Backstage: Richard Chai SS’14
Richard Chai’s Spring 2014 Collection is a study in bold contrasts. White and black are the colors that dominate, strongly accentuated by shocks of sky blue and fiery orange. The fits are loose, even flowing, and the models frequently forego pants in favor of comfortable shorts. Suiting is present, but again, Mr. Chai’s flowing fit predominates, lending the entire ensemble a swirling elegance. Also present, and more controlled, are a set of leather jackets, a collaboration between Richard Chai and Andrew Marc. Like the bold architecture of the city in summer, Richard Chai presents an image of a man that never hides. He knows who he is, knows how he fits into the world, and he is not shy about expressing himself. There is a comfort in his own skin that allows him to pass through a critical world unscathed.
