Supreme Opens First Store in Brooklyn

supreme---1

New York-based cult streetwear label Supreme opens its highly anticipated first store in Brooklyn today. The launch of the location in Williamsburg marks the brand’s second store in the city — the original flagship in Soho helped establish the neighborhood as a streetwear epicenter when it opened in 1994, and has since become a minor landmark among skaters and hypebeasts alike. The new 3000-square-foot shop boasts a large skate ramp in the store’s center, a feature also seen in the company’s Los Angeles store.

The store’s minimal interior echoes the design cues of its other outposts, including a wall dedicated to skate decks, while the exterior is decorated with custom graffiti by artist and skater Mark Gonzalez. Additionally, professional skateboarder Jefferson Pang will oversee the store as manager.

Supreme is now open at 152 Grand St, Brooklyn, NY 11249.

Raf Simons Reveals NY-Inspired Fall 17 Campaign

Raf Simons has revealed his latest campaign for his New York-influenced Fall 17 collection. Continuing the urban theme, which was inspired by the designer’s recent move to the city to assume creative direction over Calvin Klein, the image series focuses on the bold graphics and subversive slogans from the collection. The campaign features pieces from the line displayed against a graffitied brick backdrop, shot in a blunt and candid manner. The new images starkly contrast the intimate portrait series, inspired by the work of Robert Mapplethorpe, that made up the designer’s Spring/Summer campaign. Bringing the theme home, the designer also released an exclusive line of merchandise with Dover Street Market New York, available now.

Alexander Wang Steps Down as CEO of Eponymous Label

American fashion designer Alexander Wang is stepping down as CEO of his eponymous label. Wang held the position for a year, managing both the business and creative side of his empire, after a three-year stint as creative director for Balenciaga.

Wang will maintain his role as creative director, but has named Lisa Gersh, who has previously worked at lifestyle brands Goop and Martha Stewart Omnimedia, as the company’s new CEO. While the appointment seems unexpected, it could hint at a greater shift in the creative strategy of the brand to expand into more of a lifestyle presence.

Alexander Wang launched in 2007 after Wang dropped out from Parsons  School for Design. The minimal and effortless urban elegance of the line made it an instant hit, and quickly solidified Wang as one of New York’s finest design talent.

Gentle Monster Expands with New LA Outpost

Korean eyewear brand Gentle Monster is expanding its footprint in the US with an upcoming store in Los Angeles. While the brand made its stateside debut last year with a smaller footprint in New York, the new location in Downtown LA’s Art District is an expansive space that follows a traditional harvesting theme, showcasing the brand’s commitment to cutting edge technology, art, and emphasis on experiential store design.

Designed by Canadian-Italian film director Floria Sigismondi, who has directed music videos for Bjork, David Bowie, and Rihanna, the new store interior features several large-scale installations and kinetic sculptures throughout the space to emphasize the agricultural concept. Thousands of metallic rods by the store’s entrance represent rice, while another installation by Korean artist Jung Uk Yang is evocative of threshing, resulting in a highly-immersive autumnal shopping experience.

Gentle Monster will open October 5 at 816 S Broadway, Los Angeles, CA 90014.

Isabel Marant Reveals First Menswear Looks in Paris

isabel---1

Image: Ulrich Knoblauch.

While discussion of genderless clothing continues to permeate throughout the fashion landscape, French womenswear designer Isabel Marant sent her first men’s pieces down the runway during Paris Fashion Week. The decision came after strong demand for the label, know for its classic French sophistication, to branch out into menswear, and Marant appears to be starting small – out of the 46 looks in the SS18 collection, 8 were menswear. Each look for the show was cut using the same fabrics and pattern as the womenswear, with only slight adjustments to fit the male frame. The collection itself was a vibrant spectacle, featuring heavy knitwear and sportswear-influenced jackets and trousers.

Take a look at the Isabel Marant’s menswear debut below.

Following a highly successful collaboration in March, The Weeknd has dropped its second collection with international fashion retailer H&M. Continuing the brand’s ‘Spring Icon’ series, the latest 18-piece line contains many of the R&B star’s signature emblems, including X’s and O’s patches and prints, while pivoting in a more streetwear and sportswear oriented direction, evident with the increased selection of bomber jackets and hoodies. While the pastel overtones of the duo’s previous collection radiated West Coast chill, the darker hues of the fall collection establish an urban tone with seasonal balance.
