In His Own Words: Heron Preston Set to Tackle Sustainability through Uniform Collection

Artist and creative powerhouse Heron Preston partners with the New York City Department of Sanitation to bring “Uniform,” a new collection with its finger on the pulse of global sustainability. Created from recycled workwear, the line is an artistic interpretation of DSNY’s 0x30 initiative, a vow to send zero waste to landfills by the year 2030. Heron Preston muses this topic and his own creative ventures in his own words below.

Q: What were your first steps after realizing you wanted to apply design to social change?

Back in my world of art & fashion, I had always wanted to re-design uniforms. I loved workwear and was really into the idea of “designer” uniforms. I was swimming in the ocean last summer when a plastic bag brushed against my arm. At that moment I had an epiphany. I thought about how much I hated litter bugs. I thought about my dreams of re-designing uniforms and boom, I thought about the DSNY, a uniformed force that cared about the same things as me.
