Byredo’s New LA Store is a Work of Art

For its first store in Los Angeles — and largest ever — Byredo pulled out all the stops. The Swedish lifestyle brand settled on Melrose Avenue for its newest boutique which opened as during Frieze LA. With a picturesque minimal interior, the new store is a piece of art itself.

Byredo’s founder and creative director Ben Gorham worked closely with the Swedish architecture firm Halleroed to create a serene atmosphere. Combining elements of Scandinavian minimalism with a West Coast cool, which the brand refers to as ‘warm Modernism’ in a statement, the airy interior manages to effortlessly marry the visual appeal of an art gallery with the comfort of someone’s house on the hills. Natural materials like hard oak, elder, and American walnut are used alongside aluminum metal accents with pops of color to fully achieve this rustic-industrial effect. In addition to carrying the brand’s popular candles, scents, and other items, the store will also showcase artwork from a roster of artists and collaborators, and host a variety of events to further establish a sense of community.

Byredo is open now at 8920 Melrose Avenue, Los Angeles CA 90069.

Byredo founder Ben Gorham and Off-White designer Virgil Abloh collaborated on Elevator Music, a unique capsule collection of fragrances, denim, T-shirts, and other accessories. Inspired by the studies of Swedish scientist Gunnar Johansson, whose work defined the framework of human movement perception, the capsule was first exhibited in Paris in a commissioned installation titled “The Elevator” by the artist Carsten Höller, who also found inspiration in the works of Johansson. Gorham and Abloh manage the impossible with Elevator Music: a balance between lofty inspiration and a practical, stylish, and accomplished aesthetic that works in any environment.

$990-1,660, available at Barneys New York and Byredo.com.

Go Behind the Scenes of FRAME x Ben Gorham’s Capsule Collection

Heritage denim purveyor FRAME has made a name for itself in straddling two distinct realms—American-made product and a European sense of style. Reworking this best-of-both-worlds mentality into a more condensed and refocused vision, the young brand partners with aromatic savant Ben Gorham, of Byredo fame, to bring his first ever ready-to-wear collection to life. A startling metamorphosis, Gorham’s vein of simple composition and quality details attempts a bold translation from stoppered bottle to runway catwalk in this adamant, manifest destiny release. Bearing a not-so-subtle moniker—”Away From His Hands,” a wink at its creator’s ravenous take-it-and-run-wild fanbase—the line is functionally evolved, a rodeo-ready ethos grounded in a reticent youth’s mentality.

Tapping Peruvian-born artist and “Round Whippin'” crooner A.CHAL to lend his ethereal image to the campaign, the Torstensson-lensed prints inherit a similar dissonant space as its artists’ multi-genre, spillover style. The pieces, western in execution with just a hint of Byredo’s memorial nostalgia, cherry-pick the best of the American subculture—reworked cattle branding symbols, bull-riding methodology, solitary seclusion—to transpire cowboy influences into cleverly distressed patchwork denim, aged leather vests, and tees drenched in a hardened vintage.
