Death Comes Alive with Damien Hirst and Alexander McQueen

McQueen x Hirst

The image of the human skull is as much jarring as it is a sign of life. Cyclical and hallowed out, it is this unique shape that set us apart from other species. An elevated quality of life—if you will, but when exposed, the skull implies a loss of life; death. Arguably one of contemporary artist Damien Hirst’s most public works, For the Love of God (2007), exploits this juxtaposition through an 18th century-style human skull cast in platinum and encrusted 8,601 flawless diamonds. Four years before this, Alexander McQueen debuted his infamous re-appropriation of the skull as a scarf in his 2003 Spring/Summer collection Irene. Now, ten years after his runway, these two forces have come together to present a thirty-scarf capsule collection utilizing aspects of Hirst’s Entomology series and playing off the natural elements in each artists’ brand aesthetic.

The scarves are available in Chiffon, Pongé, Twill and Cashmere with prices ranging from $515 to $1175  at Alexander McQueen stores worldwide and online.

Domingo Zapata 11 Minutes New York

And Now, Some Art: Domingo Zapata 11 Minutes

Domingo Zapata 11 Minutes New York

Domingo Zapata’s prolific career, spanning the past two decades, reads like a luxe laundry list of achievements.  Just take the last few months: His latest mural was permanently displayed in the W South Beach lobby in the same week that a star-studded event at Art Basel Miami revealed his collection “The Love of My Life is in Paris.”  Dial the time-turner back, say, twenty years, and you’ll journey through a career that includes the creation of his signature “Polo” series, heavyweight collectors like Damien Hirst, Johnny Depp, and Carmelo Anthony (not to mention his recent outings with tabloid prodigy LiLo), and — wait for it — co-writing lyrics for a little ditty you’ve certainly booped to called “The Macarena.”  Hunker back down in your fancy new time-turner and press the dial that says ‘Last Week,’ where beauty, sexuality, and power were on display at the opening of his latest collection, “11 Minutes,” inspired by Brazilian writer Paulo’ Coelho’s 2003 novel.  The triggers of human obsession were exhibited throughout the three-story pop-up gallery in Soho — former sight of Tommy Hillfiger’s renowned boutique — at the opening event hosted by Cipriani Downtown.  Translation: Cipriani Bellinis, yes please and thank you!  Guests included actress Jessica White, model Frederique van der Wal, photographer Antoine Verglas, and a slew of Zapata enthusiasts from around the world, who ‘werqed’ their way through images of rhinos, matadors, and kaleidoscopic gypsies.  The show will be on display and open to the public at its current location (376 West Broadway) from now until April 5th, 2013. For more information on Domingo Zapata and his latest exhibitions please visit www.dzapata.com.

DAMIEN HIRST ORIGINAL SPIN PAINTING

ART: DAMIEN HIRST IN A LONDON BURGER KING

DAMIEN HIRST ORIGINAL SPIN PAINTING

Have some art with your fries. Damien Hirst wants you to. The man who made history as the first living artist to have an entire collection of art sold at Sotheby’s (Beautiful Inside My Head Forever, 2008) has given the Burger King over in Leicester Square London his 2003 painting entitled, Beautiful Psychedelic Gherkin Exploding Tomato Sauce All Over Your Face, Flame Grilled Painting. Well, that’s one whopper of a name, isn’t it.
