Raf Simons x Fred Perry Spring/Summer 2016

Joining forces for both brand’s on-going, collaborative line, Raf Simons and Fred Perry present their Spring/Summer 2016 collection, with the Belgian designer taking a European Modernist approach to add his signature flair to a number of the athletic clothier’s staples. Inspired by the many subcultures that have incorporated the classic Fred Perry shirt into each’s wardrobe, Simons applied modern art influences and bold colors on to T-shirts, zip front pique shirts, sweatshirts, and a unique bomber jacket.

A departure from last season, which focused on darker hues accented with pastel trim and geometric motifs, the new pieces are lighter, with liberal use of white and sky blue. Utilizing a diagonal pattern with powdery secondary colors, the traditionally minimal pieces are given new life via loud colors and smart color-blocking. The mood feels more athletic, the knit sweaters and button ups of last season abandoned in favor of sweats and tees. For the first time in the now-13 collections, the collaboration explores playing with proportions via a dropped neck t-shirt. Moving from a tailored to a more boxy fit the Chevron Insert T-Shirt—available in both black and white—sits wider on the body, creating an entirely new silhouette.

Raf Simons x Fred Perry Autumn/Winter 2015

Uniforms urged by youth, Raf Simons‘ 12th collaboration with sportswear brand Fred Perry continues the designer’s deconstructive experiment, playing with—and often times against—the heritage brand’s aesthetic. For Autumn/Winter 2015, the newest Raf Simons x Fred Perry capsule sees bold necklines accented by color blocked collars, unconventional fabrics, and zip-up lengths, which underneath clean and sharp silhouettes sit. It’s a mix of vivid modernism with Simons’ fondness for nostalgia that unite to form neon contrasting and monochromatic subcultural styles. “The challenge is exactly the fact that Fred Perry has a very distinctive heritage and identity,” the designer said in a statement. “It is about respecting each other and working on collections that translate both brand’s natures and challenge each other.”

This season marks the 11th collaboration between visionary Raf Simons and the long-living sportswear label that is Fred Perry. Following the release of a video teaser for the Raf Simons x Fred Perry Spring 2015 collection, an editorial styled by Bodega shows a fresh new take on Raf Simons and emphasizes menswear’s roots in street fashion, tracing back to its first appearance at jazz clubs in Soho, London in the 1950s, to punk shows in the ’70s, two-tone and ska shows in the ’80s, and soccer stadiums in the ’90s. The pieces in this latest partnered collection are mostly monochromatic with abstract Africa-inspired forms that take shape in all-over prints. The slim-fit polos with detachable collars we have seen from the duo before are even slimmer and longer this time around. Known for referencing music subcultures in his designs, Raf Simons uses the label’s key shapes as a base to subvert the classic Fred Perry garment: the embroidered badge logos with an ‘R’ in a graphic form adorn woven and pique shirts that suggest the design of graphic album covers.

Raf Simons x Fred Perry Spring 2015 and Fred Perry is now available at Bodega and online.

For Spring, Let Love, Color, and Raf Simons x Fred Perry in

Video: Fred Perry.

While I’ll be the first to admit that I do not usually dabble with color—being that my general wardrobe readily falls somewhere between a Viktor & Rolf store and Swedish pop band Shout Out Louds (“black is the only color I know”)—I can say Raf Simons‘ latest collection for his collaboration with Fred Perry (now in its sixth year, hooray!) might have me considering other hues. Although to be completely candid, it should also be said that I would  follow the Belgium designer into the depths of the hell—or rather, the sale rack at Bloomingdale’s—if need be.

Using  the British classic three-button sports shirt as his canvas, this season Simons stuck with an ethos that he’s proved to have mastered in earlier collections and at Christian Dior, bringing saturated colors (warm, tangerine golds and grape juice purple), large scale pop-art graphics and smart lines to Fred Perry’s Laurel Wreath Series.

The full collection is available online now, and if the persian blue just ends up being *too much* for Spring—it’s fine, I get it!—fortunately there’s a similar option in the comforting contrast of black and white.
