Gucci Hires Renée E. Tirado as Global Head of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion

Gucci, one of the most beloved and imaginative designers of our time, is not perfect. While the Italian label has used its platform for good in the past, like when it donated $500 thousand to the March for Our Lives and its recent Cruise 2020 show which featured a strong pro-choice theme throughout the presentation, it’s also had its fair share of controversy. Last summer, the designer was accused of cultural appropriation for selling a turban for $790. Earlier this year, the brand recalled a turtleneck sweater after the social media masses said it resembled blackface. They apologized almost immediately.

The designer released a statement saying “We consider diversity to be a fundamental value to be fully upheld, respected and at the forefront of every decision we make. We are fully committed to increasing diversity throughout our organization and turning this incident into a powerful learning moment for the Gucci team and beyond.” And it seems now that they’re following through by Renée E. Tirado as the first Global Head of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion for Gucci. In this new role, Tirado will develop and implement a global diversity strategy to ensure a stronger and healthier work environment.

“I am in the business of making human connections that start with the foundations of inclusivity, respect, and diversity to ensure Gucci remains culturally and economically competitive. I am honored to join a company that puts these non-negotiable values at the forefront of their business model, not as ‘a nice to have’ but as a key component of its business strategy,” Tirado said in a statement. “Diversity is on the agenda of many companies, but Gucci has now assumed a leadership role in the industry through the breadth of initiatives it is undertaking and the prioritization it has placed on it as a part of the overall business.”

This move is a promising step for the brand. The fashion industry as a whole has become much more democratic — there are more resources that let fans and consumers engage with (and call out) brands than ever before. By hiring Tirado, Gucci seems committed to helping influence the historically problematic industry by first reflecting on their own internal issues and seeing what can be changed there. It’s good to know they’re ready to do the work.

Lou Dalton Does Alternative Preppy for FW19

Breaking away from the traditional runway format — models of all ages were seated and posed beside large crates — Lou Dalton presented a collection of preppy pieces infused with his unconventional flair. Shirts and trousers were tie-dyed and washed out while scarves were oversized and exaggerated by dazzling patterns.

‘Crazy Rich Asians” Pierre Png on his Star Physique

pierre 1

Pierre Png is ripped. That’s just a fact — a fact that was made perfectly clear within the first 10 minutes of this summer’s breakout smash Crazy Rich Asianswhere he stars as a distant husband. (Go see it — it’s as good as everyone is saying.) We quickly caught up with the 44-year-old actor on how he got his star physique, the ‘old’ Singapore, and representation in film today.

The movie made Singapore look so lit. What are your favorite spots to visit when you’re there?
I have lived in Singapore all my life. The places I like to visit are not the usual shopping malls or the countless eateries that the country has to offer. I would rather grab my unicycle, take a ferry to the neighboring islands, and explore the ‘old’ Singapore!

Your toned physique is something that’s being praised in the film — can you talk a little bit on how you were able to develop that for the role?
Jon. M. Chu [the director] wanted me to get a six-pack as soon as he confirmed me for the role. Immediately, he engaged a personal trainer to help me achieve what he wanted for [his character] Michael Teo. I was put on a very strict no salt, no sugar, and no oil diet. Protein shakes to bulk up and lots of hard work! It’s wasn’t fun!!

Any interest in moving towards more action films? Is there a particular direction you’d like to see your career head towards now that you’ve got this recognition?
Most of my shows have required me to do some form of action sequences and I always do all of them myself. I’d definitely like to keep doing action scenes that are well choreographed, and to do more collaborations overseas.

This has been praised as the first major film with an all-Asian cast in over 20 years, how does it feel to be part of such a milestone?
It feels fantastic! Like many people, I grew up watching Hollywood movies and I’ve always wondered why are there so few Asian leads? And why are we always portrayed as some weird character that doesn’t make it past the second half of the movie? The timing couldn’t be better. The audience is hungry for something different. Kevin Kwan wrote a very funny and detailed book about his experience growing up with the rich in Asia, and just having a small part in the movie, playing a true blue Singaporean in my first Warner Brothers film is an experience I’ll never forget.

Front Row Shots at Louis Vuitton SS19

Virgil Abloh’s inaugural collection for Louis Vuitton was a statement in every sense — from gradient-rainbow runway design to the inclusive guest list, which featured roughly around 1000 students from local universities. While a few classic Abloh-isms were embedded in the collection, including monochromatic looks, a unifying political statement, and straightforward graphics, the presentation remained grounded in its global ethos and promised a strong future for the label at the helm of fashion’s most compelling figure. Photos by Alessandro Russo for Essential Homme.
