STYLE: Night Fall

Neil Barrett

Just as summer’s crystal blue skies darken into winter, fashion’s fall collections venture into inkier shades of navy. Use our guide below as an example to style your look with somber colors like charcoal and dove grey or spritelier shades of blue.

Porsche Design SS’14

Porsche Design’s Spring 2014 collection seems to have been dropped in from the future, at least the future we all remembered in the movies of our youth. The clothes are either sleek or flowing, producing a harmony of design that gives elegant lines free reign. Outerwear is heavily featured: there are long coats and tightly-zipped jackets, amplifying or sometimes just accentuating the wearer’s physique. The colors are a strong contrast between light and dark, with frequent use made of florescent, or reflective materials, shiny silver and white mixed with deep blue and black for a stirring, space-age effect. We are asked by Porsche Design to recapture the feeling of wonder that we felt when imagining the future, and to approach the new possibilities of the springtime with that same sense of wonder. We are asked, by Porsche Design, to dream again.

Shades of Grey by Micah Cohen SS’14

Shades of Grey by Micah Cohen is a study in contrasts for Spring 2014. Light plays out alongside dark, patterns share space with solids. The fit, overall, is loose and freeing, with extreme care taken to allow full movement and the passage of air over the body on hot days. Outerwear is a study in color blocking, lines of pattern or light creasing sharply onto dark backgrounds, or vice versa. There is traditional suiting, though it is rendered in brighter colors and never paired with a collared shirt or tie. Overall, the collection is one of unrestrained expression, of accepting the loosening of standards and constraints that comes with rising temperatures. Mr. Cohen invites us to relax our normal propriety and embrace the freedom of the Springtime.

DKNY’s Spring 2014 Collection is a harmony of simplicity and brilliance, a fusion of clean design with bright colors. Designer Donna Karan took her inspiration from life in New York City, and the incongruous harmony that can be found in the busy city life. Bright colors and shades dominate the collection, from the bursts of red in shorts and suit jackets to the pulse of yellow in a leather jacket. Yet there is sober suiting to be found as well, simple, clean creations in darker colors, because the DKNY man knows there is a time for work and a time for play. New York City provides a chance for both, and he takes full advantage of all opportunities.
