General Idea Spring 2013: The Last Lumberjacks and Neon's Not Dead

There was a lot to love at the General Idea Spring 2013 show, which added a healthy touch of the forest to the brand’s signature quirky street stylings. Creative director Bumsuc Choi took inspiration from the Chinese documentary, The Last Lumberjacks by Yu Guangyi, which follows actual lumberjacks out in the Heilongjiang Province of China. As translated by the collection, we get a unique combination that refreshingly breathes new life into what might otherwise be some hackneyed street looks, like camo and neon. A slew of adorable shoes that could be accused of overdoing it on the neon instead, make the counter point that neon’s not dead. The camouflage print skews more organic than military, and all sorts of design elements, from color blocking and print blocking to mismatched layering are strong enough to be stand out pieces alone, but still offer up plenty of ways for the intrepid man of style to take them to the next level.
