Daniel Arsham Has Made More Art for Dior

American artist Daniel Arsham continues his role as Dior‘s unofficial artist-in-residence with a limited-edition collection of art pieces. Arsham has worked fairly extensively with Kim Jones and the French label, helping with the designer’s Spring 2020 collection and pink set design and contributing pieces to the recently opened men’s store in SoHo.

The latest collaboration is a continuation of the pastel theme that dominated the spring show. The new art pieces include a sculpture of a Dior-branded telephone, basketball, and clock that appear to be disintegrating. There’s also a sculpture of Dior’s out-of-print 1951 book Je suis couturier and letter sculptures that spell out the designer’s name — these were originally seen at the aforementioned spring show but have been minimized and could probably find a second-life as suitable bookends.

There’s no word on a wide release of the Dior x Daniel Arsham artwork yet but prices are available upon request.

A Dior Men’s Store Just Opened in SoHo

A few weeks after Gucci opened its own men’s store next to its women’s shop in Beverly Hills, Dior seems to have followed suit on the east coast. Earlier this week, the French brand opened the doors to its first menswear store in New York in the heart of SoHo on Greene Street, next to its womenswear outpost.

The multi-level store puts Kim Jones’ vision of Dior Men front and center — frequent collaborator Daniel Arsham even designed a sculpture for the window display. Upon entry, customers can admire another piece of art by New York-based artist Yoon Hyup before perusing the brand’s extensive range of leather accessories (including different editions of the increasingly popular saddlebag) and walls stacked with the designer’s latest sneakers, from chunky to classic styles, and other footwear. Go a little further and browse the designer’s ready-to-wear pieces that line the walls of the well-lit boutique. Towards the rear of the store, a downward staircase leads to a semi-private VIP area where clients can receive additional styling assistance.

The Dior Men’s store is open now at 107 Greene St, New York, NY 10012. Take a look at some more pictures of the shop below.

See Dior’s Savoir-Faire Leather Technique for SS20

For the latest Dior collection, Kim Jones focused on exploring new leather techniques that merge traditional practices with new technology. The new hi-tech bonding process resulted in a smooth and surreal effect that was recalled the work of Daniel Arsham, who also collaborated with the designer.  The innovative material technique was applied to some key pieces from the Spring/Summer 2020 collection, including a range of monochromatic trench coats. Learn more about the leather process in the video below.

Daniel Arsham x Rimowa Make Suitcase Art

Making its debut at Frieze New York, Rimowa resurrected a classic piece from its archive with the help of artist Daniel Arsham. Based on retro camera cases, the pair worked on a sculptural piece inspired by archaeology and natural material erosion — it’s meant to be a commentary on how quickly technology becomes obsolete. The Rimowa x Daniel Arsham Eroded Attache is encased in a metallic briefcase and comes with art handling gloves, a further means to preserve its status as a cultural artifact. The piece is currently being auctioned (along with a signed drawing of the artwork and a personal letter from Arsham) online at Sotheby’s ahead of a wide release on May 17th.

Daniel Arsham Proves That Candles Are a Good Gift

After years of controversy, renowned artist and architect Daniel Arsham is making the case for candles as a good gift.

Arsham’s latest project, the Arsham Studio x Joya “Exoplanet,” is a new candle set that lets you experience the solar phenomenon. Exoplanets are planets and moons that orbit outside of the sun’s solar system, so naturally little is known about them. However, Arsham spent some time at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) of NASA, which focuses largely on the study of exoplanets for thorough research before approaching the design. As a result, the combination of his knowledge and fascination with the subject matter and the distinct design sensibility of Joya (acclaimed design studio and fragrance brand founded in 2006 by Frederick Bouchardy), the collaboration produced an exoplanet-inspired candle set that is truly out of this world.

Along with the candle itself comes the ritual of its assembly. Each set comes with the slip cast porcelain “Exoplanet” in 2 parts, 350g of scented, soy wax beads in an aluminum canister, two cotton wicks, and a pair of gloves. The scent was produced exclusively for this collaboration, consisting of fig leaf, coconut milk, cut grass, cyclamen, jasmine, hyacinth Cedarwood Texas, violet, rosewater, amber, incense, tonka and vanilla beans. Whoever said that candles were a poor gift clearly never had the opportunity to make their own space-inspired porcelain set, but rest assured those days are gone.

The Arsham Studio x Joya “Exoplanet” candle is available online now.

Daniel Arsham Opens New Exhibit in NYC

Daniel Arsham, a veteran resident at the Perrotin Gallery with his fifteenth exhibit, is showing his second solo exhibit in the city, 3018. The exhibition features new pieces devoid of color and instead focusing on elements, architecture, and material, in a resulting collection which took Arsham over two years to make.

“A lot of the work is a continuation of the objects and work I’ve been making for the last 10 years or so that imagine objects from our everyday experience with the perspective of time,” says Arsham. “There is a sense that they are either moving forward or that these objects have been brought back.” The humble man, in a white A.P.C. coat smudged with green paint, researched extensively, focusing on particular objects which he calls ‘icons.’ The telephone, for example, had to be a specific Westinghouse phone.

Arsham really explores the essential composition of these objects. “I try to pretend as if I don’t know what the objects are and what they are for,” says Arsham. On the first floor of the gallery, the so-called garage space, two cars occupy the same– a 1981 DeLorean and a 1961 Ferrari 250GT California. Both cars were produced in limited quantity (only 50 of the Ferrari), so Arsham followed through to understand the charm behind them. The actual DeLorean is encased within the piece of art. There are also seeming ruins of the original cars stuffed with quartz crystals.

“We look at the works as if they are in a state of decay — degrading or falling apart. But we also associate crystal with a process of growth. So there’s an ambiguity as to whether the objects are disintegrating or whether they are growing to some kind of completion, and that sort of in-between state,” says the artist. Another installation on the same floor follows the same theme, and includes mythical cast book covers that Arsham made up entirely for himself.

On the third floor, Arsham explores the same theme even further, with a draped wall tag at the entrance reading “FUTURE”. The back-wall is focused on erosion as an idea. The patches from his old backpack take on the theme of materialism and the tie up creatures a theme of something subtly recognizable, yet dark at the same time.

As a manipulator of architectural structures, Arsham reworks them in a way that is not entirely destructive or building, but rather intentional physical movement. “Somewhat recognizable. They’re subtle but kind of dark at the same time.”
