Prada Takes to Maui

A global hallmark of luxury, Prada moves to Maui, Hawaii to conquer a new domain in fashion. The fifth in the state, the new store is located within the prestigious The Shops at Wailea mall, joining its wondrous luxury section that carries the likes of Bottega Veneta, Louis Vuitton, Tiffany & Co., and more.

The construction of the space was executed by none other than architect Roberto Baciocchi, whose relationship with the label dates back to 1982, and has been responsible for all the commercial and corporate spaces for Prada Group brands—including Prada, Miu Miu, Church’s, and Car Shoes—since. Knowing all too well the aesthetic philosophy of the fashion house after decades of partnership, Baciocchi yet again creates a space that is unmistakably Prada. Boasting a succession of individualistic rooms, the space dedicated to men’s collections adopts the green fabric-clad walls with precious steel and crystal display cases as an innovative reinterpretation of the label’s iconic display niches. Polished steel and crystal displays run alongside the sumptuous details of the brand’s signature black-and-white marble, while colored saffiano leather and green velvet sofas finish the luxurious space that successfully reflects the fine goods that sit inside.

Always a hotspot for family fueled tourism and sun-soaked rom-coms, this season Honolulu has also emerged as one of the most coveted retail destinations on this side of the globe. Yesterday, July 30, 2014, Dior Homme—the French fashion house that leaves us seeing spots on a seasonal basis—opened the doors to its first stand-alone retail boutique in Hawaii at the T Galleria by DFS Waikiki in Honolulu. Joining the brand’s namesake, Christian Dior, as well as a recent wave of tropically-traveling boutiques, Dior Homme Waikiki offers ready-to-wear, footwear, eyewear, leather goods, watches, jewelry, and fragrance—in addition to a made-to-measure program available at special request—in a refined space that is as minimal yet mouthwatering as the pieces inside.

Maui Jim Releases Vintage-Style Frames for the Wanderer in Us All

Wanderer from Maui Jim 289-02

The 1961 hit song, “The Wanderer,” serves as the inspiration behind Maui Jim’s newest vintage style, appropriately given the same name. The light-weight eyepieces have a retro clip-on look and were crafted by the Hawaii-based sunglass crew with different face-shapes in mind to give them a unisex appeal—so keep your frames close to the face around any female companions.

The Wanderer arrives in three color options: a sleek, and light-blocking Glossy Black with Neutral Gray lenses—a great choice for late night parties that turn into early mornings, an understated Matte Espresso hue with Bronze lenses (seen on the left), and our personal favorite: the look-at-me Tokyo Tortoise print with Bronze lenses, which will go great against the sandy beaches of Waikiki this summer (wishful thinking!).

Maui Jim was born out of the classic supply and demand scenario in 1980, when the company first started selling sunglasses beachside in Lahaina, Hawaii. However it was the realization that their loyal crew of beach babes and surfer bros not only wanted to stun in their shades, but also needed some protection from the elements that has given them a cult following since.

Today, the Maui Jim wearer will not only notice color boosting properties in the lenses, but other features such as scratch resistant protection on both sides and UV ray blocking technology have set the brand apart for its ability to marry the necessity of fashion and function perfectly. Who doesn’t want a pair of sunnies that can multi-task for them?

The rectangular aviator frames of Wanderer are a classic throwback to the care-free, rolling stone– as in Papa was a– attitude of their  heyday; perfectly summed up in the lyrics from Dion’s opening chorus, ‘”They call me the wanderer, Yeah the wanderer, I roam around, around, around.”

Happy Lei Day! Hawaii Style, Then and Now

May 1st (whoa, that’s today!) is an official holiday in the great state of Hawaii. It’s called Lei Day and is when the island folk celebrate the iconic tropical garland  used to welcome visitors to their beautiful land. We’re honoring today with some inspirational and memorable moments in Hawaii films from yesteryear followed by our fave looks from the Spring 2012 Kenzo runway show in Paris which was, to say the least, a Hawaii-fantasy collection. Enjoy and happy Lei Day!

From Here to Eternity (1953)

Frank Sinatra
Even though Hawaiian Shirts had been around since the 1930’s, it wasn’t till Frank Sinatra donned one in this film that the printed button up became a full on fad.

Montgomery Cliff (with Donna Reed)

South Pacific (1958) (Which was filmed in Hawaii)

Rossano Brazzi
By ’58, things Hawaiian had gotten less flamboyant…

Cast
while becoming, uh, more flamboyant.

Donovan’s Reef (1963)

Lee Marvin
Hawaii was, er, kind of beat down by the the early ’60’s. But if you ignore this guy’s black eye, you have to admit that he’s donning an excellent nautical themed look. Oh, and never tie your button up like that. Ever.

Lee Marvin
Well, if you’re gonna go there…sometimes you just need to go there.

Blue Hawaii (1967)

Elvis Presley
Who doesn’t love a revival? Surely the people in 1967 didn’t mind the Hawaiian one brought on by this Elvis film.

And let us not forget who wore short shorts first.

And now something more modern thanks to Kenzo’s Spring 2012 Paris Runway show
