Watch Andre 3000 in New Jimi Hendrix Biopic
Andre Benjamin (a.k.a Andre 3000) stars as rock-guitar-legend Jimi Hendrix in the upcoming Jimi: All Is by My Side, a movie that tells the story of Hendrix’s life leading up to a game-changing concert in London. In the just-released trailer below, the Outkast member—who now focuses more on his solo music career—masters the late icon’s speaking voice and laissez faire demeanor while rocking the butterfly collars and psychedelic prints of the 1960’s. The biopic, which was written and directed by John Ridley (12 Years a Slave) won’t include any of Hendrix’s original musical arrangements though, due to his estate not being on board. Instead, the Atlanta-born rapper-singer will perform covers of the rock star’s classics, which are sure to lend a fresh sound to some already epic songs. The film debuts in the U.S. on March 12 at SXSW, and although we don’t get to hear the original Hendrix, there seems to be plenty of sex, drugs, and rock and roll to go around…with a little guitar eating thrown in for good measure.
