Michael Bastian Spring 2013: Love to Love You Baby

Michael Bastian Spring 2013: Love to Love You Baby

Here’s the thing about Michael Bastian—he makes collections that appeal to both the discerning follower of fashion and to the guy who probably has no clue. Meaning, Bastian is a master at retooling classic pieces in ways that keep things fresh but that most guys’ll feel pretty comfortable wearing. For Spring 2013, Bastian appeared to have some fun with his skills, pushing his taste to the shores of late ’70s/early ’80s Fire Island—there’s even a Donna Summer ‘Love to Love You Baby’ 1981 Concert T-shirt among the cast of  knits, polos, shorty shorts, speedos, linen suits and rugbys, which appear here, to have been amplified through Fire Island’s seductive point of view—lots of leg and chest. Says Michel Bastian, “This season originally started out six months ago primarily inspired by the palette of American Color Field painter Helen Frankenthaler, but then took some interesting turns along the way. We took a left turn and ended up in the late ’70s at a modernist beach house on Fire Island.” Bastian also offered original takes on some trends that’ve been happening—The deep blue linen double breasted blazer was suave with its two horizontal buttons and the quilted vest made an island-like nod with its wave-like pattern. Other stand outs include the gorgeously color blocked blue, green and pink button up, the yellow patterned bags and the blue, thick gauge knit cardigan. Is the collection still preppy. You bet. But this time, you can also add a healthy dose of sexy.
