Some Must-See Locations in Hudson Yards

Today marks the historical opening of Hudson Yards, essentially changing New York’s West Side to a culinary and shopping destination in a deconstructed traditional mall. With the Vessel marking a new outdoor landmark, restaurants like Michelin-starred chef Thomas Keller’s newest addition and luxury shops are all within the comfort of an aesthetic feast. We round up a few highlights from the new shopping destination.

LOUIS VUITTON

The fifth floor marks the spot. In between all the chaos, Louis Vuitton glows on one of the top floors of the building with a full view of the atrium and the Vessel across the square. The store will feature all the brand’s newest exclusive capsules, making it a new destination for everyone looking to get off Fifth Avenue.

TAK Room

With more than 100 stores and restaurants within the span of 40 blocks, you only need to know one fine dining destination — TAK Room is Thomas Keller’s new kitchen ready to elevate Hudson Yard’s high dining experience to a new level (spanning floors 5-6.)

COACH

On the first floor, Coach‘s newest store is just blocks away from their HQ, ensuring that everything is up to its highest standards. The store also houses the designer’s first New York accessories shop, with a collection of scarves, sunglasses, jewelry, watches, bag charms, and small leather goods.

NEIMAN MARCUS

Perhaps the biggest opening of the evening was Neiman Marcus‘ newest flagship, spanning floors 5-7. Occupying the largest space in the mall, the luxury department store offers an immersive shopping experience. At the vast new outpost, customers will find everything from Louboutin to Valentino. There to celebrate the opening was Liza Minelli, who christened the store with a soaring rendition of ‘New York, New York.’

CARTIER

Cartier

Cartier was buzzing at the VIP launch serving black caviar amuse bouches in traditional uniform on the first floor. As one of the leading houses of luxury, you are sure to secure exclusive pieces of fine jewelry, timepieces, and prestigious accessories.

DUNHILL

The British luxury goods brand has opened a 2,600-square-foot US flagship at the mall. The posh new outpost, which was inspired by the designer’s other stores in Paris and London, houses the label’s sophisticated men’s pieces and accessories.

Simon Doonan Helps Launch Lincoln’s 80th Anniversary Continental

Ahead of its 80th anniversary, all-American carmaker Lincoln is re-releasing its seminal Continental model — famed for its center-opening doors — for the new millennium. Originally introduced in the ’60s, the car model designated a new era of luxury car design, which was heightened by an extensive series of ads. This vast archive of vintage material served as inspiration for Simon Doonan, creative ambassador for Barney’s and general tastemaker, who was asked to design an installation to coincide with the launch.

“[The Continental] is a huge part of the Lincoln heritage,” he tells me at the 1 Hotel Brooklyn Bridge. “First done in the ’60s — a car is a car is a car, there are not many brilliant innovative things you can do with it, that is that noticeable. So having two doors open like that, it’s an effortless luxury, incredible design. It’s brilliant.”

The installation featured a simple yet striking dramatic canvas backdrop, to enhance the car’s modern look. “I think Lincoln does a brilliant job of excavating specific moments from the past, but putting them in a totally modern context. I had the privilege of going into the archive and looking at all of these wonderful vintage ads but the brand is not consumed by its vintage past. It’s just a really great data point — little sprinkles of inspiration that bring it right up to date,” Doonan tells me, regarding the car’s standing relevance today.

While many designers across all industries are dipping into their pasts to capitalize on the growing demand for nostalgia, Doonan acknowledges that one must always consider where things fit today. “If you design a car, and it becomes a sensation and people love it, it means you resonated with something in the zeitgeist,” he tells me. “You can’t sit in a bubble designing beautiful things if people aren’t seeing them. It’s not art — it’s design.”

He also shares that it’s the public reaction that ultimately decides on a design’s place in history. “I think the public is always the ultimate judge. It can a great design, but if the public seizes upon it, it’s a really great design. I do feel like the public votes on successful design.” He also adds that Lincoln, who in the past has worked with major brands like Cartier, Emilio Pucci, Givenchy, and Bill Blass, “has always been involved with the culture.” It’s this consistency and desire to follow and explore areas of contemporary design beyond the automotive industry that sets it apart from its peers.

The Lincoln Continental 80th Anniversary Coach Door Edition will be released next summer in a limited run of 80 models, each adorned with a unique badge. The announcement follows the reveal of the new 2020 Lincoln Aviator, a premium SUV with two engines and a sleek all-leather interior.

“Back in the day, it was all about style, less about practicality and function. Nowadays, we can offer both. You have style, but this car offers all the safety features and amenities that luxury customers are looking for. I’m very excited and there’s great momentum for Lincoln now,” says Kemal Curic, chief exterior designer for Lincoln. “When you open the doors, it’s like welcoming someone. There’s something very human and personal about this.”

“And also celebratory,” Doonan adds. “It’s a grand voila.”

Cartier Releases New Masculine Fragrance, L’Envol de Cartier

Cartier’s latest fragrance marks new territory for the French brand’s perfumery department in more ways than one. Both masculine and airy, L’Envol de Cartier joins existing scents as the first oriental in the Cartier family. Accented with patchouli, contrasting notes of Gaiac wood and nectar-like sweetness create a fully rounded, yet complex fragrance.

The eau de parfum’s bottle displays Cartier’s penchant for luxury and innovation: a glass outer shell houses the capsule-like inner tank, made removable for easy refills, and a guilloché-inlaid bottle stopper twists down, revealing the nozzle. The effect of the suspended inner chamber is magical, physicalizing the lightness of the scent in a display-worthy bottle not out of place amongst other Cartier glassworks.

L’Envol de Cartier is available online now.

Over 60 modern and vintage timepieces—from Rolex, Patek Philippe, Audemars Piguet, and Cartier—line Christie’s Time for Spring auction, offering a rare opportunity for collectors all over the world to get their hands on one-of-a-kind watches. Running through April 5, 2016, the event is led by the Patek Philippe reference 2503, a piece previously owned by Andy Warhol that shows off the artist’s intrigue for horology with its noticeable ‘bunny ear lugs,’ 18K yellow gold Markowsky case, black lizard strap, and manually wound Cal. 9-90. Beating at 19,800 vibrations per hour, the watch is finished with Côtes de Genève adorning the bridges and perlage covering some of the movement’s internal plates. In his time, Warhol’s appreciation for art translated into his enviable collection of over 300 watches, with favorites centered in the canopy that once hung over his bed. Commemorating the artist’s ardor, this circa 1952 Patek Philippe is expected today to reach 100K at the auction’s close.
