Public School Fall 2013: Polished Deconstruction

Public School Fall 2013 Menswear Fashion Week Presentation

“We really wanted to explore technique with this collection,” says Public School co-founder Dao-Yi Chow. “The past two seasons set the tone for our silhouette and aesthetic, so we wanted to focus on developing new washes, embellishments and details that would help to define the Public School look. We looked at how the little traits of someone’s personality helped to define who they are and similarly tried to capture that with our garments.” So to add to their structured, downtown street edge, they worked new fabrics like wool blended knits and stretch skins into deconstructed yet polished pieces. Whereas a lot of their contemporaries were playing around with color blocking, Public School  stayed focused like a lazer beam on doing so with fabric, creating layered and texturized that read minimal and sleek. You’ll also note the shiny veneer on the model’s feet. The shoes are a collaboration between The Generic Man and Public School. After the jump…

Michael Bastian, who reliably turns out a well-executed collection of bright, breezy and boyish American classics, pretty much shocked everyone with the forest of dark, moody pieces he sent down the runway for Fall 2013. What we learned form this collection is that there is more to Bastian than he’s been letting on. He’s got a dark side, filled with leather straps, black feathers and wolves. Venturing outside the comfort zone, it would be easy for a designer to stumble. Rather Bastian conquered and in the process opened his brand up to more than a few new customers.

J.Press York Street Fall 2013: Ivy League Sport and Hunting Lodge

J.Press York Street Fall 2013 Presentation Explorers Club Fashion Week New York Menswear Shimon Ovadia models buy sale price purchase

A bold combo of classic football and hunting filtered through J.Press York Street’s vision of Ivy League style served as the focus of the J.Press Fall 2013 collection. Creative Directors Ariel and Shimon Ovadia (who you may know from their work at Ovadia & Sons) crafted football looks that went early 1900s, with the young players uniformed in matching wool turtleneck sweaters and some dressier suiting for a more polished look off the field. The hunting line has a relaxed, outdoorsy feel, and includes traditional cold-weather fabrics like rugged cotton camouflage and moleskin and fishnet pocket accents. Also some news—just after the show, J.Press York Street opened up they’re first ever flagship at 304 Bleeker Street in New York City. The looks, post jump.

Rochambeau Fall 2013: Future Mafioso

Rochambeau Fall 2013 Menswear Fashion Week New York Milk Presentation

The Rochambeau man has always hung out in edgy places and this season they’ve taken him into the seedy and glamorous world of future-darkwave-mobster. The effect is a cool combination of robust masculinity with boundry pushing proportion. The camel work coat and utility pants take it a little hip hop, the rusted gold overcoat replete with oversized hood and the animal print sweater could go in plenty of directions and the oversized puffer recalls the italian mafia world of yore.

Carlos Campos Fall 2013: Get Coated

Carlos Campos Fall 2013 Presentation New York Fashion Week Milk

Carlos Campos delivered a collection of some slick outerwear—vintage-y looking blue leather, maroon, grey and blueberry trenches, top coats and overcoats. His eye for color, on full display in his unforgettable monochromatic Spring 2013 collection, arrives in more moody colors, taunting us with distorted deep ocean blue, rich maroon, emerald, heather grey and at least one pattern using all together. The collection’s sharp, a bit tongue in cheek and well arranged.

Timo Weiland Fall 2013: Speak, Don't Shout

Timo Weiland Menswear Fall 2013 New York Fashion Week Presentation models

The Timo Weiland presentation marked the first time the designers have shown their men’s and women’s in different events. A presentation was a good choice, considering that Timo Weiland’s men’s might not jump out and grab you by the brain for the brief few seconds you see it on the runway. And that’s not necessarily a bad thing—For Timo Weiland it’s all about the small details and those are best experienced in more than 10 second intervals. After all  there is a place for men who appreciate designer style but who don’t necessarily want it to scream. Which is what this collection won’t do. It speaks. In a clear words, with modern vocabulary, in a suave tone of voice. There’s rarely more than two colors on one piece, texture is soft like a grey winter sky and cuts are relaxed and modern. In this collection, you’re running around town in between lunches with friends, meetings for business and prepared to bump into anyone who might just change your life. The collection after the jump.

In a word? Thrilling. In more words—Tommy Hilfiger’s Fall 2013 collection is the perfect creative expression of American style combined with British tradition. They’ve named the collection “Saville Row meets Ivy League,” but the totality of the collection is far more exciting than those generally anodyne subjects. Actually, Hilfiger took cues from Tommy Nutter—a one time Saville Row enfant terrible who shook things up a bit during the days of the Beatles and the Stones. The result is one of the most imaginative uses of classic British patterns that have ever walked the New York runway.

Billy Reid rocked out a bit with his Fall 2013 collection, revealing that southern charm may also come with elegant rebelliousness. Leather jackets are inside layers, silky fabrics are paired with woolen ones, orange and reds burst around beige and cream. You’ll also notice some sharp looking bags in the hands of the models. It’s ok if they draw your attention—they’re the first glimpses of the Fall 2013 limited edition collaboration between Coach and Billy Reid.

Lead

Kenneth Cole experiments with daring fabric alliances for Fall 2013. You’ll see exaggerated pairings like fleece on fleece, puffy on puffy but also some mixing and matching of unlikely friends—puffy with leather (is this a call for cross-taste tolerance?). There’s also cool bi-fabric creations, like a charcoal wool jacket with a shiny, white plasticized front panel. The collection skews towards the dark side—in color (midnight oil, plush obsidian, charcoal and some maroon and dark brown) and in vibe. The more casual looks read day to night, and the edgier ones are made for night into the twee hours of the morning…Definitely not bright and early. The show? Right this way…

Favorite Five: Lacoste Fall 2013

CoverLacoste sent models onto the runway though a multi paneled, white cube,  further delving into their spacey vision of the future—technical fabrications, elongated torsos and exaggerated collars. It was a collection with two distinct feelings. There were plenty of clinical looks with sharp lines, lots of creams and whites and at least one men’s rubber looking trench. There was also a bit of wistful romance. An oversized, ombre overcoat with a glacier print is perhaps a call to the here and now to do something about global warming and the gorgeous camo loops back to primitive times with a few hidden petroglyphs.

Edun rolled out a collection to entice those creatures of the night who also might be considered  globally conscious—ie, much of it was sourced and made in Africa. You’ll find a few shades of red—there’s a cool, vintage looking, pink hued biker, uniformly perforated  maroon over shirts and an over sized vermillion button up. There’s also a lot of black. Black sateen, black waxed denim, black leather, black knits. Looking for some guilt-free, late-night styling pieces? Edun’s got you.
