shoot L.A. in a new way, for me and for others… it’s a place where you make your own city within in a city.” To capture his unique view, Nicholas took cues from nature films and used innovative filming techniques to create a film that offers a look at Los Angeles as a living breathing landscape, as seen through the lens of a self-made artist. Joseph Abboud Spring Summer 2013 Models Backstage

There’s a lot of words that can be used to describe the Joseph Abboud Spring 2013 collection. Some of them are: chic, elegant, active, irreverent, American, and colorful. But at the risk of sounding simple (which isn’t really an awful thing when its the truth) and also at the peril of ripping off Barack Obama, the one word that surmises it all is, forward. The collection dares men to continue to explore different cuts, shapes, colors and fabrications that’ve been used in the past but crafted and styled in new ways for the now. It’s the second time on the runway for Joseph Abboud designer Bernardo Rojo who says, “It’s about looking back to the old glamour of American style and modernizing it.” That translates into looks that are at once loose, voluminous and confident. The colors are bold (there are both beautiful fully pink and yellow 2-button casual, unconstructed  suits and a patent leather car jacket) as well as the candy striped western shirt (maybe the new print?) and there are key style pieces for the season such as the gorgeous double breasted notch jersey jacket and plenty of high wasted, pleated trousers. JOSEPH ABBOUD FALL 2012 CAMPAIGN: ART DECO, HOLLYWOOD STYLE

Joseph Abboud Fall 2012 Ad Campaign

The images in Joseph Abboud’s Fall 2012 campaign frame the collection’s 1930’s era inspirations (think graceful, art deco, steel structures) in the image of classic Hollywood style. But, they also place the spotlight squarely on two men who have successfully defined modern day filmmaking. Both Jay Bulger and Ben Fee have taken the kind of risks in their careers that embody the Joseph Abboud man and harken back to the collection’s 1930’s roots—a time when industriousness and ingenuity gave way to long-lasting elegant new forms of art and architecture. Bulger left his life as a Boxer and went renegade documentarian, tracking down Cream drummer Ginger Baker in South Africa, claiming he was a writer from Rolling Stone (which he wasn’t) only to land a story in said magazine and an award winning documentary about the experience. Fee apprenticed with Hunter S. Thompson and has gone on to make a storied career highlighting extreme sports. The selection is a fitting way to link the collection’s historic references to the modern world and, of course, it doesn’t hurt that both make excellent models. The campaign will drop this September.

Joseph Abboud and Nordstrom bring Made-to-Measure to the iPad

Joseph Abboud can be credited with more than just refined tailored clothing with the introduction of its Made-to-Measure app for the iPad. Indeed, Joseph Abboud is also about refining and improving how shopping is done. In conjunction with partner Nordstrom, the app allows you to browse a full range of fabrics, styles and silhouettes as well as to create a completely personalized look by mixing and matching details like lapels, pockets and vents. The app will directly send your order to their factory, sparing everyone the slow drum of a middle man, and holds on to a record of what you’ve created, in turn, helping you to refine your own look.
